Help requested for a brainstorming exercise

Hi,

I'm not sure whether this is in the right forum, so mods please move it if necessary.

I'm doing some brainstorming for a story that I am writing, and would like to ask for some help with a particular idea I have.

I like the idea of having two of my characters (twin brother and sister) be able to communicate with each other (and only each other) telepathically. They can't read minds or anything like that, just "talk" to each other silently. It's not a terribly original concept, I know, but I do like it...

My question is, in what situations would this be helpful and/or an advantage? Be as broad as you like, perhaps coupled with "if this or that or the other", e.g. "if they were in the military, then..." They are 22, and distance isn't a factor in their communication with each other.

Currently, I have:

Holding a private conversation in the midst of other people
One is kidnapped, can tell the other where they are
Ultra-secure communication during a military mission

They could be casino cheats, securities traders on wall street who give each other insider information with out leaving a trace.


One of them could be on the run from the law, and the other one a police officer chasing them down.


The story could be about how they struggle to be individuals as they can hear each others thoughts and feelings. They could be normal or insane by this.

Spies for opposing organizations/nations.

Given that they are opposite sex and age 22, they would be able to give each other advice in matters of the heart. You know, double date, girls excusing to go to the powder room and sis filling bro in.

Another thought, again in the comedy realm would be if she were to have a high-power job but be completely unable to attend an important conference/meeting. So, brother dresses up as her and tries to pull off that he is she in front of company VIP's.

Sorry, just a personal comment.

I had an idea, and I'm no author. I started writing a script on my pc about a Christian who has a great life...a loving wife, family and kids and powerful faith. Everything in perspective, until he is urged to flippantly play the Lotto. As fiction would have it, he wins, and from that point everything spirals downward. Family and friends have expectations and resent it when they don't hand money out, they lose their priorities, yadda, yadda, yadda.

I got about 150 pages into my story, before I realized my story had nothing of substance. It was a private thing I kept even from my wife, who's a wonderful Christian. When I finally revealed what I had written, she was in agreement that, well...er...

So I'm sticking to my day job.

My point in sharing this, is some are writers and some are not. If you have that gift, use it! There are plenty of readers out there waiting for new things to read, including me!

that isnt call telepathy but something else, empathy. lol i used to believe in that.

hmm nah cant do that one, relationship as in how they communicate emotions, but keep that clean. then you have the telepathic attacks as in some attempting jam communications(archnemesis).
