Hey, wussup .. I'm Lloyd

Thought I'd post a message in here as I'm fairly new ... I've been browsing the boards for a few weeks now.

Anyway ..

I'm Lloyd, I'm 28 .. a fellow believer in Christ. I'm from Wales in the UK. I'm a keen sportsman, I've played football (soccer) at semi-professional level and I used to be an Amatuer boxer.

I'm here to learn, to understand more, to help, to offer advice, to do the will of the Father. I ask God that anything I post will always be of truth, and will help, not be a hinderance to others.

All glory to God, and his Son, Jesus Christ.

It's about time you introduced yourself, Lloyd! :)

Thanks for clarifying that your were talking about that silly little "sport" you have where you kick a ball around and not American style FOOTBALL. Let us not confuse an intense sports experience with (yawn) 4 shots on goal in 90 minutes of play (yawn). Just kiddin'...sort of ;)

Haha .. Mike, let's not start the football debate!! LOL

I actually tried watching the SuperBowl a few months back and fell asleep from the stop-start-stop-start approach!! (plus the adverts/commercials were a nightmare!)

My sentiments exactly! American sports....hahahaha, more like Advertisements with a bit of running now and then and an overkill of statistical data :shades

GASP!, COUGH!, DRY HEAVE!...Huh? Okay mods, I know we're supposed to keep this to greetings, but this is fun! Come on Lloyd! Every time I've tuned into soccer, no one is ever near the goal! At least in hockey you have 20, 30 shots on goal, and that's for one team. You could go forever and no one comes near a goal. That is the cure for insomnia. And then there's the whole time keeping thing! The clock runs out and no one knows how much time is left until the ref blows his whistle.

American football? Hits that rattle the fillings, goal line stands, knocking a QB on his back end, one handed catches in the corner of the end zone!! You can't deny that!

Oh, Caroline!!! Why couldn't you just let me go on thinking you were perfect? Somehow, I have to reconcile this comment of yours. :crying

Mike,

I think football (real football ;)) is of such a poor standard in the US, you don't get to see the beauty of it :)

You should watch the Premier League - the skill level and commitment is outstanding. I coach also so it's a big passion of mine. It's a pretty technical sport once you get into it. Its the main sport here in the UK, so I guess I've grown up with it.

Ammmmmmmerican football on the other hand... haha. No, I havent studied it enough, or taken part in it so hard for me to comment. I know it's huge in the US though, even college football. I'm not too sure about the lycra pants and 300lbs of shoulder padding though ;)

I prefer the American football films -- the Blindside was good, saw that the other day and Any Given Sunday. Thats about as close as I get to watching a strange shaped ball getting buried beneath 400 blokes with silly hats on, haha :)

You crack me up, Lloyd :lol

Obviously, there is something great about soccer that I can't possibly connect to. I live near Detroit, Michigan and even went to the World Cup when it came to our area 15 years ago or so - because I was given free tickets. Didn't get it, even at that level. :shrug

The thing is, there's hardly any meaningful shots on goal! Structurally, it's similar to hockey, but in hockey you have shots on goal all the time. Especially in the play-offs, you're cringing every other minute, because anything can happen. Sometimes, it makes your stomach come up through your throat! People have been saying that soccer will catch on here in the U.S. for a long time, because there are so many youth leagues, but it never has. Once the athletes in soccer develop their athletic skills, they almost invariably move on to another sport. And then that rock star left his European team to go to Los Angeles. That was supposed to launch soccer too. Nope!

I have season tickets to the Detroit Lions :shame , but I'm much more of a college football fan. The hitting and speed of the game is fantastic! The pause between plays adds to the tension before the play happens. I've heard they might try having the Super Bowl in Europe. Please, NO!!!

USA'94 wasn't the best World Cup in fairness - try and watch this years, it'll be a great event - hugely televised and some top class players on show. Lionel Messi, Christiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Didier Drogba, Fernando Torres - look out for some of them players. Even the US has a good team these days! :)

I used to like the Chicago Bears as a kid (I had the stickers of the helmets!! lol) and remember "The Fridge" or something. I know a few of the players, mainly the superstars of the sport. I'm sure I would like it if I stayed in the US, as I love most sports. I'm a huge boxing fan, not sure if you watch boxing? They tried some American Football at Wembley Stadium if I remember correctly, not sure it went down too well though.

Thats the thing, in soccer, you dont want 6, 7 goals a game. Its good to have high scoring matches but it's tactical, and at the top level, there is little between the teams so taking opportunities is vital.

I remember Beckham being booed when he returned to LA Galaxy, haha. Landan Donovan is now over here, he's a top player in fairness. I support Liverpool and a certain Tom Hicks has ruined our club!! :sad

Lloyd, I don't need high scoring, but I do need the threat of scoring. A 1-0 game can be great if there are terrific saves and scoring opportunities. It seems (from a non-fan POV) that the field is too big. Too many things have to happen for a player to have the ball in front of the goal. Seeing the ball kicked around for the most part, in mid-field isn't very compelling, IMO.

The NFL started at Wembley last year I believe. The efforts of the NFL to make it a global sport and force the issue aren't working, evidenced by the European NFL. There's also the travel across the Atlantic that presents an insurmountable problem. This has become our national pastime because it started at the grass roots and became a part of our culture. Colleges (University of Michigan among the first :thumb ) played football exclusively, and pro football was considered dishonorable with a bunch of sell-outs for a long time. Now the NFL is king, although I prefer college football.

Scoring opportunities. That's all I'd need out of soccer to have any possibility of sustained interest.
