My son had his ceremony last night.

Interesting is the kindest word I can use for it.

The band played well.

Yeah....and the guest speaker gave a great speech.

That's about it.

Let me guess, the hooping and holloring at the mention of every name left our generation disgusted at the lack of respect and honor for the moment at hand.

Let me guess, the hooping and holloring at the mention of every name left our generation disgusted at the lack of respect and honor for the moment at hand.

That was expected...

But I didn't expect the Valedictorian and Salutatorian to have "written" their speeches at the last minute and be nothing more than bits and lines from ones published on the internet and then read in such a monotone fashion.

The choir obviously didn't practice. The solo and duets missed timing and notes...(where is Simon Cowl when you need him?)

Almost every kid felt the need to dance as his name was called.

The guest speaker had a great speech...but the lady introducing him read his introduction (in monotone fashion) and it was a laundry list lasting as long as his speech instead of a clear, inflected summation of accomplishments.

The Principle of the school seemed angry and read his speeches without anything he said either kind or serious ever reaching an expression on his face except anger or indignation... Unsure...he also was reading his speeches as if it was his first time with the material.

It was the wholehearted avoidance of any effort put into the commencement ceremony that was shocking.

The kids had sashes/stole that were covered with so many badges and cords and braids it was kinda weird... They looked almost like a general in his dress uniform....really unlike when I went. There were a few without a stole at all... I wonder if they just forgot them.

That sure wasn't the way my graduation went. But then the valedictorian speech was made by none other than Weird Al Yankovic and we graduated in the year of the American Bi-centennial, so there was a ton of patriotism along with a professional quality fireworks show that rivaled any put on by a city on July 4th!

Oh, and we had a streaker. Yep, what better way to celebrate 200 years of freedom than to have a streaker at the graduation?

We couldn't bring any gun over .38 caliber, or knives over 6" into the ceremony.

Yes,
It is an International Baccalaureate (IB) school though. So it's an elective honors program school.

Most of those there are there by choice. A few are from the neighborhood... But not many.

Our's was pretty lame.
We couldn't bring any gun over .38 caliber, or knives over 6" into the ceremony.

They never said a word about this at mine. Since it was in a neighborhood that by this time was being infiltrated by the Compton Crips I know there had to be tons of guns and knives of all calibers and sizes in attendance!
