Holy Communion stuff

Even when the number of people involved is small I have noticed Communion served out of tiny cups. It makes me giggle. Is it scriptural, sort of...that people take few drops of wine served from such small cups and at the same time take a grain of bread?

I know and believe the Lord's Supper (passover meal) taken that day was as sufficient as a normal meal. So why do we take drops and grain today?

Symbology. Not all faiths/churches have such small portions though. I think most churches have at least a whole swallow and a quarter size morsel to represent Christ. I have been in various churches that don't do this memorial service often, and instead have maybe twice a year, a meal in their fellowship hall...but still there is always the small cup of wine and unleavened bread.

I am assuming you know the whole of the representative act?

Actually Gazelle, your correct.

Take the Orthodox for example. They only do unleavened once a year (passover week) and you get a whole square, kinda like a big piece of corn bread you'd expect to get with your meal in Texas. Unfortunately, if you drop a piece of the body of Christ, the priest has to lick it up, and if the blood of Christ spills on the carpet, they have to cut that square out and burn it in a holy place...

After Communion Sunday and the folks were outside talking and what ever my brother and i would dash back in to the church and see which one could drink up the most grape juice left in the little cups!

That's why I wish we used the really old grape juice :D

I do not think that the "Lord's Supper" is necessarily synonymous with the Passover meal. They shared the Passover meal but it was the breaking of the bread and the sharing of the wine that was what we are to do in remembrance. It was only from that point that the bread and wine became symbolic of his body and blood.

You are correct. And I'd add that it was after a passover preperation meal, not the actual passover (That's the day Christ died), but I didn't want to muddle the waters.

still Scripture is clear that it was not part of the meal in itself. No, it was something NEW.

Luke 22:19-20 And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and gave to them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. And the cup in like manner after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood, even that which is poured out for you.

Good thinking!
I Would wait behind next time.

Yes, right. :thumbsup I thought it went down like that but I hadn't looked up the reference and was going by memory, so I thought it best to not say too much, just in case. :study

Thanks Free:D
But why is it generally small (I am not a glutton)?

I think it is likely done that way to avoid this:

1 Cor 11:20-21,27-34, 20 When you come together, it is not the Lord's supper that you eat. 21 For in eating, each one goes ahead with his own meal. One goes hungry, another gets drunk.

27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. 30 That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died. 31 But if we judged ourselves truly, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined so that we may not be condemned along with the world. 33 So then, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for one another-- 34 if anyone is hungry, let him eat at home--so that when you come together it will not be for judgment. About the other things I will give directions when I come. (ESV)

Can't say that have, though I've been through a few vineyards prior to harvest. anway, we got about 7 or 8 quarts of concentrated grape juice off our vine this year. Should be really good next spring :D
