I was just wondering because I've known a few people on Roleplay.me whose had this happen to them. How do people get their personal information to be able to log in as them?

Simply put, hackers can find out your personal info by simply asking. They may pretend to be a friend or look at social media accounts to find important info they can use like first and last name, birthday, email, phone number, etc. Some can find out answers to your secret questions this way, too. Enough cyber stalking can reveal plenty. Some websites have a poorly built "forgot password" stuff so they can log in and then change all the info.

I remember online on some websites where there were plenty of kids after a while like Neopets. Some hackers would simply ask, "If you tell me your password, I will give you a million neopoints/a Paintbrush/babysit your account while you are away/get you a high score trophy." Pretty mean stuff.

The best thing you can do is create a strong paasword. You can make your secret questions unrelated answers. Example: What is your favorite color? Answer: Grapes. I find this keeps people from getting an accurate answer, but remember your answers/write them down somewhere secret! Set up 2 step verification of possible so it texts your phone or sends you an email with a code to log in. This makes their job a lot harder.

Also double check the link of the webpage before you login. Sometimes there are fake login pages that give the hacker usernames and passwords. These will often be misspelled.

In addition to what Luminous_Rose mentioned, there are hackers that will just build scripts that will scrape a website for hours, and days, and figure out peoples passwords. That is the more complicated path, but there are simpler versions, where disgruntled employees of a particular company will steal a list of information and sell it to the highest bidder.

All of this is completely awful by the way. :(

This is the world we live in. The only way to be safe online is to not be online.

And umm yeah that certainly isn't going to happen. Lol! You're not a hundred percent safe being out in the world or behind your own walls either so there's really no reason to get paranoid about it.

There are millions of desperate and poor third world hackers that will sit at a computer all day for a few dollars per hour, and try to find ways to hack stuff. The good guys are outnumbered many to one, and small businesses in particular may not even be able to afford much of a tech staff to protect their data bases.

I still miss it. It turned into a kid website and they sold out to Viacom. Went downhill from there.

Really?? Do you mean that it's no longer functioning??

Really sad too. :sad

No, the website is still there, you can look for yourself. It used to be managed by a small group of people called TNT (The Neopets Team). They created the website originally for bored college students. I suppose they couldn't do the website anymore so they sold it to Viacom (these people own other companies like Nickelodeon, MTV, Paramount Pictures, etc). Next thing you know Neopets is swarming with kids, commercials on Nickelodeon, and a lot more merchandise. When they took over they did not allow anyone to talk about God or spiritual matters. I would get warnings for things that were not even listed in the forum rules and tried to message them about adding it to their rules page, but they did no such things. They were reporting me for petty things in PRIVATE guilds. Seriously, I think they wanted to get rid of me. They eventually froze my accounts. Makes me sad how fun it was and now all my stuff is gone. Speaking of this topic, they had a major breach years back that got usernames, passwords, birthdays, and stuff like that.

I haven't got their yet ,but there's is much to be said about being free of the internet .social media isn't all that .

When I was reading the reviews of security cameras on Amazon, there were a lot of people who complained that their cameras had been hacked. One person used the camera to monitor their baby, and said a hacker prankster was yelling at their baby through the camera's speaker. Another woman said she was walking through her house and a hacker started talking to her through the camera's speaker, making remarks about her appearance.

Its possible to set these systems up securely, but you really have to know what you are doing. Otherwise, you are just giving hackers pictures of your house. Many of these cameras have to be hooked up to the Internet by design, potentially giving millions of hackers around the world a chance to hack them.
