How long is forever?

I was thinking: what would this world look like in the absense of time! Scary. Now science is all about time: robotics, rates of chemical reaction - everything. God being omnipotent (and the Father of Science...I would say) created everything. I wonder how

I would assume that we, as humans, wouldn't know the difference. Just like if we were in the absence of time, wondering how it would be to bear the presence of it. However; I think the laws of physics would be changed quite a bit as well. A scary thought indeed!

I also don't believe God would have been able to create free-will human beings without time. Or would he? If you think of it, Gods plan is all based on time. How would he plan it if there was no time? Maybe take the angels for example. He created all of the angels at once, in a time-less environment. To create free-will individuals, he gave them a choice, in which some rebelled. However; humans have slowly populated the earth, and earned free-will by knowing both good and evil. Making a decision over time to go to the lord. Maybe that's why we are held above the angels in heaven? Regardless, time exists, and it has an extremely important role. If it didn't, God wouldn't have created it for us.

I am not sure I am smart enough to completely grasp the concept of a time-less environment, though. lol

POST EDITED TO: Eternity: the unending continuation of a time-less environment.

Maybe eternity is the continuation of a time-less world, but furthermore, the inability of us to RECOGNIZE the fact that time isn't even involved. In basic terms...When we get to heaven, we may understand we are in a place without time, but it is irrelevant. Time won't be relative. 60 hypothetical seconds could feel like 60 years, or vise versa. Regardless, we won't even care. We may not even ponder it, and I bet we won't even COUNT it. Gosh that would get old and dreadful.

I find a lot of wisdom in this post. But I think we WILL recognize the fact that time is not involved, and I think we will enjoy that !

But I don't know any of this for sure.

God stands outside of time. Time is a creation of the human state in an attempt to place priorities in our existence. It has really nothing to do with "longevity" living with God.

"When we've been here ten thousand years,
bright shining as the sun.
We've no less days to sing God's praise,
then when we've first begun.

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me,
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now, I see."

PS: Rachel:

Did you know that this hymn reached the top of the charts once?

It was about 40 years ago. In about 1971. (I actually remember it happening... :chin )

Blessings.

Eternity is not scary when you are trusting in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.

People don't "make" Heaven. You either repent and put your trust in Jesus Christ or you choose to remain dead in your sins against God. No amount of works will earn you Heaven.

Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, (9) not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

"From eternity to eternity I am God..."- Isaiah 43:13

Eternity is not timeless, there was a beginning and there will be an end.

Do you think it would be fair to say that Forever refers to an unending continuation of time? Or should we treat both(eternity) as one in the same?

It is impossible for forever/eternity to be an unending continuation of time because that would mean
1sec+1sec is the same amount of time as
1sec-1sec which is impossible

I think it's clear from the Bible that eternity is not subject to time, and that the eternal Creator is not subject to the constraints of His Creation. Our own minds are so finite and limited in our capacity to take in what eternity is.

I agree with you, since God created time he is not constrained by it.

However in our physical dimension or realm eternity as a endless continuation of time is impossible, not saying that I'm 100% sure, but I have never heard a good argument how +1 infinity and -1 infinity can be the same value.

M: Well, you know more about math than I do, evidently. God is the Lord of time and math, anyway.

Alright. People who would miss Heaven are forever separated from God...or would forever not enter Heaven. The people who would make Heaven would also forever remain with God (unless something happens....dunno).
Forever means through all the ages. For example, we are currenly in the Church age. They say this will last for two days or two thousand years. Then we will have the 1,000 year reign of Christ. At this point there will be a resurrection of the unjust, unsaved and unregenerate. They will be thrown into the Lake of Fire and that is the second death. Then we are told there will be a new heaven and a new earth.

Science tells us that the universe is around 14 billion years old. The earth is around 5 billion years. The earth could perhaps go on for another 5 billion years. In America when things were designed to last forever that means 100 years. A house or car can actually last longer, but you have to take care of them and perhaps rebuild them. In Europe things have lasted for thousands of years but were designed to last for maybe 500 years. Underground things tend to grow. When exposed to the elements then they deteriorate or break down.
