How Should You Dress for Worship Services?

This topic has been discussed countless times, but I was in my morning devotionals, and the topic was brought up. Something was said that caused me to realize how differently I answer this question today than I did for decades until only a few years ago.

The reasoning I gave when the question was asked was a rhetorical question back. How would you dress if you were invited to meet the President? Doesn't your God deserve at least that much honor? I've come to the point where I wear jeans or shorts and a comfortable shirt. When I pose my rhetorical question to myself today, I believe I have a good response.

Mike, don't confuse worldy customs and norms with God's desire. The world invented the neck tie. The world says what appropriate dress is in any given situation. God wants your heart in the pews; not a suit and tie. Cloak yourself in humbleness and bring a heart of gratefulness.

Romans 12:2 "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God."

This isn't to say people shouldn't dress up if that is how they are Led or if it helps them get in a spiritual place to meet the Lord, but it should never be a requirement (stated or implied) of the church they attend.

So two questions:
1. How do you dress for worship?
2. How do you believe you should dress for worship?

Im not saying it's a sin to dress up,but wearing suits and dresses is a bit much imho.
 
T-shirt, shorts, tennis shoes, sometimes a suit .. But it's been on my mind to get a biblical type simple robe just for convenience and not having to pick out something .. And with sandals or flip flops weather permitting .. I have actually dressed down on purpose so if a visitor came in they could look around and say to themselves ''well at least I'm dressed better than that guy''
 
Much depends on our age and where we live.
Suits and tie and dressing up for women used to be the norm.
Today, I'd say it's a bit much, as Jason said. I have noticed that in
Baptist churches they tend to get more dressed up.

I'm going to have to disagree with some and say that, yes, we should dress for church as if we were going to meet Jesus.

I used to teach kids and I'd notice that many pre-teens and teens would go to receive communion (in a Catholic church) dressed in jeans and a top. Which wouldn't be so bad, but the tops had figures and writing on them. Some were pretty ugly. When I had my communion class I told my kids to dress casually but with the consideration to give respect to God. No Batman, hard rock, weird sayings, etc.

I do think some kind of limit has to be set.

anyone who answers this two questions are putting their self up to be accused of legalism.
 
If we ' dress up ' for church... are we doing so to impress the other people? we aint gonna impress Him.
I am a jeans and a T shirt,,, When i do dress up it is to make others comfortable...like a wedding
My sister dresses up for most every thing...color coordinated earrings and shoes...
I would dress to fit in which church i was attending...

Mrs. Price attended the local AofG She was always dressed up... looked very nice... :) they had not missed a service in years ... if out of town they went to church where they were... The timing of this story is late 60s hippies every where... Mrs Price would have a fit among the other ladies after church if 'hippies' showed. up..... Mr.& Mrs. went on a camping vacation they had planned to be gone mid week... God teaches all the time... They had car problems small town in the middle of no where... small town garage now it is Sunday and all she had was dirty camping clothes ..... small town church..... she had the personal battle ... God won

She relayed this story as a testimony ... from then on she embraced those hippies... as they were embraced by the small town church people

I disagree as well. I can't say someone wouldn't respond that way if someone's response to either question was yes, but we take that chance whenever we have the audacity to state our opinion on faith matters. Some say it's a forced "work" to say you must believe to be saved.

If we're dressing up, it must mean that everyone else is too. So I've always felt I was just doing what the majority was doing. I never do anything to impress other people. In fact, I tend to dress down when everyone else if very elegant.

Allen Wynne wears shorts to church. That's unheard of here. I guess it also depends on whether a person feels they should "fit in" or not. I tend to want to.

I also know a girl who is a believer and wears moderate clothes to church, and then goes home and puts her mini skirt on. She's about 35. Is this right???

Oh. And some churches here (all Catholic) won't even let you in if your legs are showing or the arms are too uncovered.

And regarding Mr. and Mrs. Camper...never judge a book by its cover even though we do get these "first impressions". Fight them!

I know that for some it is.
Nazareth church is Boston back in the 80's kept jackets and clip on ties on a back rack of the church.
If you walked in without a jacket or tie, they gave you one to wear

Perhaps my wording wasn't great. I just meant discussions having anything to do with Christian living, faith, theology, whatever. To Allen's point, sadly, some may determine the state of someone's heart based on what they wear to worship.
 
I think it should be considered as if one were about to visit a dear friends family for a nice family dinner. Respectful attire is always good. However, if someone is poor and have nothing but meager rages to don then let that be so. Because our blessed Father knows the soul and the heart within. And does not judge the attire that wraps the body of one sincere of heart in service or seeking of Him.
 
I would add to my first post that I usually dress up when ever visiting a new church just in case that's what they all do, especially at a Sunday service ..

Well, I wanted your own thoughts on what you wrote. I don't find fault in your view. It just sounded like there were two views expressed. I certain respect that someone feels people should dress up. I don't agree, but I appreciate your position.

I hope you didn't feel like I was being critical of you. :)
