Romans 13:1
NLT
Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God.

What a security blanket! I love the fact that this verse is given to us. Knowing that God’s eye is on the nations is something I am comforted by.

When I see a police officer, I am reminded that God places him in his authority for me and my safety and my good.

Whenever I hear talk that is derogatory about police or government, including heads of state, I often think of the person speaking as having problems with authority. Let’s not indulge likewise.

Read further:
“So anyone who rebels against authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and they will be punished. For the authorities do not strike fear in people who are doing right, but in those who are doing wrong. Would you like to live without fear of the authorities? Do what is right, and they will honor you. The authorities are God’s servants, sent for your good. But if you are doing wrong, of course you should be afraid, for they have the power to punish you. They are God’s servants, sent for the very purpose of punishing those who do what is wrong. So you must submit to them, not only to avoid punishment, but also to keep a clear conscience.”

Being a good citizen involves being submissive to the laws of the land, and this is also the mark of the good citizen of Heaven! Submission to government allays fear in the believer, who seeks to do what is right, while it generally stirs up fear in those who lack respect for God, who often seek to get away with lawlessness. Speaking ill of our leaders is also an insult to God, and injurious to our own walk with God. It hurts His heart for us to tear down.

God has taken care of every detail of our lives, and we in well-governed countries find our ways prosperous because of the faith of our founding fathers. God honours the pledges of these people from long ago, who toiled to form nations who would honour God and bring prosperity to their people and the land. Many people in this world live in nations that have no Godly beginnings and their governments are corrupt. We need to be praying for the citizens of such countries and out of our riches, we need to be giving offerings of relief.

Praise God Almighty for his precious favour! We mustn’t take it for granted!

Hug a cop today! LOL!

I thought Canada was defended by Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and gangs of natives brandishing Lacrosse sticks. :rolling

(Why did I put that rolling smiley there, when I'm very serious? ;)) what's with the wink?

But, getting on topic, some people in authority earn my respect; other earn by submission to them. This includes some of these authorities:

(some) Police, military, teachers, firemen, attorneys, doctors, etc.

What these people do is of great value in a secular worldly way. I've always thought this of teachers, and it applies to all of these. The good ones are underpaid, but the bad ones are way overpaid.

Romans 13 only says we much submit to authorities. Nothing else. We don't have to love them, adore them, make them cookies. Yes, they are our neighbors, so we must love them for that alone, but I'm speaking to them in the capacities of their offices. Some don't deserve respect.

Romans 13
"6 This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. 7 Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor."

So, if these people abuse their power either by overusing it or not performing their duties, I will submit to them, and that's about all.

leave the rcmp alone mike.:lol

thanks i'm on that list as well i am military police.i do respect the officers but that doesnt mean i wont poke as in teasing the ones i know at church.

We don't live in a 2,000yr. old caste system as in the Bible. With the master/slave mentality either. Some would have died for their faith due to the ruling authorities- but that was then- in a caste system of inequality. The Christians would prevail against the heathen govt. eventually back then & no more being put to death bc of religion.

Today there are to many corrupt entities to safely say they work for the good of the state & to promote laws, etc. when half are as crooked as a lightning rod.

Half the "cops" are ok. And half need to be fired. In my town there are too many of them being public sector workers & unionized members & benefits like cash cows on the taxpayers! They, like the other public sector workers, have gotten far too much compensation from taxpayers.

This may be the Republicans strong point in 2012 (although I am an independent)
The public sector workers need to have their benefits & wages stripped down to what the private sector is compensated. And that is a lot of money that they are currently taking away from the "Dept. of Transportation" or DOT. My husband has no road construction work bc they are last on the line after police & firemaen & teachers gobble up all the tax money that only subsidized DOT- Not full pay to those with benefits & raises & retirement cash cows. If they retire on disability even- then they can even not pay income tax on that "entitlement."

I say let them find work in the private sector & see if they are productive or not. I don't think so- that's why the public sector workers depend on tax money from citizens in the 1st place. I refuse to pay for their retirement benefits & raises. I am moving as soon as we can afford to.
The private sector lost millions of jobs & are suffering in this great recession for 3 yrs. almost now- but the public sector workers only got raises. They weren't affected at all, while the private sector workers (many white collar jobs too from the greedy at the top capitalism failure) lost their jobs & homes.

This town has so many gustapos in it, one motorcycle cop gave me a speeding ticket in a 45mph zone when I was doing 42 & had the nerve to tell me- "oh, you can fight it in court- my word against yours, but the court costs will be $500+ if you lose!

I can't say all of them are bad though. One "let me go" the other day I think as I turned on the arrow far into the red light.

Please, people---don't miss the point of the devotional, which is to appreciate the fact that God has provided certain authorities over us for our safety and well-being, and when we conform to Him, we will conform to them.

Alabaster, thanks for this devotional...people do well to remember what those in positions like police and military do for us...and the blessing they are.

Jason, you are so right that many people don't know what the military and cops do on a daily basis, what they go through...

Many may have heard the case of Joseph Duncan...he murdered a family up in N. Idaho and kidnapped the youngest son and daughter. He tortured the boy to death, forcing the girl to watch and tortured and raped the girl as well. She was spotted by someone in a store and was rescued and Duncan arrested.

They had his trial in Boise and my nephew, who is an Ada County Sheriff's deputy was one of the officers detailed to take him to and from court during the trial.

My nephew said that this man was so demonic and every time they had to transport them, he would go into graphic detail of just what he did to the older members of the family, and go over and over what he did, in graphic detail to that little boy...

Jared has a daughter and a son and as a father, he truly wanted to hurt Duncan...at times he even wanted to just take his weapon and kill him on the spot. At the very least, it would have been good just to put a gag in his mouth so that they wouldn't have to listen to the terrible, horrible things he was saying.

But, of course, Jared couldn't do any of that, so he was subjected to hearing sheer evil for the matter of a few months. Since Jared is a Christian, he prayed and had all of us praying for him and the others on the detail that God would protect their hearts and minds from it all. I really didn't know until well after the trial what all Jared and the others were going through...as they weren't allowed to talk about it. I just knew that he asked all of us to pray for them..

I just share this to give a tiny little insight to what officers go through that we, as the public, really don't think about. Jared's brother, my nephew Justin, is also a Deputy, up in Valley county...and yes, he's probably angered a few for giving tickets...but you might not think about the fact that he's been vomited on when taking in drunks, spit on by unruly prisoners, propitioned by women trying to get out of a ticket...

It's a tough job...it really is.

So, yeah, give 'em a hug, or at the very least a "thank you for all you do".

Amen, handy. How horrific for your nephew to have to endure that. I pray for the well being of the surviving girl and that she knows Jesus.

Isaiah 43:2 NLT
When you go through deep waters,
I will be with you.
When you go through rivers of difficulty,
you will not drown.
When you walk through the fire of oppression,
you will not be burned up;
the flames will not consume you.

Mike , Alabaster and others: Although I don't disagree with you, we all need to see another perspective, in that the "authorities" (Mike, I will add the President, and every other representative to your list) we have here in the U. S., are our SERVANTS (not the other way around). They have sworn to protect US, and OUR rights. That fact is often overlooked whenever Rom.13 is presented.
