I need faith in God. Here is a summary of my experience:

I grew up in a very conservative segment of Christianity called the Church of Christ. I was taught to diligently study scripture. I loved to study the Bible. But, growing up in the church was not a good experience. I was excluded by the youth group because of my desire to learn more about the faith. I encountered so much hypocrisy. We were taught that it is a sin to worship God with musical instruments, and a sin to dance, so I bought an acappella music collection and enjoyed singing along to it. But when I went to church conferences and stayed in the hotel with church people, they looked at me like I was insane because I was not dancing to the sexually suggestive hip hop music. I was treated like a leper because of my faith, even at church. I usually had an entire pew all to myself, or a table all to myself in the fellowship hall. Needless to say, it was a living nightmare.

When I entered high school, I was introduced to a Bible study and prayer group at school. The students were from different denominations (those that I had been taught were going to hell because of their musical instruments), but what attracted me to them was their zeal for God's presence. They were more Christlike than the people at church, so I joined them. During my four years of high school, I grew in knowledge of the Bible and in personal knowledge of God by being a part of that group.

Upon entering college, I decided to become a religious studies major. I started at a Methodist college. But, once again, I faced rejection from the other religious studies students, not because I was pursuing sin, but because I did not want to get drunk with them. After being there for two years, I decided to change my major and transfer to the public university.

At the university, I met many unbelievers who had greater respect for my faith than the church people and the religious studies students. I could not make sense of the irony. But because I cherished their company and their integrity, I started to question everything I had been taught about who is saved and who is not. All this time, the question in my mind was, If the Holy Spirit is real, then why do Christians act like the world while the unbelievers act Christlike?

Then I decided to take the biggest risk of my life, and leave the Christian faith. I started reading atheist literature, but I could not bring myself to become atheist. Then I visited a Unitarian Universalist church. The people there were so welcoming and warm. I opened up to them, and they did not exclude me. I also bought tarot cards and crystals because I was attracted to the mystical element in them.

Then I moved away from my childhood town to a bigger city. I decided I would not be a Christian anymore.

But then I found myself very much alone. I do not have a Christian family anymore as my grandmother and mother are both deceased, and my grandmother was the Christian example in the family.

The one thing that has caused me to return to the faith is the fact that the unbelieving world says that homosexuality is okay. In other words, they call evil good.

I have gotten to the point where I am tired of fighting against a faith that did not fail me. Yes, people failed me, but God did not. The faith did not.

I have joined a Christian church and am getting involved in a small group and in a ministry. I still wonder at times why there is so much hypocrisy in the church if the Holy Spirit is supposed to be a living agent of change in the lives of believers. But being involved in a healthy church is what I need most right now.

Thanks for reading!

Greetings Tabula and thanks for sharing that with us.

I like what housepoint said, and would like to add to that if I may.

Use what you observe in life (things you mentioned like the condoning of homosexuality, double-lifestyles of Christians all that hypocrisy and so on) and use that to interpret Gods Word in the Bible, you will be amazed what you will see then.

I too grew up in a strict denomination where we had no TV's, were not allowed to listen to the radio or go to the beach, or associate with 'them' who were of different denominations and so on, until God opened my eyes and seen that they did have TV's, only they hid it in a custom cabinet.. lol. I knew who had TV's and who didn't, but I was taught to hide these facts, or pretend I didn't know, this way as a kid I could watch with them lol... so I too became a hypocrite.

But I have learned to use what I observe in life to interpret the Bible, and God has opened my eyes to things I never dreamed to understand, and some things even the great scholars can't comprehend, ... yes a worm like me, made of dust.

I no longer 'study the Bible', ... but go there for answers.

God bless you friend.

Your primary error is that you are looking at others for guidance, instead of looking solely at Jesus Christ. Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 6:12, "All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any " AS a result of this, you got legalism instead of liberty, and when you were with the UUs, you got licentiousness rather than true liberty.

Since you are in a new church, and you do not want to make another mistake, you need to determine their stance on other issues so you avoid more mistakes. Your sense of lonliness and wanting to belong are so strong that I wonder if you are vulnerable to a cult's teaching. Therefore, I believe that you need to ask the pastor two questions as you leave on Sunday.
1) Do you believe that the Bible is the only rule for both the faith and practice?
2) Do you believe that the New Testament Scriptures is inerrant as written by the Apostles?

Question 1 will tell you if they aim to obey God in everything that they do in the church, and question 2 will tell you how high theyregard the Word of God. The only acceptable answer for a true Bible-believing church & pastor is "Yes" on both questions. And those are very good wuestions to ask because they quickly get to the heart of the matter. If you get any sort of answer different than a "yes" you will know that this church and pastor do not take the Bible seriously. If they do not take the Bible seriously, then from where do they get their beliefs?

You should know that church is the best place for hypocrites to be! I say that because we ALL sin, and fall short of the goal of God in our lives. But true Christians seek to glorify God in everything they do, so while they may sing, play instruments or go to the movies (watch them on TV?) they are not hung up on a legalistic view of God who has a big "checklist" of what is acceptable or not. That would make Christianity a very easy religion to practice if we simply had rules to follow and guarantee our salvation.

Instead, we have a RELATIONAL God who wants to spend time with us, uniquely. It is in light of that relationship that we do things with as opposed to being for Jesus Christ to like. There is a great difference in those approaches. Hope this helps you grow in Christ!.

Be praying for you my friend. As know people that grow up and don't have a tv, listen to secular music, play video games, or anything like that . As I am friends with some of them. But still they are very nice people. Despite our differences. We can agree to disagree. And respect our ways of life. But the most important thing is that we are Christians and one in the Body of Christ. No matter what occurs.

We as Christians need to love thy neighbor as ourselves as well as treat others the way that you would want to be treated regardless! Hope all works out well for you. So sorry you went through that and are going through that. Be in prayer for you my friend. PM me if you have any questions as I hope to be able to answer them for you and perhaps even for myself! I have to learn too at 38!
