I was terminated from my last job (Americorps) and I wanted to know...

How can I make my resume stand out with a recent termination that was out of my control and being a stay-at-home father for 5 1/2 years?

I was doing one term with Americorps this past year and was terminated a couple weeks before the term ended. I was terminated because I wasn't working enough hours for them.

It was a rough year for me overall and wasn't how I wanted my term to go. I was sick which kept me from working a few days, my wife who has multiple sclerosis and I needed to stay home a few days to help her. I was injured on the job and was out for two months and I had hand surgery which kept me out of work for several months.

The reason why I was out of work for the injury and surgery is because there is no light duty work to be done except about once a month, which i would go in for. All my work was done outside since I worked in a State Park.

My supervisor for the year gave me a glowing final review saying that when I am there, I work hard, have pride in my work and do what it is that I am asked to do. He even said in his description that my time off was out of my control for the most part. He told me to have potential employers call him so that he can fully explain the situation, but that means that employers have to be willing to interview me and once they see a termination on my application, that keeps them from wanting to hire me.

I also have on my resume and job applications that I was a stay-at-home father for 5 1/2 years, which that surely does not help me with most employers. The reason for me saying that it doesn't help is because Rita Staffing had told me that they couldn't help me for that very reason. This was over 3 years ago when I moved to where I am now.

Also, even though I had surgery to correct a hand injury that I sustained on my own, the surgery wasn't successful and I am limited in what I am able to do for employment. It essentially has to be light duty things and not telemarketing. I tried telemarketing and I don't have the attitude for it and failed miserably while doing it, same with sales, I'm not a sales person as I don't have that cut throat attitude. Being a Christian man kinda means that I'm not to have a cut throat attitude that salesmen require, especially when it comes to car sales.

My skill set is warehousing and being an EMT. That's it. Both I am unable to do because of the heavy lifting involved in both jobs, or the dexterity needed being an EMT.

I have tried McDonalds, Burger King, Pizza Hut, Dominos, Walmart, restaurants as a host (something that I know is light duty) and so on and so forth.

The only one that took a chance was Americorps and because it's a federal program and no one else applied for that particular park I was accepted.

So that is my background.

We need a second income since my wife's SSDI doesn't pay enough for us to survive and her one day a week at Olive Garden while helps, is too little income.

First thing is that you do not want to say you were terminated, but say it was a termed position that ended. Seems like you have good references from your former boss and that is a blessing. I do not know where you live but maybe you could find a job driving a forklift, something in transit like driving a bus, or transporting the elderly to appointments or shopping. Just a few things off the top of my head. Will be keeping you in prayer as I know God will open that door for you.

Well, your written communication skills seem ok. I assume you type? What are some of your job skills / education? What line of work are you looking to get into? Can you work in an office?

I can type, but I'm not sure I can type fast enough for office work, plus I need to look at the keyboard in order to type. Office jobs that I have seen require you to have at least a 2 year degree. See below about my math skills.

I listed my job skills/education in my original post. I do know how to drive a fork lift, but I don't know of any jobs where that's your sole position. I am unable to lift with my other hand.

I have computer knowledge, I can build and repair computers, but it's all by experience and every computer job I have found requires a degree. A degree will not happen for me because my math skills are horrible. I was in special education for math right through High School. I never got above adding and subtracting fractions and that gives me issues if the bottom number isn't the same. I just don't understand math at all beyond what I mentioned. I was tutored in math, but it didn't help because I just never got it.

The degrees that I have found in computer repair all require at least above intermediate algebra.

As for what I am looking to get into, I really don't know. What I wanted to be, a flight medic is no longer in the cards. I can work with computers, but as I mentioned, need a degree.

I am limited in what I am able to do.

I don't know where your at but I work in the oilfields here in West Texas and all the pipeyards out here hire lift operators and that is their sole job. They'll load the casing pipe on trucks for delivery to the rigs. When their not loading trucks they'll drive around the yard and try to fool you and make you think their busy.:lol Seriously though, almost everything out here on trucks is loaded by lift operators. Anything like that where your at?
Our prayers are with you.
God bless, Westtexas

I was laid off years ago, and I went through a lot of company-paid employment counseling. I can probably tell you what they'd say to you. The offer to help you with an explanation for your separation should not be underestimated. In a time when jobs are scarce, getting referrals makes all the difference in the world. Ask anyone you know if they will give you the name and number of their direct report manager and if you can say they said it was okay to contact them.

Believe it or not, people generally want to help people, even if it's to make themselves feel good. Call and ask anyone who will listen if they will allow you to buy them a cup of coffee before work; that you aren't going to ask for a job; that you just want their advice about your plan. If you take me up on this, stay true to that. They'll know what you're in it for, so you don't have to say it. If they don't have a place for you, they might know someone who could use a guy with that kind of assertiveness.

Prayers for you, brother.
