I voted no for Good reasons that have already been stated, a personal opinion, however, I do not judge a man (or woman) based on their tattoos and am fairly indifferent to them in society. I do think that one getting faith based tattoos as a conversation starter...is an excuse to justify them and that it is not a good reason to get one. The Holy Spirit will lead us to witness and give us words to say. Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit?

You could certainly use a tat to convince yourself that it is a viable conversation starter, but you would only be deceiving yourself into believing it. Do you really think that the Holy Spirit needs a tatt to start a conversation? Really?

;)

You might not use this means.

But believe me they do work! :)

Blessings.

But believe me they do work!

You can make them work. I can see that. But, do you need them to do the work of the Lord? :chin

One could say the same about any one of the many means that the Lord may use through people in hugely varied walks of life.

When the tattoo design refers to something Scriptural, I guess it's hard to discount it altogether.

(There's also the sheer prevalence of the practice. For example if a preacher tries to tell Christian students that getting a tattoo would supposedly be rebellion against their parents, someone is likely to say: This is strange, because my mom has one.)

Blessings.

yes its ok to have tattoos,but i believe in moderation and modesty at the same time.Im not into legalism so I say yes.I have a crescent moon on my back and the only way it can be seen is if Im going swimming and wearing a bathing suit.Its something that means alot to me when I was little I thought of the moon as a father and friend until I came to know God at 17.

@hallowbonnie :

I know you mean, Yes, it's okay, rather than Yes, it's against the Law!

Maybe you're done tattooing now, though.

I do think it depends a lot on how such questions are asked, because if the question is supposedly: Is is against the Old Testament law, period? it kind of avoids the matter of whether the New Testament Christian is actually under the law.

Take care.

I think I am .I know Im completely free but I had to get over worrying about what other people think and I was so stuck on that .God went out of his way to help me with it and showed me he loved me for the strange girl I was and i didnt have to try to be someone else .Its beautiful because God replaced my need to be who my parents and other family wanted me to be.I have everything I need in God and Im free to be me

hallowbonnie: Yes, Galatians and Romans make it clear that the New Testament believer in the Lord Jesus, saved by His grace, is free from the law. (Not free to sin, but no longer under the law, as were Jews under the old covenant.)

Of course, some people, studying the theme of Christian liberty in Romans 14, might well decide eventually that a faith based tattoo, whether a Bible reference or Christian fish sign <><, etc. would for them be a positive witness help, but it's certainly not for all Christians, is it?

Take care.

Perhaps, but...are you certain that you are not merely 'reaching' for justification out of a sense of (hidden) vanity? IOW, have you ever seen a situation where not having a tattoo made it impossible to start a conversation? Are they absolutely necessary?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not 'against' them, nor do I look down on people that have them, and I have seen quite a few very tastefully done tatts...I simply do not have a preference for them, nor see a "need" for them.
@Edward :

Sounds like you have deep insights into supposed motives of other Christians! :) Actually I dont think you would really claim that you do and I appreciate what you're saying as a constructive contribution to the discussion.

Re. the very tastefully done tatts that you have seen, this is undoubtedly true and also some Christians would probably add that the combination of a tastefully done design with a definite truth content reflecting Scripture in some way, can also reinforce the motivation of those who might have a strong preference to use them as a witness means.

Blessings.

I think pulling up a Lamborghini with Jesus is Lord on the side might work. Certainly would like the chance to test it out.

Well, there's an interesting comment, anyway...

Not sure quite where you're heading, or how it links with tattoos, but interesting anyway.

Blessings.

Oh dear . . I did not mean to condemn anyone ! I thought I made it clear that this was just my personal preference. I offer my most humble apologies if I have offended anyone.

@cherovis :

Hey, what you said was fine and in keeping with Romans 14.22, I reckon.

You are probably also settled in your mind that you yourself won't go under the needle for a faith based tattoo, however small.

Blessings.

Re: Is Being quiet about this Against the Law?

I will offer a new poll to keep things simple.

In the spirit of keeping things simple, I too have taken part in your poll.
Thanks for asking. Even though you didn't ask, I'm in favor of secret ballots where all pro and all against must stand 30 yards away from the ballot box and where no chads may be left unconsidered.

You're right. I'm pretty settled with my decision not to be branded with "faith based" tattoo(s). I just show my Christian spirit through my actions & by the way I speak. :)

I actually like some of the tribal tattoo designs if they are simple & not over done. But I don't think I would ever want to wear one myself.

Ms @cherovis :

You share my thoughts here (highlighted), too, to some extent, I guess. Yes, like you say, a discreet, understated tribal design as an armband or wrist tattoo does look rather nice, I'll admit. Someone was talking about the idea of interlacing maybe a Bible reference within the thin swirling lines of a Celtic (variation on tribal, I guess) armband. Which to me does actually sound a lovely design concept.

I guess the idea here is that when others also express this to the wearer, there is then a positive and non-confrontational lead-in for testimony. (But only if the person has been motivated beforehand, of course.)

Blessings.

Agree with you or not, the reverse is also the same in backing down in your belief's based on the opinion of others. Condemning someone for a tattoo or even making a comment toward them, as opposed to backing down on a strong conviction about them are both bad things.

We have something called a Conscience we should never violate and why I get real irrated when other believes go into this law thing and that thing when someone says they keep a Sabbath day. It's just wrong and can get someone in trouble with the Lord real quick. If you want to keep the Sabbath unto the Lord, fine, have at it, won't hear a peep from me about it, or a tattoo.

Be blessed.

@Brother Mike :

Yes, some Christians might have a conscience against getting a tattoo, whether faith based or not.

It's also true that some Christians might have a conscience positively about getting a faith based one in order to provide extra opportunities for non-confrontational witness.

Blessings.

You did not condemn anyone. You stated your opinion. As sad as it may be the way of forums seems to be some folks are just word bullies... If folks are offended by your politely stated personal preference , about your personal self it is on them not you.

I was around here this evening, looking at the various posts and I don't think anyone here was actually offended at all by anything cherovis wrote. Maybe it's a subject that she finds quite interesting but hasn't had a lot of opportunity so far to discuss with other Christians from various angles.

Seems that allenwynne who started the thread has gone a little quiet, bless him.

Im not happy with mine only because was not thinking when i got them done and where to put them.

Everyone to there own. If people have them or like them, that is there personal choice. What they have is not on me so its not my business.
kiwidan: Sounds sensible, anyway.

I guess yours weren't faith based designs, then?

Blessings.

Yes, I know that in some states you can get tattooed at under 18. The legal age does vary quite a bit.

Blessings.
