I never liked being put on the spot due to abuse making me feel ashamed and I feared ridicule. If I were a teacher, I would use a teaching prop(like video) where the lights were slightly dimmed. Then I would ask questions not directed at anyone in particular so participation could be encouraged ,but not demanded. I saw a little girl at a school function utterly destroyed by a teacher demanding she participate in a program in front of a packed school cafeteria. As a parent, I had enough and yelled out "Leave her alone!" The teacher stopped then continued the emotional torture of the openly weeping child and I yelled out even louder "Leave her alone!" She finally let the child leave the stage.
