Is it true?

That it's not permitted to play at casinos and card games in Christianity?

In the Bible "casting lots" had the form, but not always the substance of gambling. The Roman soldier's method of gambling for the robe of Jesus was used in selecting Judas's successor (Luke 23:34; John 19:23-25; Acts 1:26). In the Old Testament, God intervened to remove the element of chance when "casting lots" was used to determine His will (1 Sam. 14:41-42).

Gambling violates the New Testament principle of stewardship. Christians are to be "faithful and sensible" stewards of the things entrusted to them by God (Luke 12:42). Someday we must give an account of our stewardship (Luke 16:1-2). The Bible teaches that God is the owner of the world and all things (Psalm 24:1; Exodus 18:4; Psalm 50:10-12). All belong to the Lord. Therefore no one has the right to foolishly involve himself in taking a risk in gambling away that which belongs to God. The probability of any one person's winning is so low and uncertain that gamblers risk and waste their Master's goods. The faithful and wise steward will conserve his resources, invest them profitably and use them for good (see Matthew chapter 25).

Should we expect anything good to come from ventures designed to benefit one person at the expense of another.

Yes. I can send you some USD in PokerStars if you want. It's rigged and I don't want to play there, maybe you wanna test you luck? PM me with your pokerstars account. Amen!

:confused Yes, this thread seems a bit confusing to me too.

Paul, True Christian, are you guys for real?

Does USD stand for United States Dollars? Because if the two of you have $300.00 to blow playing poker, might I suggest a healthy donation to your local food bank or church. In this bad economy, at lot of folks don't have enough money to put food on their tables. This is when we Christians need to step up to the plate and give to others, before blowing this kind of money on games.

Erm.

I play poker, i used to play at FullTilt. Neither of them are rigged.

Pojer, while having the form of gambling, has little of its substance (like what i did there goju?). It is a game of skill, strategy and psychology. You have to know when to make the right moves. Beginning players may rest on their 'luck' for a short amount of time but it's the good players that can consistently make money playing. It is a game played against other players, not the casino, so odds are not stacked against you.

No ,I'm not really impressed.

Gambling is sin, that pretty much sums it up to me.

And you're entitled to your opinion.

It's not my opinion,it's Gods word. I didn't decide it was a sin. You are certainly entitled to do as you please. :shrug

Classic.

To be fair though, it is your interpretation of the Bible. We all interpret, don't be embarrassed, it's a necessary part of being encultured people - we always perceive things through the lens of our culture.

Also, appealing to a few choice proof texts to support your position doesn't veto the discussion. What were the verses you found to be referring to gambling anyway?

There are many verses pertaining to this in the old and new testaments. Though it doesn't specifically say "do not gamble because it is a sin." There are alot of sins out there not specified in the bible.
Knowing gambling to be a sin is a common theme among christians. Knowing what and how to use your money is specific in the bible.

Proverbs 13:11 Dishonest money dwindles away,
but he who gathers money little by little makes it grow.

Proverbs 23:5 Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone,
for they will surely sprout wings
and fly off to the sky like an eagle.

Proverbs 16:33 The lot is cast into the lap,
but its every decision is from the Lord.

I Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

Hebrews 13:5 Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said,
“Never will I leave you;
never will I forsake you.â€

Ecclesiastes 5:10 Whoever loves money never has money enough;
whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income.
This too is meaningless.

For the believer in Jesus Christ, there should be no appeal to take part in gambling. Gambling clearly breaks several biblical principles which are central to a Christian's way of life. A Christian lifestyle is one that expresses faith in the loving care and provision of Almighty God, not in chance or luck (Matthew 6:33). A Christian seeks to love his neighbor, not to profit from a loss by someone else. A Christian seeks to avoid every form of greed and covetousness and to be content with what he has (see Hebrews 13:5). In addition, a Christian realizes that everything he possesses has been given in stewardship by God and should only be used in a way that honors Him.

"Signing up" or registering for a free gift is not gambling. It merely puts a person in a position to receive something that is to be given away, and this is the donor's way of selecting the recipient. However, in the case of gambling, a person is taking chances with hard-earned money.

Mr. Graham has said: "Gambling is nowhere approved in the Bible. Instead, the Bible stresses that the Christian should earn his living by honest work and effort, and this would exclude relying on chance (2 Thessalonians 3:10-12). The Bible tells us to 'abstain from all appearance of evil' (1 Thessalonians 5:22). Gambling has often done untold evil to people by making them lose money that could be used for good purposes or even the necessities of life. Money is given to us by God to be used for good, not evil. Anyone seeking to do God's will should not be involved in gambling."

He goes on to say, "Gambling is also wrong because of the motives involved. Some people gamble for thrills and excitement. Others gamble because they have a greedy and covetous attitude about money. Some gamble out of a false belief in luck. All of these motives are wrong for the Christian, for they are all self-centered and materialistic." Passages in the Bible which warn against greed and covetousness are Exodus 20:15, 17; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10; and Colossians 3:5.

A person who struggles with gambling addiction and the resulting troubles should seek help immediately, preferably from a local gospel-preaching pastor or a qualified, professional Christian counselor.
