Do you think there is an angel of death?Who do you think that is?

You mean the angel whose misson is to kill?
If that is your question...you remember the account when God asked HIS angel to destroy some of the children of Israel? That was when King David was on the throne

The scripture says, "Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire." Revelation 20:14 ESV

That this person at the moment of death either actually causes death or observes it,with the purpose of taking a person's soul to the abode of the dead.In fiction it is sometimes known as "the Grim Reaper".

I don't believe there is an angel of death.

Is there any scripture to support that idea?

Are you referring to the destroyer in Exodus that we've labeled the angel of death from..

Exodus 12:23 For the LORD will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the LORD will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you.

Maybe this is what your looking for Kathi.. :)

In Revelation 9:11, Abaddon is described as "The Destroyer",[6] the angel of the abyss,[6] and as the king of a plague of locusts resembling horses with crowned human faces, women's hair, lions' teeth, wings, iron breast-plates, and a tail with a scorpion's stinger that torments for five months anyone who does not have the seal of God on their foreheads.[7]

Actually the Bible does not support an angel of death.God and God alone is sovereign over the timing of our death. No angel or demon can cause our death before God's timing.Death is not an angel,a demon or a person.

Kathi,
My first web site, he Christian Newsletter," has been off the web for years now and I have since discarded all of my documentation but, just, after I was saved I did some research, all personal experience. Touched By An Angel was running back then and I was curious and solicited people for their personal knowledge.

One of our Deacons was my first contact and his experience was with his brother's conversion and death. He had been speaking with his older brother for years but had never been able to reach him. He was in the hospital and not expected to live and he knew he believed but needed to accept the gift of salvation. Long story short, he accepted the LORD and the next morning his brother asked him, on waking, "Who is that in the corner?"

Cob looked and told him there is no one there. His brother said, "Yes there is and he is dressed in white." They let it go and he ate breakfast. A few minutes later he asked Cob if he heard that music and asked where it was coming from? He did not here any music but his brother told him he had never heard anything that beautiful before. A few seconds later he looked at the other side of the bed, away from Cob, said, "Okay," and he died.

From the research, I remember only this one but there were a couple of others very similar and I, like Cob, believe that figure in white was his brother's guide... his Death Angel to guide him over the threshold, into Heaven.

Kathi,

I am not exactly sure what you want to do here. The OP seemed to be your asking an informational statement about the existence of an Angel of Death, and your latest post seems to be a "gotcha". So I am at a quandary as to the best way to answer you.

From what you originally stated, I would make a somewhat snarky and humorous comment that the Angel of Death was invented by Cecil B. Demille when he directed his epic movie, Exodus.

However I believe that you are looking for more than snark, so I am taking the Scripture that DeMille exercised his artistic license below, and based on Scripture here, I give you my answer.

Exodus 12:11 And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the LORD'S passover.
12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD.
13 And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt. (KJV)

Jeremiah 21: 8 And unto this people thou shalt say, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I set before you the way of life, and the way of death. (KJV)

Ezekiel 18: 32 For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye. (KJV)

Ezekiel 33:11
Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel? (KJV)

Hosea 13: 14 I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction: repentance shall be hid from mine eyes. (KJV)

Luke 12:5 But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him. (KJV)
From the above, it seems clear that it is God only who has the power of death, which most likely explains why suicide is such a horrid thing (because it arrogates the authority of God to yourself to make a permanent solution of a temporary problem). I also believe that Jesus was essentially saying the same thing in Luke 12:5.

However, there are also verses like these below in Job. And it is difficult to find a valid reason for God to tell Satan to not kill Job, if it was not within his ability to do so.

Job 1:14 And there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them:
15 And the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee. (KJV) (other similar verses omitted.)

Job 2:6
And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life. (KJV)
However, it is also within the ability of humankind to murder another human being, as we all know. So how can we reconcile the fact that the words of Jesus Christ, and 5 others in the OT indicate that it is the sole prerogative of God Almighty to take the life of a human, but both Satan and humans are also capable of taking lives? I believe the answer lies in the idea that the capacity to take a human life does not automatically create the right to do so. That is why when humans take on this capacity, as well as Satan, it is a presumptuous act of arrogance whereby either wrongfully assumes the role of God.

Yet, we also have this Scripture below which is the basis for capital punishment.

Genesis 9: 6
Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man. (KJV)
And in very limited and restrained ways mankind can do some things that are similar to the things that God does. All the animals can do is procreate their species or act as tools to help us work better, or be our pets. We can travel to the moon, send rockets to other planets and create a Global Positioning Service so that we can never get lost in our car.

There is no other creature under the heavens which bear the image of God. Angels do not have the image of God within them. Yes, they occupy a different realm than we do; theirs is spiritual, ours is physical, and for the time being, they have God-delegated authorities which humans do not possess, but it is the redeemed humans who will be exercising authority over those angelic beings.

So with this "mini essay" I hope that I have answered your questions.

Im thinking there are some exceptions
Exo 22
2 If a thief be found breaking up, and be smitten that he die, there shall no blood be shed for him.

An Angel of Death? As in one and that is his job, killing? I dunno. I know that Angels have killed before and are to be feared. One Angel slew 185K syrians in one night...two Angels went and essentially nuked Sodom & Gomorrah...Then ther was the first born thing with the destroyer...

Yeah Kathi, I think you're right...no Angels causing Death there. :wink :poke

IMO this is not an exception.

The context of this is a person committing the crime of burglary . If in act of that crime, the homeowner kills the thief, as a protection of his family, goods and "castle" the death of the homeowner shall not have the death penalty imposed upon him.

Wow, you must be sharp at 3:34 AM!

I don't think I would call Angels who show up when you give up the flesh to escort you to heaven, Angels of death...more along the lines of Angels of life, lol. Jesus overcame death, and to die is to gain, so no, those Angels are not AoD.

There's probably not a lone and specific Angel who's job it is to do is to kill and kill alone. God has an army, and like soldiers, they all get different sort of assignments here and there. Some are stronger than others, most have specialties that they're trained in, all are to be feared!

If there was an Angel of Death, then it is probably Michael. That's his specialty is fighting for Israel...

Please look at Genesis 18 and then ask to whom was Abraham pleading when he asked that Sodom not be destroyed? It is YHWH.

In chapter 19, yes, there were two angels, but neither has a title of Angel of Death nor such as Gabriel or Michael, both Archangels as an example. Therefore this seems to not support your statement.

That the angels did destroy and kill the cities and their inhabitants, there is no doubt. B ut due to any contravening evidence, it must be assumed that these two angels were carrying out the expressed will of YHWH.

I guess I'm missing your point there brother...What did I say that was inaccurate? There was two Angels, and that they were carrying out the will of YHWH is sort of a given, dont'cha think? :lol

I never said there was one designated angel. From my early studies I saw that God has angels taking care of us as we live. In the TV Series, Touched By An Angel, there was Andrew, the Angel Of Death that came when people died. I, too, disagree that any angel kills and I do not agree that the same angel is present for everyone's death but when I pass I fully expect my Spiritual Eyes to open, fully, and to see my help in the transition from natural, we call it, to Spiritual.

I know you didn't brother Taylor. Sorry if I sounded as if I was answering as if you had. I was speaking in general in response to the whole thread and in fact other conversations that I've had in this area before also with people. :)
