Is This Christian Backward Masking?

This is a terrific song by Phillips, Craig & Dean, in my opinion.

A friend and I were talking. One of us said he thought he heard what could be backward masking. I'll wait to hear what the overwhelming consensus is in the responses, and then I'll tell you which one of us thought this and which one thought he was crazy. :D

Seriously, listen to the song, because it is terrific. Or, if you have no taste, you can set it right at about 5:10. Listen closely. In the background, you'll hear whispering of some sort. If it is, this might be the first example of backward masking in a Christian song I/he can recall.

So, do I (or does he) have a wild imagination?

Well, they aren't trinitarians, so it could be...

Wow. :sad

There are several songs by PC&D that I really like, and I never would have thought that. Did you glean that from their lyrics, or read about it?

Sorry, I thought you would have known.

Of course, my comment was in jest and that is a beautiful song, but I just can't listen to their stuff for this reason. It seems wrong somehow.

The song is written by Jennie Lee Riddle, whom I know nothing about, even after some research.

... and yes, I have been aware of their Oneness Pentecostal beliefs for some time now.

It's one of the only songs recorded by them that i will listen to and perform.

I despise "I am a Friend of God."

One more thing:

I think the band Petra nailed it with this intentional backmask. The first half is the way it sounds normally and the second half is how it sounds when played backwards.

I agree that this attitude trivializes the awe of God. I've always said I'm uncomfortable with loosy-goosy public prayers when I hear them start out flippantly with, "Hey, God..." or something like that. :gah What? The God of all creation Who holds your existence in balance, and you approach His Throne with "Hey, God"? I don't think we should come as believers with a trembling heart, but I think prayers and songs like "I am a Friend of God" shift the attitude of listeners from a better place to one of dishonor. They literally suck reverence from the room.

That was a good article. :thumbsup

So, I think the sound in the song in the OP was just whispering of some sort rather than backmasking, but strange nonetheless. I'd like to hear their explanation for that.

BTW, this is not the first time a Christian song has been accused of having backmasking.

:shrug

I'd never heard of backward masking, until I saw this thread, and my first reaction was... eh? When I followed the link above, all I could do was laugh... :lol

That's ridiculous! Who would actually spend the time doing that?! What a massive waste of time! The example linked to above is... well, to put it bluntly, it takes a huge stretch of the imagination to decipher meaningful sentences out of that reversed track. Complete chance. And even if someone did intentionally back-mask 'Satanic' content into a 'Christian' song, what would the actual point be? Unless you play it backwards, you wouldn't even know it was there, so... that fell a bit flat...

That's amazing! I can't stop laughing...

I'm sorry if I'm offending anyone by finding this funny, I really am. But it just seems so silly, worrying about what a song says when it's reversed... probably if you reverse certain renditions of some well-known and cherished traditional hymns, you'd get snatches of what could be loosely interpreted as 'Satanic' words.
