Bible Study Is This What Jesus Was Saying?

In the book of Matthew chapter twenty verses seventeen through thirty-four, was the cup that Jesus was referring to His fate of sacrificing Himself and that's why He was telling His deciples that they weren't allowed to drink from it? That's what I gathered from it anyways because later on Jesus prays to have His cup taken away from Him.

I read through the reference you gave. Where does it say they were not allowed to drink of the cup? Here's what Jesus says in the NKJV, v23. “You will indeed drink My cup, [f]and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with;" So, not only were they allowed but it was going to be their fate.

Oh I'm sorry, I guess I wasn't reading it very carefully. At first Jesus asks them whether or not they think that they are capable of drinking it and then tells them that they are going to wind up drinking it but they won't be allowed to be awarded places of honor. So what exactly is He saying there then? Other than the fact that they were going to be baptized that is.
 
As far as them drinking the cup, it's similar to the matter of the cross. Only Jesus could accomplish what he did on the cross. But scripture tells us to pick up our cross and there is a link between His and ours.
Only He could drink the cup of suffering, shed His blood in an effectual sacrifice, but believers are told they will share in His suffering because of their being His and associated with Him by both the Father and a Christ hating world.

He was also telling them that they would drink from the cup. That is, they too will be persecuted and all except one, John, are believed to have been martyred.

When I read this story I also hear the mother of James and John asking Jesus to grant that her two sons would be seated at His left and right hand. In other words at a place that would bring glory to them. Are we to bring glory to ourselves?

Their mother asked Jesus if her sons could sit on his right an left hand in His kingdom, Matthew 20:21. In my mind she's looking for glory for her sons in that they would be sitting on the right and left hand of Jesus when He establishes His kingdom. In other words, she wants her sons to get the seat of highest honor. I see it as an arrogant request on her part.
 
John 15:18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. 19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. 20 Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also. 21 But all these things will they do unto you for my name's sake, because they know not him that sent me.

This is the cup we drink from as we have picked up our cross to follow Jesus and witness and testify of Him.
 
I figured that these three things could go here since they were also things that Jesus was saying. First of all this is when Jesus is discussing the withered fig tree in Matthew 21:18-22. I think He's saying that (gee how do I put this into words?) that the choices we make and the actions that we take (in other words fruit) shows what kind of people and Christians that we are is what I gathered from that in general.



The second thing that I have a question about I don't get at all though and it is found in Matthew 21:23-27, as well as Matthew 21:33-46. I'm sorry with all these questions but I do wish that Jesus didn't speak in parables so much. It becomes extremely confusing to me when He does. :confused
 
Cross reference Matthew 21:23-27 and Luke 5:21 as the chief priest and elders thought to themselves Jesus was speaking blasphemy in the temple by that of what He was teaching. They wanted to know whose authority He was under to teach such things. Jesus asked them where John's baptism came from, by John just doing this on his own or by God's authority to baptise for the remission of sin. They couldn't answer Jesus as they didn't have a clue so He would not tell them because they wouldn't have believed Him if He said it was by God's authority.

Matthew 21:33-46 There was this man that owned a vineyard. He rented it out to some farmers. When it was time that the fruit was ripe he sent his servants to the farmers to collect the fruit. The farmer took these servants of the owner and beat one of them, killed another and stoned the other.

The owner sent even more servants but the farmers treated them the same way. The owner then sent his own son (Jesus) figuring they would respect and honor him, but yet they also killed him as they wanted everything here on earth for themselves meaning worldly riches.

The explanation is found in vs.40, 41. No matter how many servants of the Lord that are sent out and killed for their witness and testifying of Christ, God will always send out more labors as we who are of Christ are all fruits of His labor. Just like those wicked farmers in the parable, all wicked men will be destroyed when Christ returns.

I like reading your questions and seeing you really deal with Scripture. I'm doing some of the same thing, right now...

and because we've both been labeled...me by the psych people, you by the schools...I thought I'd (once again...) share my go-to verse...

1 Corinthians 1:27

For me, personally, that whole section of Scripture has been a major blessing...its kind of affirming that "the least of these" have a special place in God's heart+in His plans for this world, so on.
