Isaiah 57:17-18

Hello, I am a new guy but you knew that already. What you didn't know is that title of this thread is my favourite passage from scripture(although it's like asking a mother to pick a favourite child), I'm a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, I graduated high-school this year, and after much prompting from friends and family next year I will be attending college for a Pre-Seminary/Director of Christian Education degree after receiving an EMT certification at a local community college.

My denomination may be traditional but don't let that fool you, I've been playing the drums for 8 years. I like trucks and all things mechanical and my main point for visiting here isn't necessarily debate but support, many of my friends are not Christians and their beliefs are... well "out there" is probably the nicest way of putting it. I look forward to talking with you all!

Hi brother, it's great to have your input among us. Until we are face to face with Jesus we will be growing in grace and knowledge of Him. May God richly bless you here in the things of God that will endure forever.
:wave2
P.S. Could you start a thread expounding why Isa 57:17-18 are your favorite scriptures?

Deborah13: Thanks for the welcome, I certainly do have a few busy years ahead of myself. I actually until a few days ago was dead set on attending an engineering school but several friends(agnostics and atheists included in that group of friends!) told me that I don't seem like the engineering type and that I should consider being a pastor/teacher. I've considered church work in the past but when I turned 17 I decided I'd try engineering so I've been calling around colleges today to see if I can get in this late and it seems that not only I can but these colleges are going to pay for half of my tuition right off the bat! Pretty cool how everything is falling into place just moments after making the decision.

Eugene: Thanks for the welcome! I'm not sure what I could add to the verse to give more meaning, perhaps my preferred translation is more "poetic" here than the one you're using? I have the same problem with Matthew 2:10 "When they saw the star, they were overjoyed."(NIV) which is really an awesome verse when you ponder what this means by comparing it to Isaiah 9:2 and realizing that the Magi(and everyone else) are the people living in darkness, and Matthew 2:10 perfectly reflects our reaction to the Gospel when we fully realize its implications. When you use the ESV however some of that poetry of Matthew 2:10 is lost in the literalness of the ESV translation: "When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy." - Matthew 2:10 ESV, sure it builds upon the meaning of "overjoyed" making it more apparent that it is a joy without any comparison to any other joy(which it is) but it doesn't really have the same ring to it in my opinion.

"Because of the iniquity of his unjust gain I was angry, I struck him; I hid my face and was angry, but he went on backsliding in the way of his own heart. I have seen his ways, but I will heal him; I will lead him and restore comfort to him and his mourners," - Isaiah 57:17-18 ESV

In my opinion it's the Old Testament version of "while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." - Romans 5:8b ESV, it shows that God knows we are truly deep inside our hearts poor and miserable sinners as a result of The Fall and only He has the power to save us from our corrupted nature. Hmmm.... perhaps a thread would've been pertinent.

Thank you Brother @The_Epsicle. That is indeed heavy duty discernment of applicable scripture to our condition prior to knowing our Savior. I look forward to further posts of edification from you.
May God greatly bless your time here in fellowship in Jesus' name.
:amen

Welcome brother! I have a feeling that I will enjoy your posts and your presence here with us at CFnet.

Btw, that verse is such a good verse. Thanks for sharing.
