I've been thinking about going to the Ukraine to find a nice girl. I'm single, in my 40's and I've never been married (and all that that implies). I've been to the Ukraine and, while it is a modest Country when it comes to finances, the women seem to have everything I am looking for in a mate. I don't speak Russian very well, but I'm learning. My friend (non-Christian) just married the girl that he met over there and he couldn't be happier.

What does everyone on the forum think?

I think it's worth a shot, but i would be cautious. Don't let your emotions and lack of a mate cloud your judgment. I have heard lots of stories about women overseas marrying American men just to get citizenship. The language barrier is something to take into account as well.

On the other hand, you are 40 and single, so why not see what is out there. Foreign women do seem to be attracted to American men, so already you're increasing your odds ;). My dad married a Russian woman and it worked out very well for him. You will never know unless you look, right?

Still, the odds are in favor of a women from Ukraine: only a 20% divorce rate for American men who marry women from there.

The other factor is that the Ukrainian men have a high mortality: many of them die in their late 40's due to taking drugs, heavy drinking or lack of exercise.

Many times, a Ukrainian man will have a couple 'girlfriends', even after getting married.

A good amount of them don't have a job, either--they expect the women to work, instead.

It's a toxic situation.

The funny thing is that the Ukraine is a very God oriented country, in spite of being influenced for so many years by Russia (atheism).

The issue that I'm mulling over is this: is is unethical for me to take advantage of this situation? True: the girls there are desperate, but some of them are also looking for true, sincere love (like me).

Pray and see what doors God opens. Perhaps you should first look into doing missions work over there and then allow God to introduce you to someone if that is His will.

I'm not sure whether you are talking about prearranged marriages. Here's something I know. A friend of mine got married to someone in the Phillipines. He met her through a friend in Canada. He married her and now there are troubles getting her over here. Also, because they don't see each other regularly, distrust is starting to occur. My opinion. Avoid those problems. It's true there are a huge number of foreigners that would love to immigrate to Canada or the United States, but some of this is pretty scammish. Really, alterior motives. I would say you need a relationship with someone you can see regularly and do this the better way.
I have to admit though... there are really some gorgeous desperate women in other countries. Just be wise, please.
