Japanese

Hey everyone! I am studying Japanese. Mostly for right now I am practicing writing Hiragana.
Is there anyone on this board who speaks Japanese and/or would like to study with me? I am at the very beginning. I don't want to be pressured to go faster than I want, but if anyone out there would like to study with me it would be righteously awesome!

I'm your huckleberry! One of my hobbies is studying the Japanese language. I've been poking at it a long time (since college), but haven't really got past intermediate yet. I still enjoy it, however. Let me know how I can assist.

My favorite word? How about nemasu, "to sleep".:nod

That reminds me..oyasumi nasai is good bye I got to bed now

What are you wanting to practice? Are you studying the actual words or how to write the characters?

Currently I'm mostly studying vocabulary and grammar. I can already read both kana, pretty useless with kanji (that's a future study plan).

Have you been to Japan? (Nihon e itta koto ga arimasu ka.)

How did your sister, God bless her soul, come to know Japanese?

She was stationed in Okinawa in the Military and after she got out she remained for a computer job with some corporation where she lived in Okinawa but made semi-frequent trips to Japan for computer stuff. I think she sort of had to learn it for her job.

I only know a few words =P
Not sure I should try learning now. But in the future, might be a good idea. It's very different from English and seems interesting.

It's not just different words, it's a different way of thinking. Japan has a very spiritual culture, although it makes me sad that it's not a Christian country.

The only word I recognize is Nihon. I also know (I would think) how to pronounce the sentence.

Wait... Is it Nihon or Nippon?

(Meaning Japan, right?)
Nippon is the formal pronunciation. You'll see the informal Nihon much more often.

For example, the Japanese word for Japanese (language) is Nihongo. Nihon means Japan, go means language.

The literal translation would be "Went to Japan thing does it exist?" Of course you'd actually translate it in English as "Have you ever been to Japan?".

And hardcore sub watchers wonder why the dubbed or translated version of anime and manga has to be worded differently. =P

Today I learned a word that I think questdriven would think is cool!

Kenka - which means Fight
the funny thing is that in martial art dojos. that isn't the Japanese word for to fight.
kumite. is. it may be closer to start competing.

I know the basics of the systems of Japanese that I have studied
ie shomen face region
yokomen side of face or from the side
above is for grappling arts(aikido and jujitsu)
gedan(groin area and below)
chudan(mid section/abdomen)
jodan(high or face area or throate and above
