I've never used JBP, but I've heard rave reviews for it. Not too hard, not too easy. Book one comes in two versions, Romaji and Kana. Obviously I lean toward the Kana version, but if you're disciplined you can do Romaji through Book 1, then tackle the Kana as soon as you open Book 2.
