Japanese

By the way, have you checked out http://www.japanesepod101.com? Endless easy-to-digest lessons, much of it free, or you can get very reasonable subscriptions for expanded learning tools. Fun bunch of sensei, too. It's more appealing to a dive-right-in approach as opposed to the more traditional structured lesson format. Just another weapon in the arsenal.

Hey, Angel, Ohisashiburi desu. How's the Japanese coming lately?

My son married a Japanese girl in 2002, htey are still married. He lives in Japan, as he is in the Navy.

The two of them married only BARELY speaking - neither knew the other's language. But today, they are both bilingual, Yuki is even "americanized" to the point that she speaks english very "casually" and has learned to speak as a native speaker. She has no issue using "I" or talking about herself. But Kevin has told me it took a lot of time to get her to accept this.

I tried to learn it, bought Rosetta Stone and liked it -but in the past two years, I am traveling so much and working long hours, I all but gave up on it.

Fascinating language and culture.

Well out of all the subbed anime I have watched... All it taught me was "Baka!!!"
Yeah those exclamations needed to be there. Lol, actually I know Ai and Koi which both roughy mean Love. I believe Renai is the proper way to say Love but... I could be wrong. It's a complicated language.

Ao means blue...I think. Know this because I watch/read Blue Exorcist. The untranslated title is Ao no Exorcist.

Indeed it means blue but, the way its used it could also mean green(Midori). Most of the time there referring to the color of something in terms of shades.

青 / 青色 (ao / ao-iro) - blue/green / ブリュ (buryu) - blue

Shades of blue and blue-related expressions

水色 (mizudori) - light blue (water colour)濃紺 (nōkon) - dark blue
紺色 (kon-iro) - deep blue
紺青 (konshō) - navy blue
空色 (sora-iro) - sky-blue
碧眼 (hekigan) - blue eyes

(midori) - green
Shades of green and green-related expressions

碧色 (hekishoku) - green; emerald
黄緑 (kimidori) / 浅緑 (asamidori) - light green
草色 (kuchi-iro) / 暗緑 (hisui-iro) - dark green

Nice writeup on the whole blue-green thing in Japanese, jojoe. Quite a few expressions I didn't know.

Angel, what got you interested in Japanese in the first place? Just wondering.

Anime. I draw and paint, so I was really into it. When I was 17 I would look for anime galleries and draw the characters even if I had never seen the anime. It's pretty expensive. I don't buy Manga because its expensive and quick to read. If you have FB you can see my art. Same for you questdriven I know youre an artist and could appreciate it.

Ah, very good. Not into it myself, but I know a lot of people get into Japanese from an interest in anime. Do you have a link?

Big on anime here, but I think I make that obvious...
A lot of people get into Japanese language or culture because of anime. Though, I have to admit that because of stigma from the internet and it's rabid anti-anime people frowning upon this and calling anyone who likes anime and Japanese culture "weeaboos" (and God forbid the two are in any way connected), I'm loathe to admit it.
I think of it more as, anime opened me up to a world of interesting culture, rather than I like the culture strictly because of anime. I'm not into the culture or language more than casually, though, and I don't claim to be an expert in any fashion because I'm clearly not.
And heck, if people can get into science because of an interest in science fiction like Star Trek, they can get into another language by watching cartoons. :S

I went off on a tangent there...
