Yes unfortunately it is true. But fortunately I have learned to look past that part because the music alone is worth it!
I thought the same to in the original especially with the song she sang about not knowing how to love him as it sounded like a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship.
Well, think about it. We have thousands of years of stodgy old men telling us how we are to reverently approach Jesus. All this gal knew was that she was super attracted to this strange outlaw rebel who was hunted by the authorities, and hid in caves a lot with His little band. And when He did appear in public, He actually WAS a Superstar to the common people. Of course this would be a super-charged relationship that she couldn't compare to anything she had ever known or heard about before. She literally "didn't know how to love Him... What to do... How to move Him."
I keep saying it over and over again...... when you do the Bible, PUT ON YOUR SANDALS. (Go back to actually experience life as though you were living in that specific moment in time.)

Okay guys let me just take a moment to do a comparison to last night's show and the real movie. First I'll post the one that John Legend totally butchered last night.
Now here's the real one,.. the awesome one performed by Ted Neeley.
Umm... scratch that first thing I said. There's absolutely no comparison whatsoever. I don't think there is a man alive or ever lived that can top Ted's performance of that song.

Now THAT is some great writing! Coming from this person it's entirely in character. One can hardly read the Gospels and avoid questions like this. (Initially, at least; we can certainly grow past that)
LOL It's messy death not message death! But anyway, as I said before. It's not really meant to be an accurate biblical telling. I just love the beat to that song. It's really catchy!

I grew up listening to my Sister sing this song. This is the take I always had of it too. (Said Sister grew up to be one of the Country's best singing teachers)
I think the Easter remake of JCS with John Legend is something falling along the lines of that what presented itself in the play, Hamilton.
It is true, nothing overcomes Neeley's performance. Legend in contemporary clothes especially was rather silly.
I've never seen Hamilton, it just doesn't look like something that I would be interested in. But my niece is absolutely obsessed with it. She's going to see the play this summer with her father. (my brother)
I never even heard of The Prophet before, but yeah when I first saw Superstar I'm like thinking to myself,.. wow God really rocks lol! Maybe I should to get to know Him better. However, just like I was telling my mother at dinner, unfortunately they left the part out of the Bible where Jesus melted all of His disciple's faces.

John Legend did it a full step higher, and also sang parts almost a full octave lower than Ted. Thats pretty impressive! He did a great job of all of it except that one passage you hate, which he did in falsetto. That one line also includes notes Ted didn't have to try to sing, which is a big part of why Ted could make it sound better.
The Director should've done a re-write of that part, so John didn't sound so weak at the strongest part of the song. Failing that, the Producer should've stepped in and demanded somebody do something before the show goes on.
I wouldn't blame John for that, but I realize once you hear that one part it's all over, lol

It was my other Sister that had Kahlil Gibran quotes all over the place. I never read any of his works though

That one phrase John sings that sounds so weak, that when Ted sings it becomes facemelt- the high part
Oh yeah, that. I personally think that Ted sung the whole song better than John did. However at least John can say he tried.
