Jolly ole Saint Nick!

Santa: holy or saint!
Nick / Claus: Nicholas!

Santa Claus is really St. Nicholas of Myrna in Asia-minor, a fourth-century Catholic bishop in Turkey. (“Santa Claus” comes from the Dutch Sinterklaas, which means “St. Nicholas.”) Here are some aspects of the legend surrounding the saint that inspired the famous figure of Santa Claus:

St. Nicholas was born in 310 A.D., in a time of persecution, in which the teachings of Christ were believed to oppose those of the Roman Empire. St. Nicholas’ parents were wealthy people and had instilled in their son a spirit of generosity, among other virtues. On one occasion, this would lead him to exchange his horse for a slave in an auction, so he could free him. He carried out all his works of charity in the name of Jesus, which led many to convert to Christianity with his example. After his parents died when he was still a young man, he began giving even more generously to those in need.

It’s said that on another occasion, he learned of three young women who wanted to marry, but whose father didn’t have the necessary means to marry them. When Nicholas found out, pretending to do a work of charity without being noticed, he dropped a few golden coins down the chimney, which coincidentally fell in the sewn cotton stockings the young ladies had left drying. This is the origin of the common practice of hanging stockings by the chimney and receiving gifts in them.

In St. Nicholas’ time, the emperor Diocletian ordered the eradication all Christians. It was around this time that St. Nicholas became bishop. In the midst of the persecution, he is said to never have lost his good sense of humor and joy, especially when talking with children about the birth of Jesus — thus Santa’s love for children and his “ho, ho, ho.”

In one of the persecutions, he was captured and imprisoned for almost 30 years. From his cell, he kept growing in holiness and prayed for the Church, even as the prison guards taunted him, telling him that the Christian faith was over.

When Constantine, the emperor of Rome, converted to Christianity, Bishop Nicholas was finally released. Now an old man with long hair and a white beard, he returned to his city convinced he was the only believer left.

His surprise was great when he arrived at the city and saw that the Cathedral had been rebuilt. He walked in to a singing choir — Christmas was being celebrated. Thus, his ties to Christmas.

To give a deeper meaning to this tradition, we must promote St. Nicholas’ example, who teaches us to be generous, to give to those in need and have a deep love for our neighbor. He teaches us to be attentive to the needs of others, to turn away from our selfishness, and to detach ourselves not only of material things, but also of our own selves and our time.

Gifts to poor needy also comes from a wealthy miser who was finally converted and gave all his wealth to bishop Nicholas who went about at night (secretly) giving to the poor and needy and even buying salves out of bondage and granting them freedom!

Nonetheless, with all of this in mind, the heart of Christmas is still the child Jesus, who is the Son of God, born of the Virgin Mary in a stable in Bethlehem for the salvation of all peoples.

Christmas scriptures!

Isa 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Matt 1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.

19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily.

20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lordappeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.

21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.

22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,

23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

Lk 2:1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.

2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)

3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)

5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.

18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.

20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

Because Jesus is the reason for the season and we should be celebrating Him and not Santa Claus.

Look at all the stress that has stemmed out of St Nick who no doubt was charitable and had a good heart and intentions, but now families put themselves in debt or just do not have money to buy presents for their children, little lone food to feed them. Christmas has turned into Xmas and Happy Holidays leaving out the very reason we should be celebrating.

Isa 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Happy Birthday Jesus as we celebrate you today

Hi donadams,

Beautiful post!
A lot of information.

It would be nice to post why St. Francis created the nativity scene.
You have a good way with words: Want to have a go at it?

Happy Birthday Jesus as we celebrate you today
I grew up in the states and we tend to like what we're used to.

When I moved here, Christmas was still being celebrated the old-fashioned way, explanation to follow.

Christmas was left to celebrate Christmas. Christ's birth.
Families got together and had dinner as a family unit and attention was given to
the reason for the season, as you put it.

Gifts to the children were given, but on January 6th. The Epiphany.
The Epiphany would be when the kinds found Jesus in the stable and brought Him the gifts.
So, it seemed to make sense to bring the gifts out at this time.

Epiphany means revelation, apparition, manifestation, of something.
In Christianity it celebrates the manifestation of God incarnate or Theophany.
God's gift to the world.

It was difficult to accept this at the beginning.
A few years in and the tradition had changed and children were receiving gifts at Christmas.
This was due to all the TV ads and movies and a whole new generation of parents that wanted to be modern.

The more I think of it, the more the old-fashioned way makes sense.
And Christmas would be left to celebrate Christ's birth day.

Few churches actually have the ephinany .

Not even the Lutherans or Catholics have it mentioned openly. They may do it but closing the Business days they don't .

I literally would be working up to today if I didn't either take PTO or work for the city . Many places don't close at all.some restaurants don't close .

It's easier here because all holidays are religious.
We do celebrate Labor Day.

Santa Lucia is not celebrated here.
Lots of places with saints names here and there.
Named by Christians and Christian conquerors over there.

Some saints have lead extraordinary lives.
I haven't studied them, but I'm sorry I haven't.

Amen! I too oppose the commercial Christmas!

Saint Nick is a bishop and a witness for Christ! Acts 1;8

The commercial Christmas is chraper at Walmart!
But the real Christmas can only be found “round yon virgin mother and child”!

I don’t know why, perhaps to glorify Christ, he was also a troubadour and sang carols at Christmas time!

People were very poor at the time of St. Francis,
13th century.

He wanted to spread the word of God.
Remember that God told him to build His church.
He thought God meant an old church that is still there, but God meant His Church, His Body.

To allow for people to understand the story of the first Christmas better, he decided to build a Nativity Scene, at the church if I remember.
The Scene of the Birth.
Nativity. Birth.
