Judas Iscariot: Saved for a while.

I would like to examine some scriptures that involve Judas Iscariot, to see if we can learn from his mistakes, and avoid falling away from Christ, as we see the Day of the Lord approaching.

So Jesus said to them, “Assuredly I say to you, that in the regeneration, when the Son of Man sits on the throne of His glory, you who have followed Me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Matthew 19:28

  • Judas could have reigned with Jesus Christ, had he continued with the Lord.
  • This was spoken to Judas Iscariot, before he betrayed Jesus.
  • Judas, like the rest of us, had a choice to make during his life.

15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples(altogether the number of names was about a hundred and twenty), and said, 16 “Men and brethren, this Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus; 17 for he was numbered with us and obtained a part in this ministry.”
18 (Now this man purchased a field with the wages of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his entrails gushed out.19 And it became known to all those dwelling in Jerusalem; so that field is called in their own language, Akel Dama, that is, Field of Blood.)

20 “For it is written in the Book of Psalms: ‘Let his dwelling place be desolate, and let no one live in it’;
and, ‘Let another take his office.’ Acts 1:16-20

  • Let their dwelling place be desolate; Let no one live in their tents.26 For they persecute the ones You have struck, And talk of the grief of those You have wounded.27 Add iniquity to their iniquity, And let them not come into Your righteousness. 28 Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, And not be written with the righteous. Psalm 69:25-28

Judas Iscariot ended up being "blotted out" of the book of life, as he did not overcome, but fell away.

And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease. 2 Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Cananite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him. Matthew 10:1-4

Judas was "His disciple", and one of "His sheep", at one time, before he fell away.

Judas Iscariot was a disciple of Jesus Christ, for 3 years, and was promoted to Apostle, as he "heard His Voice", "followed Him", as was "known by Jesus Christ", as a "trusted friend", before Judas betrayed Him.

Even my own familiar friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted up his heel against me. Psalm 41:9

Judas Iscariot was called one of "His sheep", but became lost. Judas was sent out as a "sheep" among wolves, in which he was not a wolf at that time, but became a wolf when he betrayed Jesus.

16 “Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. Matthew 10:16

27 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. 28 And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. John 10:27-28

Judas chose to turn away from Christ, in a time of temptation, as no one "snatched him" away from Christ.

Judas heard His Voice, and followed Him... for a while.

This should inform us of quite a lot:

John 13:

13 Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.

2 And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him;

3 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;

4 He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.

5 After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.

6 Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?

7 Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.

8 Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.

9 Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.

10 Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.

Yes it tells us that Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus Christ.

Key verse: And supper being ended, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray Him.

Yes, we understand that Judas betrayed Jesus Christ, that is the point of this discussion.

What I have done is point out the scriptures, that teach us about Judas Iscariot, before he fell away from Christ.

...It is enough for a disciple that he be like his teacher, and a servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more will they call those of his household! Matthew 10:25

5 And Moses indeed was faithful in all His house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which would be spoken afterward, 6 but Christ as a Son over His own house, whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end.
Hebrews 3:5-6

It is a false teaching that Judas was saved at all.

Matthew 26:24

First John 2:19
declares, “They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.”

https://gotquestions.org/give-back-salvation.html
Question: "Can a Christian 'give back' salvation?"

Answer:
The short answer to this question is, no, a true Christian cannot “give back” salvation. Oddly enough, some who agree that a Christian cannot “lose” his salvation still believe that salvation can be “given back” to God. Some who hold this viewpoint will take Romans 8:38-39 and say that while nothing outside of us can separate us from God, we ourselves can choose, in our free will, to separate ourselves from God. This is not only unbiblical; it defies all logic.

John 6:68 Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

69 And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.

70 Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?

Doctrinal Statement
We believe that the Bible is inspired by God in its entirety, and is without error in the original autographs, a complete and final written revelation from God.

We believe that there is only one God, who is eternal and immutable, and manifests Himself in three distinct Persons; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

We believe that Jesus of Nazareth is the promised Messiah, born of a virgin, totally without sin, God in human flesh, the One Who died on the cross for our sins, was buried, rose again from the dead on the third day, and ascended to the right hand of the Father in heaven, where He now intercedes for us who believe in Him.

We believe that all humanity is lost and born with a sinful nature, and can only be saved by a personal faith in the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, and not by any human merit or performance.

We believe in a personal devil, called Satan, who, along with all his angels, called demons or evil spirits, are destined to spend eternity in hell, and now seek to deceive the world, defeat the believers, and destroy the work of God, but can be resisted by believers, who are protected by God and the intercession of Jesus Christ our Lord.

We believe that heaven is a real place where the saved will dwell forever, and that hell is a literal place of torment where unbelievers will be punished.

We believe that genuine believers are born again by the Holy Spirit of God, and are indwelt, baptized into the body of Christ, the true church, and sealed by the Holy Spirit, and thus, unable to be separated from the love of Jesus Christ.

We believe that all believers need to be filled and empowered by the Holy Spirit to live a godly life and to be bold in our witness for the Lord.

We believe in the spiritual unity of all genuine believers in the Lord Jesus Christ.

I see nothing in the above posts that disagree with the SOF

Great scripture.
What's your point?

We know Satan tempted Judas to betray Jesus.

Do you believe it is impossible for a Christian to betray Jesus Christ today.

If a Christian takes the mark of the beast, and worships the antichrist, rather than suffer persecution, isn't that betraying Jesus Christ?

Why is Foxes book of Martyrs filled with those who refused to renounce Christ, but rather they suffered and died, as opposed to those who chose to bow down to the Pope and serve Rome, having departed from the faith?

My point is Jesus referred to Judas as a devil.. and in another place as the son of perdition.. never as a believer..

Please explain how it is a person hears His voice and follows Him for 3 years as a disciple and gets made an Apostle, and is sent out as an Apostle, but somehow doesn't believe in Jesus?

Please comment on all the scriptures and points I made.

I would like to examine some scriptures that involve Judas Iscariot, to see if we can learn from his mistakes, and avoid falling away from Christ, as we see the Day of the Lord approaching.

You should examine all of the Scripture involving Judas if you want to avoid mistakes, not just "some" of the Scripture. Notice none of the ones you posted say that Judas fell away from Christ (Messiah). It is a mistake to assume Judas "fell away from Christ" without any Biblical evidence.

John 6:63-65, 69-71 (LEB). The Spirit is the one who gives life; the flesh profits nothing.

Judas had not been given The Spirit. None of the Twelve had, until after Jesus' resurrection and ascension.

The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life. But there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.

Judas could have listened to Jesus' word and believed in Him, rather than just listening to Him and betraying Him. Not believing Jesus is Christ (Messiah, The Holy One) from the beginning is, by definition, an unbeliever. FROM the beginning, Judas did not believe. Straight from Jesus. Not 'believed fo a awhile', straight from you.

And he [Jesus] said, “Because of this I said to you that no one can come to me unless it has been granted to him by the Father.”

Because of this (Judas's unbelief and betrayal) is why Jesus told the disciples that no one (including Judas) could come to Jesus Christ.

Peter, (not Jesus), said:
And we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”

Jesus replied to them,
“Did I not choose you, the twelve, and one of you is the devil?” Now he was speaking about Judas son of Simon Iscariot, because this one—one of the twelve—was going to betray him.

Clearly, one of the twelve (Judas) was chosen because he did NOT believe Christ from the beginning and was going to betray Jesus.

Please explain how it is a person hears His voice and follows Him for 3 years as a disciple and gets made an Apostle, and is sent out as an Apostle, but somehow doesn't believe in Jesus?

What do you mean "believe in Jesus"?
1. Believe Jesus was a man? Even atheists believe Jesus was a man.

2. Believe Jesus was the God-Man, the Messiah, the Holy One of God? If that's what you mean then the answer is easy, simply believe what Jesus said about Judas, correcting Peter.

How could Judas not believe that Jesus was the Son of God?

He was there when Jesus walked on water, healed the sick, blind see, deaf hear, and lame walk.

He was trusted with the "Treasury" of the money during their ministry... A very high honor. (Today the bookkeeper of the church's checkbook is called a Judas; affectionately of course)

So according to John 3:16 Judas was saved...but Jesus also said that he was A Devil.

And his failure, his fall from grace was predicted in scripture hundreds of years before it happened. "Let another take his place" when they cast lots to get Matthias to fulfill Judas's obligations.

So....
Where or what was Judas's major malfunction to get him to fail so miserably?

Judas was the treasurer and was stealing money from the pot, as it were. He was following Christ in His ministry, yet not "following" Christ in belief and change of heart. I believe that Judas was in it for himself. It was a good gig, he got food and publicity and took cash when he needed it.....
He was not saved and had no desire to be so.

John 12:6King James Version (KJV)

6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.

Nowhere in scripture will you find Judas that was a believer, he walked with Jesus but didn't know him..

Matthew 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

I believe the point of the discussion Jesus had with Peter was that he (Peter) was already clean, but Judas was not.

Embrace the paradox.

Over the years I've come to understand why people have accepted antichrist the son of perdition.. If most think Judas was a believer they'll think antichrist/the son of perdition is a believer..

John 12:4 Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, which should betray him,

5 Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?

6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.

Three hundred pence was the equivalent to a years wages.. who is holding the bag today?

How could Judas not believe that Jesus was the Son of God?

He was there when Jesus walked on water, healed the sick, blind see, deaf hear, and lame walk.
So did (and do) others see miracles, yet not believe Jesus is the Son of God.

Speaking to the 11 (Judas Iscariot was dead) Jesus said:
Acts 1:8 (LEB) But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the farthest part of the earth.”

It was not until after His death and resurrection that they received the power of The Holy Spirit necessary for them (the 11 plus Matthias) to witness (attest to) the fact that Jesus is Christ (Messiah).

John 14:26 (LEB) But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name—that one will teach you all things, and will remind you of everything that I said to you.

When Jesus spoke 14:26 to them (the eleven), they still needed to be taught things by the Holy Spirit. Judas Iscariot never had the Holy Spirit! That's how he could see miracles, eat, drink, listen, follow, keep money etc. with Jesus for years and NOT believe Jesus was the Son of God.

I didn't believe either until I was baptized with the Holy Spirit. No one can.

Acts 15:8 (LEB) And God, who knows the heart, testified to them by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as he also did to us.
1 John 4:2-4 (LEB) By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God, and this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world. You are from God, little children, and have conquered them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.

Children of God have conquered the world (including death). Why? Precisely because the one who is in us IS greater than the world (including death).

Hypothetical death of a child of God is NOT a failure of the child. It would be (if true) a failure of "the one who is in you".
