its a high school memories for the older folks. im too young to have been through that. but I have been into the ruins of these to know what they are like.

look at the bottom right corner of the image and for the baseball like field. those that have been to one will know what they are easily. this was used up to the early 90's if I recall.

I can't make out much of anything in enough detail in that picture to know what it is. My poor eyes just aren't working very well anymore it seems. :-(

Oh, of course, a drive in theater!!! Spent many a happy night in a few of those! There's still a few of them around.

that one in the topo date 12-29-70, and one other fascinated me as a kid. I never new what those where. they were just screens from a distance from the road. the first one that I barely remember was torn down before I could get in to see any movie. It close in 1980

fond memories of those dating days wayyyyy back in the day!!!. there is only one left that I know of, but not in our immediate area

Drive in theatre was what I was thinking, but I haven't seen many pics of them from that angle. It's usually from the other side. Very interesting jasonc

the story of why I know what they look like that is comical. I was looking for the old airfield that was south of the road called 12th st back in the 50's or the eariliest image I could find. well the topo of 43, had nothing and later on but I found that it had the cemetery. it was the only paved thing on Dixie hwy. I then moved up the years and notice the image of the drive as shown but thought that was some unusual farm as it was near a ton of groves. later on as per location approxametly and the others I know on fb that was the location of the only drive in the county.

I may post that image. it also remained there and is visible in the 81 topo.

Now, you can see how easily I made that mistake until I learned what that was and zoomed in on that image as shown. look for the baseball looking field. all drive in theatres look like that from the air.

Kathi, give the location of where you remember yours I bet I can find something on it .

I thought it was cool when they started broadcasting the sound through a radio station so you could use your car stereo system, rather than that ancient speaker you could only put on one of the doors to hear the movie. Of course that meant you were draining your battery for however long the movie was, or you had to keep your motor running and possibly asphyxiate the people around you.

that was later on the drive in era. I don't know why they don't go back to this. its not like we cant do it. shoot sonic the fast food joint is a revamped 50ish era fast food joint.

I prefer the radio station. Although, now they could almost do a live podcast and provide free wifi to pipe the sound through whatever device people want to use. They could also cut costs by going digital on the projectors as well, since they could run them off of movie files, instead of actually using the film, which deteriorates.

I agree but I don't know why few have restarted these. shoot for years the one in my avatar sat as some junkyard and mechanic lot and now is torn down(the screen only) and the other in the pic is now part of some dealership that used the screen for advertisments and even had it light as a signage. that was after a protest from the townsfolk. I don't live in the city of fort pierce where both my avatar and also the 4th post are in. the image of the topo in post 12, is the town I live in.

I've heard there is still a working one somewhere near where I live in NW Washington, but never been there. The last time I was in one was 1984. I remember it well because I went with a friend's girlfriend after he decided he was tired of her and passed her off to me. We were rather decedent back then! That one still had the ancient tinny sounding speakers that you had to hang on your window. I never did go to one that broadcast a radio signal Probably because the ones around me were all built in a way you could see the movie from outside, so it would be too easy for people to simply park outside and get the sound as well. (Yeah, we were resourceful as well as decedent back then.)
