Who says we have to stop. If there are no objections, here are a few more bits of trivia.

  1. (This one is easy) A bit is an eight of a byte, but way before anybody even dreamed of anything like a computer, a bit was an eighth of something else. What?
  2. Who said "If the earth dies, you die. If you die, the earth lives.", and to whom and why?
  3. What country has the oldest parliament in the world?
The TOG

I don't know that answers to any of those.Someone else will have to give it a try.

I forgot to classify these like the others were. It might give people a little hint for at least one of them.

The world's oldest continuous Parliament is a title claimed by the Tynwald in the Isle of Man, which dates back to 979

While that is a bit, it's not an eighth of anything. The bit I'm looking for is 1/8 of something.

Dr. Melissa Clouthier

Incorrect.

The world's oldest continuous Parliament is a title claimed by the Tynwald in the Isle of Man, which dates back to 979

Yes and no. This is the worlds oldest continuous parliament, as you say, but the one I'm looking for is older. It was discontinued in 1799 and resumed 45 years later in 1844. Since I didn't specify, you get that one counted as correct, but I would like to see if someone can come up with the one I'm thinking of.

I think a bit was coinage but I don't know what coinage it was an 1/8 of.

You're right. It was "coinage", although no mint ever made bits. People made them themselves by cutting something else into 8 pieces. Maybe you can figure out what was cut up if you think of the bits in pairs.

lol. I know it's a dollar in the US anyway.

Roger Miller "King of the Road"
Trailers for sale or rent, rooms to let, 50 cents.......
Ah but four hrs. of pushin' a broom buys a 8X12, four bit room....

I was trying to remember all the reasons I knew that, reading it in historical novels, etc. and then ha ha, King of the Road. Who says silly country music isn't educational. :cool2

Correct. :woot2

Back when the US dollar was actually worth something, it was a silver coin. People used to cut it up into 8 pieces, each of which was called a bit. And just as 2/8 = 1/4, so two bits make one quarter.

Greece is a very old country, much older than the country with the oldest parliament, but it's not the right answer. The one you're looking for is a northern European country. And in case anybody didn't notice, the quote is under the heading "Entertainment". It's from a movie.
