43. For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, 44 for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush.45 The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. (ESV)

What can we surmise out of this passage?

Can it relate to how we treat others (such as a spouse?)
So....

But wouldn't this mean that worship of God, acts of service, and loving kindness towards others is a result of a heart condition and not a duty or requirement.

It relates to who we truly are. The fruit of any tree is how you know what kind of tree it is.

The passage is about the ability to determine the character of a person by observing his behavior.
It's really quite simple; a good person habitually does good things and a bad person habitually does bad things.

It's not so much about how we treat others as it is about determining the character of another person. (Or yourself!)

Can it not be both
Interesting question....

Eph 2:10 says that God created us in Christ Jesus to do good works as our way of life.
That sounds to me like a job description: do good works.
That sounds like a duty requirement.

But Jesus also gave us a command: "Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another." (Jhn 13:34)

It seems to me that Jesus seems to indicate the "both" answer.

Jhn 15:12-14
This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. (A commandment creates a duty)
Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. (Love chooses others over self)
You are my friends if you do what I command you.

I Corinthians 15:9 KJV
For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.
10 But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.

Good treasure of heart. Let me see - original desperately wicked and deceitful above all things heart. Awareness of sin starts in word in heart. John's baptism confesses sins. The natural pacemaker of the heart looks like a crucified man (the desperately wicked heart needs all the help available - the death, buried, resurrected, assended, sender of Holy Spirt- Jesus).

The promise of word in heart and mind ties heart with mind. The meditations of the heart go through to the speech center of the brain. We confess our sins and believe on the redemption purchased by Jesus, and speak the gospel.

Our mouth presents:
Romans 7:25 KJV
I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

The good tree grew up out of dry ground (Jesus). If you have received his quickening spirit into yourself, you realize it is his work in you that does the work.

Oh boy redneck overload for some.

These two statements don't seem congruent. Can you explain?

Jim Parker posted a Chopper Home Run in post # 8 Here it is....

(Love chooses others over self)

That statement is the greatest lifestyle that a true Christian can live. It captures the most wonderful fruit that Christ in us can produce.....Good one Jim. Bravo.

Can it not be both

It cannot be both. Either you do the work, or God does the work.

Isaiah 42:5-9
Thus says God, the LORD,
who created the heavens and stretched them out,
who spread out the earth and what comes from it,
who gives breath to the people on it
and spirit to those who walk in it:

I am the LORD; I have called you in righteousness;
I will take you by the hand and keep you;

I will give you as a covenant for the people,
a light for the nations,
to open the eyes that are blind,
to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon,
from the prison those who sit in darkness.

I am the LORD; that is my name;
my glory I give to no other,
nor my praise to carved idols.

Behold, the former things have come to pass,
and new things I now declare;
before they spring forth
I tell you of them.”

The reason we have to separate them is because God wants to work through us. God does not share control.

But wouldn't this mean that worship of God, acts of service, and loving kindness towards others is a result of a heart condition and not a duty or requirement.

Can it not be both
Let me see if can be a bit more clear ... Acts of loving kindness to others i would say most of us have started acts of kindness ... out of duty and ended up being done out of love.. that is His love.
example the old lady next door needs her grass mowed you are tired of looking at it... it is bringing the neighbour hood down so ya stomp over and mow it... some one is walking by and says thanks... you start to smile .. then old lady makes it to the door with tears to say thanks and your heart melts you thank the Lord for the lesson learned .. then your smile comes from your heart.

...and the scripture to go with it...

Psalm 37:3
Trust in the Lord, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.../

It cannot be both. Either you do the work, or God does the work.

God does the work of GRACE, We must do the work of living for Him.

God planned in His thoughtful reason how to pay the debt of sin. God carried out that plan and Jesus paid the debt on Calvary’s Cross. This is God’s Grace freely offered to all. I only have to accept God’s free gift and follow the plan. There are no works in my receiving God’s Grace. I accept it by Faith. BUT, this is where we fail to follow the plan.

Grace is THE STARTING POINT, not the Destination!!

THERE ARE WORKS IN LIVING FOR GOD!!
The sacrifice is being rejected by a sinful world because I am not part of this world. And rejecting natural self, I give my all to God.
The sacrifice is I die with Christ and share His Cross, I die to self, a bondslave to the Master.
The Promise is that I am risen in the Risen Christ.

The risen Savior Jesus is my King, my all in all and my promise, I will rise in Him when He Comes.

To live in myself, my will is to follow Satan’s counterfeit. Psalms says the Fool has said in his heart there is no God. But to make the sacrifice rejecting the world and the counterfeit is to die with Christ to share His Cross and die to self. A bondslave to Jesus not my will but always His.
The sacrifice of today, the part of the plan we fail to see and I fear practice is rejection of self and the world, to share in the cross. I belong to the King of Kings not to me. There ARE works in LIVING for God.

Hello my old friend, good to see you. Don't be such a stranger.
Love You,

I fully believe that we are not saved to just sit on our butts.

I would simply say, without diving into detail, that I would change your red statement to "there will be works in living for God".

Too often we think that God saves us through this miraculous work of His, then hands the keys over to us and says "now finish it".

But the bad tree would not cut the grass or thank God for learning a lesson.

And people who see good fruit never think "that's a might good branch to produce that good fruit". They see good fruit and say "that's a good tree". :)
Maybe if I could nail some good fruit to my branches I could get labeled as a good tree...Ya think ?
