The same area has a mountain range split between two continents and separated by the Atlantic ocean. Europe and Africa is moving away from the Americas by a few centimeters a year. If Columbus made the trip today, he's have to go about 5 meters farther.

So this trackway seems to have been right across the divergent boundary.

We can observe the seafloor of the Atlantic Ocean spreading apart at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Because the Earth's magnetic field shifts from time to time, we can determine how long ago any section of the seafloor solidified.
