one sad situation I saw. mother with no power to her apartment and yet as I walked by I smelled the pot being used. it might have been the eastern apartment doing that. but I don't think that is the case. I hope im wrong.Prayers for the doggy/druggy route for you....and prayers for Travis as well.
Gifford, wabasso and winter beach are sad chapters of local history. the usage drugs during the day is common and something we meter readers tell each other to be alert for. one of three homes that I know about that has that problem. not to mention the drunks at the stores at 7am waiting for them to open.Glad to hear you & Travis both were finished with the routes prior to noon.
Sorry am I to read about the woman without power to her apartment. Also about the pot smell. Unfortunately, some people make choices that are not the best for them.
compared to Chicago its nothing. there is some history that I have found that I can look up. already from a member in my church was told I was wrong on the assumption of the date of a building.the church is old (1924) but not the building where the plaque is on. there is a grave that has a lady who was born 1854 and died in 1936. I think that is the oldest I have seen here. that small cemetery isn't the oldest. the oldest is on an old route of mine. I cant go there easily. its in a gated community and only family can see that area. though when I read I could when im finished go there. its old and predates most of my county's cities. That truly is sad. I couldn't imagine living like that.
I don't walk over the graves. we don't have that bad of those here. the only place that might be is that one I mentioned with the marker but im sure since those were in a bad state of overgrowth for years, that the county did ensure that no one would be injured when they made a park out of that area. its not fenced in and the church next to it is placed there as that was its original location. I remember the hidden graves as a kid and would look for them. With those very old cemeteries, you have to be very careful where you walk. Many of those old wooden coffins have disintegrated, much to the surprising and horrifying dismay of the 'discoverers'.
I have more on Gifford if I can find it again from an old map from 1936. at that time I don't think many blacks lived there. I would have to ask. most blacks that I know tell me that back then in 40s they were forced to live on the beach. zoom in and you can see some docks. im not sure if they had blacks in those homes or not. it could be settlers that had them and remained there, a few cracker homes near that area still stand and those are all over Gifford as well.View attachment 6085 View attachment 6085Fascinating history, jasonc !
Illinois has quite the list of historical sites (homes, churches, etc) that honor those of the past.
I came across a couple of older books that identify & map out where former settlements, villages and towns were located in my state. Made for very interesting reading.
