Mice In My Kitchen

I did hear back from our own vet after a while. They think if he's not showing any symptoms yet, assuming it was early morning when he killed the thing, he'll probably be fine, keep an eye on him for the next 12 hours, etc. (I'm seriously considering staying up all night to do this, but not sure if I'll quite be able to make it. If I do, going to church tomorrow will be an ordeal. lol)

Told them to use the mousetrap thing, th1b.taylor . Also asked them to please put away the poison since it isn't working anyway. And if it did work, I'm worried one of them would still come down here and get caught by the cat. I don't want to tell them what to do, but I will be pretty mad if it kills my cat.
 
Sticky traps work well for me here in the Hawkeye state. A little cracker in the middle and they are done as soon as they stop.
 
Asked some more questions, they don't know what the poison was other than "it's d-con". See, we had renters--who are most thankfully gone now!--up there not too long ago. They were the ones who bought the poison. (It's their fault the mice are there, too. Messy, filthy people. Left garbage and food everywhere. And then complained at us when the mice came.)
I've seen the little container in the corner of the kitchen up there, based on that I think it's probably this:

And if it is, from my Google searching, seems that would make this brodifacoum.

They say it's been up there for the more than past month and the mice haven't touched it. I remember it being there on Christmas, when we all ate Christmas dinner up there. It didn't look like the mice were eating it at all, the pellets filled the tray to the brim.
I asked and according to my mom this is the only poison up there.

Okay apparently the mice have been gone for some time now. They closed them off in the attic and killed them off with poison up there. I wasn't told how any of that went.

Now they're talking about poisoning some squirrels in the attic and when I mention I'm worried how this will affect my cat I get called "stupid like one of those environmentalists".

That was very rude of them. Poison is, uh...poison. It almost goes without saying that it would be dangerous for the other animals too.

I used poison (D-CON) and it worked good. They get poisoned and start acting drunk...before they die. I hadda keep an eye on my dog though, he's a right good mouser and caught 5 of the little boogers.

They told me there's no way the squirrels will come downstairs and that's why they thought I was being stupid. Also that they can't have squirrels chewing on the wires and if I'd rather have that happen I'm stupid. ....which is kind of making assumptions since I never actually said that.

Yeah that's one of those minimum wagers. He knows how to work a spray bottle, and...not much else. That was a hard one to teach my son too. Being able to do the work is only half of it. Professionalism is the other half.

Yep. Especially with a dollop of food in the middle.

And, if ya wanna have a heart, they can be brought back out to a field and pour some olive oil on the sticky pad and they'll get off it, and hopefully not come back. We try not to kill them, but they are annoying. There are plenty of cats around us that need to be fed little olive oil snacks.
 
Oh, if the little mice weren't wild and likely ridden with parasites, I'd rather feed them to my cat. Teehee!

From what I've read, mice communicate and if they say for instance...come across something scary that they'll go back to the pack (?) And communicate this terror to them, and they'll move out...

Think loud noises, like a firework going off

Yes, but they are also incessantly nosey and curious. Specially if there are tasty morsels involved.

When I first started using the sticky pads they worked well. But after a short time, they get smart. Then you have to bait the traps. They can not resist food, no matter what the dangers are. But ya, pretty smart little critters. It breaks my heart to kill them. That's one of the reasons I switched to the sticky pads. Using the jaw snapping traps was leaving blood and body fluids. Yuck. And sometimes they'd just get a broken leg and be sitting there in the jaws, screaming. Just not nice.

I was helping a neighbor clean out his garage one day, and behind the fridge there was a sticky pad he forgot about. And there, standing erect, was a sticky pad with a little mouse skeleton, completely intact except for the flesh/fur parts. Just a nice little skeleton. What a slow death that must have been.

Even though I will be moving soon, I still have to fight these mice until I do, so I picked up a Rat Zapper at a flea market. And I am getting ready to try it.
