Might have to get a new smartphone--which one?

So, my company is likely going to put the axe to the BlackBerry phone plan very soon. That means I will need to have my own phone for the first time in over 3 years.

My short list has two phones--the Samsung Galaxy S III and the Nokia Lumina 920. The first one is Android based and the second is W8. I've compared both and both seem quite good, with a few differences other than OS.

The only reason I would consider an iPhone is that my wife has one, so the ability to communicate would be slightly better, if only just cheaper (FaceTime and iMessage). While at work it isn't an issue since I have my iPod Touch but if I were to ever travel...we would only be able to talk (if I couldn't get on wifi).:shocked! lol Apart from any other app or Skype, I suppose. But really, an iPhone is out of the question.

Anyone own one of the above or can recommend something different (smartphones only)?

I think I am actually set on getting a W8 phone, which means either the Lumina 920 or the Samsung Ativ S, whenever that comes out.

I'm rather fond of my droid (I have an older HTC Incredible). I like how open droid is and how easy it is to move data around. I too have been eyeballing the Galaxy SIII once this one keels over ...

Mega-dittos from the Wolverine State on that! Well be replacing our family phones this spring, and I'm looking good and hard at that Galaxy SIII.

Careful, if you stare at it too hard for too long it could possibly spontaneously combust.

My Nokia E6 (business QWERTY) plan runs out in January, so I'm in the same boat. I've got my iPod Touch, which I like except the new iOS 6 update is horrible. I like the MacBooks but I don't like the direction Apple is taking its smaller devices like the iPhone. I'm looking at getting an Android. Like Apple, the Android marketplace for apps is HUGE, although I'm guessing the Windows one is growing. I've always thought that the android and iOS systems are more secure than Windows Phone which is why I'm trying to stay away from getting a windows phone. I'm slowly moving away from Microsoft to Apple laptops or android phones.

The good thing about going android is there's a lot of phones that use them, but windows is still catching up there. For android, I really love the look of the tic-tac... I mean the Samsung Galaxy S III and the HTC One X.

My recommendation is android. :)

Have you done a full reset on it? When I first installed iOS 6, apps were crashing like crazy. I went online and saw that this was a common problem. Then my wife suggested I do a reset on it and it's worked fine since, even with the latest 6.0.1, other than being a little slow to open apps and less battery life. My guess is that with the upgrade it doesn't purge the memory when it is done, so it just piles up.

Same. They could have made the iPhone so much better but those Samsung ads with the "Apple" people waiting in line are actually quite accurate. In terms of features, Apple has always been behind. All they have going for them is a slick interface and a lot of apps. The map debacle and camera issues really show that Apple is struggling.

Apple will be the most secure because it is such a closed system but I don't think Android will be anymore secure than Windows Phone 8 and maybe even less since it is much more open, as I understand it.

I think business wise, WP8 is going to be a bit better.

Oh man this is so frustrating.l I was using the Brandomania app today and it kept crashing every five minutes! I think I'll do a reset, but I can't afford to have any less battery life :gah

Agreed. After seeing some amazing phones from Samsung, HTC and even Nokia, Apple might be losing some customers, including me. Definitely going to get a Macbook next year though. So sick of Windows.

I think Apple might need their Lord and Saviour Steve Jobs to rise again in three years to resurrect the company. :lol

I'm not so sure. Yes, Apple is very secure, but Linux is an open source project and it's possibly the most secure OS in the world. So Android's security may not be that bad, but Wndows - I don't want to have to buy virus protection software for my phone.

Most probably, but it depends on what business stuff you us it for. The whole of dad's work have iPhone 4S, but that works well because they're all on Apple phones.

As long as you don't get an iPhone 5 or a silly Nokia Symbian phone I don't think you can go too wrong with smartphones, IMO.

I had to send my iPod in a couple of months ago because the home button wasn't working well and almost stopped working altogether. Luckily I had purchased a 2-year extended warranty--which just ran out a week ago or so--and had it fixed for free. While they were in there they replaced the battery. :D Hopefully it'll keep going for a while longer. I hope the reset works for you.

I'm not a fan of Windows at all but the main program I use for work is only Windows based, so I'll be stuck with it for some time to come yet. I'm more curious than anything as to how WP8 will integrate with Windows 7, and Windows 8 on a PC should we upgrade at some point. Maybe I'm just a sucker for the underdog. Besides, I have my iPod for apps and as long as I can use the phone as a hotspot, I'm good to go. lol My wife did that for me once with her iPod.

Haha. Did they ever have problems quickly after he passed...

Wasn't it Android that had virus issues earlier this year or last? I'm sure Windows phones will have to get protection as some 16-your old kid in India already wrote malware that was able to infect W8 devices. Luckily for MS he was just testing and will show them what he discovered. For the life of me I cannot figure out why MS consistently has security issues.

I'm actually a little worried about this too and am considering a preemptive strike. lol The company is very small right now, smaller than when I started. The new president has an iPhone as do 3 contractors that are currently working for us. Plus my boss wants one. I'm afraid they'll try and make it so that everyone is on an iPhone for easier communication, although being that it would be a personal purchase, I would fight them on it.

I just wish they would make a decision on what they're doing with the BB's. I would rather not have to pay for a cellphone at this point but if I have to, tis the season to get good deals.

My phone has deleted all the contacts twice so far... I am in the market for a new one, too.

Sorry to hear :gah

One of my friends' phone constantly refuses to send or receive text messages. It's not a problem with the network, but her phone. Really bizzare.

I love the androids, especially the Samsungs. I have had my eye on the Samsung Galaxy S III myself. The droids can do more than the Apple products.

Plane Jane flip phone. No butt calls, no camera, no useful internet. One of those phones that doesn't even have a name to it, just an assignment of letters and numbers.

Like a TracPhone because it is prepaid, but it is with a major carrier.
