Military Academy Sports Report

Another BIG game this Saturday (October 23, 2010) will be Navy (4-2) vs. Notre Dame (4-3). Three years ago, Navy snapped the longest losing streak in NCAA history when they finally beat Notre Dame. Notre Dame won the next year, and Navy won last year.

The once-great Fighting Irish are struggling along, with Navy, in a sea of mediocre teams. With neither team receiving any ranking votes for a while, Notre Dame is unofficially ranked #41, while Navy is unofficially ranked #53. There's a lot of pride and honor involved in this match, Folks.

The Air Force football coach stated this week that this year's schedule is the roughest that the Falcons have ever played. Air Force has never beaten a team in the top five, but earlier this year they only lost by three points to #3 Oklahoma.

Army won't be playing this week-end, so let's take a look at the Citadel.

The Citadel? South Carolina's military college. Technically, the Citadel isn't a military academy, but it has produced many fine officers. They are 2-5 in football this year, including losing their last four games.

Years ago, they did get ranked occasionally, but this won't be one of those years.

Searching the sports sites for any glimmer of hope for Air Force to beat TCU tomorrow, I found, uh, uhm, ah, er, a glimmer.

Last year, TCU only beat Air Force by three points, and this year #3 Oklahoma only beat Air Force by three points. So, the Falcons have a decent chance of regaining their ranking. As to winning...

Navy beats Notre Dame again 35-17
By RALPH D. RUSSO, AP College Football Writer 3 minutes ago

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP)—Ricky Dobbs scored three touchdowns and Alexander Teich ran for 210 yards to lead Navy to its third victory against the Fighting Irish in the last four seasons, a 35-17 rout on Saturday at the New Meadowlands Stadium.

The 84-year old series, which Notre Dame (4-4) once owned like no other in college football history, now belongs to Navy (5-2).

In 2007, the Midshipmen snapped their NCAA record 43-game losing streak to Notre Dame with a 46-44 win in overtime at South Bend, Ind. Last year, Navy did it again, winning 23-21 at Notre Dame Stadium, the first of four straight losses that ended the Charlie Weis era.

These were the type of losses Notre Dame faithful figured would stop when Brian Kelly was hired as coach. Instead, it was the Irish’s most lopsided loss against Navy since 1963.

sniff

TCU scored first, and Air Force then scored almost immediately, making the first touchdown against TCU in four games. But after that, a hopelessly outclassed Air Force didn't have a chance.

The Falcons lost 38-7, actually playing well, but not fantasticly.

The rankings are out, and Navy is #34. Air Force and Army received no ranking votes.

Why Did Navy advance so far for beating another unranked team?

The Midshipmen ran for 367 yards, the most ever by Navy against Notre Dame, and Alexander Teich carried 26 times to become the first fullback in Navy history to rush for 200 in a game. This is the third Navy class in the history of the Academy to beat Notre Dame three times. It was Notre Dame's worst loss to Navy in 47 years.

A "fullback" is primarily used for blocking, receiving passes as a secondary task.

Like professional sports, college sports have a major league (the NCAA) and several minor leagues. There was an uproar a few years ago, when a ranked NCAA football team lost to a minor league team, because you cannot be ranked unless you are in the NCAA.

This coming Saturday, Army is playing Virginia Military Academy. Army (4-3) needs a blow-out, and they have a good chance of getting one. VMI (3-4) has not played an NCAA team all season.

CAN Army finish the year with any ranking votes? They will be playing both Navy and Air Force later, and heavy wins would certainly help them.

Let's look at Navy for this coming Saturday, October 30, 2010.

Navy (6-2, including winning their last four games) will be playing at home against Duke University. Duke won this year's opener, and then lost the next six in a row.

Surprisingly, the unofficial ranking site dropped Navy one place to #45. (The AP Poll, the only one I go by, ranked Navy #34 after their victory over Notre Dame last week). The owner has his own secret method of ranking teams, based only on the strength of their statistics, not their win-loss record. He has Duke ranked at 103.

If Navy plans to advance in the rankings this week-end, they're going to have to blow out this team.

"Seven" is the big number in this Saturday's match between Air Force and Utah. #7 Utah is now 7-0. In their last 7 games with Air Force, each game was won by 7 points or less.

But does Air Force have a chance? Well, if they play well, they could advance in the rankings. They learned last week that a first-class team can handle them, even though the Falcons are still #1 in rushing.

For the fourteenth time in fifteen games, Army beat Virginia Military Institute, 29-7. While VMI never had a chance, don't look for Army to get any ranking votes for beating a team that isn't even in the NCAAF.

Ouch! It's a painful loss for Navy, as Duke snaps a six-game losing streak to beat the Midshipmen 34-31. Trailing by 24 points in the fourth quarter, Navy showed what sailors are made of by scoring 24 points of their own, while Duke made a field goal.

Ricky Dobbs completed 13 of 27 passes for a career-high 227 yards and two TD passes. He also rushed for 83 yards in 22 carries and added a 2-point conversion. Dobbs is now Navy’s career scoring leader with 266 points and all-time touchdowns rushing leader with 44.

Air Force did it again. Sort of.

Trailing at one point by 17 points, the Falcons lost by five points to #8 Utah. The point is, Air Force might get some ranking votes. Despite five fumbles against one of the strongest defenses in the nation, the Falcons remain the #1 rushing team, even after playing three top ten teams this year.

Sorry, Military Fans, but no military team got any ranking votes today, October 31, 2010.

In the unofficial rankings, Air Force dropped from #37 to #40. Navy dropped from #54 to #62. Army dropped from #70 to #77.

We may not be ranked, but one of the military teams will win The Commander-in-Chief's Trophy. The three academies slug it out, and the winner gets the trophy.

Surprisingly, there are only two possible outcomes of the three games in which the academies play each other:

1) One team will win both games, and win the Trophy; one team will lose both games; and one team will be 1-1.
2) All three teams will be 1-1, and last year's winner gets to keep the trophy.

Work it out; there are no other possible outcomes.

Air Force has already beaten Navy, the current holder. They'll play Army this Saturday, and if the Falcons win, they'll get the Trophy. Army needs to beat both Air Force and Navy, and as the weakest of the three, that's unlikely. But Navy needs Army to beat Air Force this Saturday, and then Navy needs to beat Army. This will create a three-way tie, and Navy will get to keep the Trophy.

The Navy Midshipmen (5-3) are ranked #62 in the unofficial poll. They'll slug it out this Saturday with the East Carolina Pirates (5-3), who are ranked #44. Both teams play a total of twelve games, and if they win six, they are eligible for, and will probably receive, a bowl game.

With bowl pressure on, expect this to be a well-fought game by both teams.

Okay, okay, Coast Guard Academy is 2-6 in a minor league, with one game left to play this year.

BUT

It was announced today (November 4, 2010) that Senior defensive end Ryan Schmid was named to the 2010 ESPN Academic All-District I College Division Football first team. He has started every game this season at defensive end and has 35 tackles, 24 solo and leads the team with nine tackles for loss and four sacks.

Schmid, who has a 3.68 GPA as a Marine and Environmental Sciences major, is a member of the International Council, Ski Club and the Toastmasters Club. He has been on the Dean's List all six semesters and a was named to the New England Football Conference All-Academic team and the Commandant of Cadets List for the past two years.

November 6, 2010

For the first time since 2002, Air Force has won the Commander in Chief's Trophy, beating Army 42-22.

There was another moment of shame and glory: Army was the ONLY college football team in the nation that has not had a pass intercepted this year, and Air Force intercepted them.

NAVY BLASTS EAST CAROLINA OUT of THE WATER!

The 76-35 soaking was the most Navy has scored in a game since 1919, and the most points scored by anyone against East Carolina since 1932. Navy's 521 yards rushing is the second-most ever scored against the Pirates.

With the win, Navy qualified for a bowl game for the eighth straight season and will set sail for the Poinsettia Bowl against an opponent from the Mountain West Conference on Dec. 23. Yes, it could be Air Force, who earlier today won the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy.

It is the most points ever scored at the Pirates' Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. Oddly enough, it is the most points the Pirates have ever scored in their own stadium, even though they lost.

Navy received three ranking votes, making them #37 in the official poll. Air Force and Army received no ranking votes this week.
