Military Academy Sports Report

It's hard to take the unofficial poll seriously, but here goes:

Despite beating Army, Air Force dropped from #38 to #39.

Despite beating the daylights out of a team that was higher-ranked by this poll, Navy dropped from 43 to 49. This is despite the fact that Navy got some ranking votes from the official poll.

Army dropped from #72 to #81.

Folks, anybody can come up with his own secret formula for ranking teams. Over the last several weeks, I have seen several teams that I follow beat teams that this poll gave a better ranking to. But dropping Navy 6 places after it clobbered a higher-ranked team was the last straw. This fellow doesn't know what he's talking about, and this is the last time I report his poll results.

It was a humdinger of a game, with both teams setting a variety of records. But the Coast Guard Bears still got clobbered in a wild free-for-all "shoot-out."

(11/6/10)--Maine Maritime rushed for 619 yards as the Mariners won their third straight New England Football Conference (NEFC) Bogan Division championship by beating Coast Guard in a shootout 63-47.

The game featured eight touchdowns in the fourth quarter, five by Coast Guard and 1,217 yards of total offense.

Coast Guard finished with 549 total yards, 263 rushing and 286 passing, all three season highs for the Bears.

Coast Guard lost its fifth straight to finish 2-7 overall and 1-6 in the division.

Coast Guard freshman Tyler Hames, making his first career start, became the first Coast Guard player to run for over 100 yards this season. Hames carried ten times for 143 yards and scored the first two touchdowns of his career.

Junior Jarrod Owens, who made a few starts at running back this season, made his first career start at quarterback and completed 20 of 28 passes for a career-high 286 yards with his first two touchdown passes of the year. He also rushed for 65 yards and a score to finish with 351 yards of total offense.

It's the end of the year for the Coast Guard football team, as this was their last game until 2011. I have noticed that the Bears are an overall weak team, but they have a small number of outstanding players.

Last Saturday, the New Mexico Lobos won their first game of the year, by three points. They'll be playing Air Force this Saturday, and even an Air Force blow-out won't get the Falcons any ranking votes.

It's a bad time for Navy to be playing the Central Michigan Chippewas. The Chippewas' victory last week-end made them 3-7, and even with a Navy blow-out, it will be hard for the Midshipmen to get ranked.

Do you want to hear the good news?

All three academies won today (November13,2010).

Do you want to hear the bad news? Don't even dream that any of them will get ranked tomorrow.

Do you want to hear the good news? All three of them are bowl eligible.

The hapless Kent State Golden Flashes fell 45 to 28, and Army is now eligible for a bowl game for the first time in 14 years. And with Kent State leading the nation in rushing defense, Army's victory will probably get them to the Armed Forces Bowl.

Navy's one-point victory over Eastern Michigan won't help the Midshipmen increase their ranking votes, but it did clinch their eighth winning season in a row. Both teams played poor defense.

Talk about hapless, the New Mexico Lobos practically owned last place in the NCAAF before winning their first game last week. Air Force's 48-23 victory isn't anything to get excited about. It isn't official, but the Falcons could be going to the Independence Bowl.

Time to check in on the Citadel Bulldogs. Not really a military academy, the Citadel is a South Carolinian military institute, whose graduates can receive an officer's commission if they take certain courses.

I'm afraid that they are only 2-8 in a minor football league

This Thursday night (Novemeber 18, 2010) the Falcons (7-4) will play their last regular season game against the University of Las Vegas Rebels (2-8). Despite winning their second game just last week, the Rebels just don't supply the opportunity for any ranking votes.

This Saturday, Army will play the team I love to hate: Notre Dame. After leading his team to their first Sugar Bowl last year, Coach Brian Kelly deserted them for Notre Dame, so he's a man I like to see get defeated.

Last Saturday, the Fighting Irish pounded their first ranked team since 2006, but still received no ranking votes. And on the same day, the Black Knights beat the team with the #1 rushing defense in the nation. With the season nearing its end, both teams are struggling for a good bowl game, and motivation ought to be high.

When Navy (7-3) goes against Arkansas State (4-6), this Saturday, November 20, 2010, Navy will have a lot of potential records on the line.

• Quarterback Ricky Dobbs has 45-career rushing touchdowns and is tied for eighth with Missouri's Brad Smith for most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in NCAA history. He needs just two rushing touchdowns to set the NCAA record for most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in back-to back years.

• A win would give Navy at least eight wins for the eighth-straight season and would give head coach Ken Niumatalolo his 26th win, the most wins in school history by a Navy coach in his first three seasons.

• This Saturday is "Senior Day," when Navy honors the seniors on the football team. "Senior Day" is always held at the last home game. Navy has won seven-straight games on senior day. The Mids last lost the home finale in 2002, 38-0 to Connecticut.

• If Navy can beat Arkansas State, Army and win the bowl game the Mids will tie the school record for wins with 10 and it will mark the first time in school history that Navy has won 10 games in back-to-back seasons. The senior class would also tie the Class of 1919 for the the school record for wins with 36.

Folks, I'm not expecting any ranking votes, but Navy has a lot of pride riding on a victory this Saturday.

Last night, Thursday, November 18, 2010, Air Force closed its regular season with a 35-20 victory over University of Las Vegas. It was the twentieth game in a row in which the Falcons scored a rushing touchdown (the quarterback ran the goal across the goal line by himself).

The Falcons (12-4) are expected to get their fourth straight bowl bid, and they're hoping for a good one.

It's Saturday, November 20, 2010.

No surprise today as Navy beats Arkansas State 35-19. BUT, we're proud of quarterback Ricky Dobbs, who set an NCAA record today when he rushed for his fortieth touchdown in two years.

This is now the eighth year in a row that Navy has had eight wins. With one more regular game, plus a bowl game, left, Navy hopes to win 10 games a year, two years in a row, the first time in their history.

AND, it was the first time this year that Arkansas State has scored less than 24 points. And with three sacks, their most in four years, Navy just MIGHT get some ranking votes tomorrow.

Nooooooooo!

For the fourteenth time in a row, Notre Dame has beaten Army. The Black Knights received the first kick-off and made a field goal, but they never scored again.

The New Yankee Stadium had the largest attendance in its two-year history, with a lot of ND alumni filling the stands.

Oh, the pain, the pain, the pain!

Hoist the mainsails, Lads! Navy got seven ranking votes today, November 21, 2010!

The Midshipmen came in #30 in the official poll!

I'll be scraping the barrel for news for a while, Folks. Air Force won't be playing again until the Bowl games start. Army and Navy have only one game left: the great Army-Navy classic. But that won't be until Saturday, December 11.

A military spokesman has confirmed that after the season is over, some of the Air Force players will have to lose weight so they can fit inside the pilot's seat. No, it is not a joke.

They didn't play yesterday, but Navy is #30 in the official poll and Air Force is #34!

The Citadel, South Carolina's military academy, finished their minor-league season with a 3-8 record, winning their last game by one point.

Virginia Military Institute also finished their season with a 3-8 record.

Both schools offer high academics and good discipline, producing good military officers for our nation. We hope they do better next year.

DALLAS (AP)—Army is headed to its first bowl game in 14 years.

The Black Knights on Tuesday accepted an invitation to the Armed Forces Bowl in Dallas. Army had an agreement to play in the game if it was bowl eligible before the regular season finale against Navy and either Conference USA or the Mountain West couldn’t fill their allotments.

Army (6-5) will play a C-USA team Dec. 30 at SMU’s Ford Stadium.

The last postseason bid for Army was the Independence Bowl in 1996, the last winning season for the Black Knights. They started that year 9-0 and wound up 10-2 after losing to Auburn 32-29 in Shreveport, La.

The road back to the postseason has been difficult. Army has won more than three games just five times in the past 14 seasons, including both years under coach Rich Ellerson. The Black Knights had a rare 13-loss season in 2003, when they were mired in a 17-game losing streak.

Before the bowl game, though, is the annual Army-Navy game on Dec. 11 in Philadelphia. The Midshipmen (9-3) are headed to the Poinsettia Bowl on Dec. 23 in San Diego, their eighth straight bowl appearance.

Army has gone to a total of five bowl game in its history. True, there was a time that the Black Knights were the best team in the nation. After all, they did win three consecutive National Championships between 1944 and 1946. The Army-Notre Dame rivalry was once the best in college football.

But the Black Knights have fallen on hard times since then. Army has lately found itself in the shadow of Navy and Air Force.

Army is dead last in passing yards, averaging a mere 77.8 yards a game, so they've got things done primarily the old fashioned way: on the ground.

The Black Knight have yet to beat a team with a winning record this year, but they'll get one more chance during the regular season as they take on fellow service academy Navy

December 5, 2010

Neither team played this week-end, but Navy is #29 and Air Force is #37 in the rankings.
