Military Academy Sports Report

Air Force (8-4) will be playing Georgia Tech (6-6) in the Independence Bowl on December 27. I'm disappointed here, Folks. Even if the Falcons win a smashing blow-out, they will have a hard time finishing the year ranked.

On the other hand, the Yellow Jackets are #1 in the nation in rushing yards, while the Falcons are #2. That should motivate both teams to strive hard to be #1.

Two days to go before the greatest rivalry in the history of college football! The Army-Navy game is scheduled for December 11, 2010.

Navy leads the series, 54-49, with 7 ties. It was the first game to use "instant replay." 1963, 1996, and 2010 are the last three times that both teams have entered the game with winning records.

Beginning in 1890, the game is normally played at a neutral field in Philadelphia. And I remember in the 1960's when the winner of the game was announced in the headlines of our daily newspaper.

This year? Navy is the heavy favorite.

Me? My dad served in the Navy in WW2, and I always root for them against Army.

Navy beats Army for ninth straight time, 31-17 December 11, 2010

In a game full of fumbles but otherwise good playing, The Midshipmen beat the Black Knights once again. At one point, Army had a first down three yards from the goal line when they fumbled, and a Navy player made the longest fumble return in Navy history when he scored.

Few teams played this week, and the regular season is over. All three academies are heading to bowl games.

There are no new rankings, since the Arm-Navy game was the only game played this week-end.

On Thursday, December 23, Navy (9-3) will play San Diego State (8-4) in the Poinsettia Bowl. For the Aztecs, it's the first bowl game in twelve years. And they haven't won a bowl game since 1969.

Do you remember when #23 Air Force lost their ranking earlier this year? That was the day that San Diego State beat them by two points.

Navy is the favorite, but it looks like a close game.

On Thursday, December 30, 2010, Army (6-6) will play Southern Methodist University (7-6) in the Armed Forces Bowl.

The game has already sold out. Earlier this year, the Mustangs were beating Navy 14-0 at half time, before losing 28-21. Last year, SMU played and won its first bowl game in a quarter of a century. They'll also have home field advantage, as the game is being played in their Gerald J Ford Stadium.

Too close to call, but SMU is a SLIGHT favorite at this time.

The Marines have a joke.

Why doesn't the Marine Corps have a football team, like the Army, Navy, and Air Force?

Because the Marine Corps protects everybody, not just the quarterback.

Folks, I lost track of the schedule. Two days ago, San Diego State sank Navy in the Poinsettia Bowl 35-14. The Aztecs set the bowl rushing record, which had formerly been held by Navy.

San Diego hasn't won a bowl game since 1969, and they have lost three bowl games since.

The Poinsettia Bowl is only six years old, and it is Navy's third appearance. To put it bluntly, it was a disaster. I see no chance at all of Navy getting any ranking votes.

I'm proud of Navy, which gave us a good season, and I'm looking forward to next year.

And Merry Christmas to the small but loyal band who've been following this thread.

December 27, 2010.

Air Force Academy has beaten Georgia Tech 14-7 in the Independence Bowl. The two teams entered the game with the two highest rushing records in the nation, but both were held below their average. And with Georgia Tech's top quarterback out with a broken arm, three players removed for academic ineligibility, and three more players suspended from the first half for a curfew violation, don't look for Air Force to pile up many ranking votes. The fact that both teams made several errors won't help any.

It was the Yellow Jackets' sixth consecutive bowl loss, and their first losing season in fourteen years.

December 30, 2010

A quarter of a century ago, Army won a bowl game. Today they did it again.

Army was leading SMU 16-0 at half time, and then held on to win 16-14 after SMU missed a field goal. The play of the game occurred when Army ran fifty-five yards for a touchdown. Now 7-6, Army has finished its first winning season since 1996.

It's all over for the military this season. I want to thank the people who followed this thread, and I'll see you next year.

Whoops! With the bowl games over, the final rankings are out. While only the top 25 teams are "ranked," Air Force came in #32, and Navy came in #33. Army did not get any ranking votes.

I'd like to ask: Who are you people who followed this thread? Are you moderators who are required to read the posts, or are there any football fans out there? Was the thread any good? Is it worth doing again next year? All courteous responses, pro and con, are appreciated.
