MMOs

Anyone involved in any MMOs (Massive Multiplayer Online games)? I have recently been spending a little bit of time in the Star Wars: The Old Republic MMORPG, which really has done a nice job in allowing people to play for free (I wouldn't be playing it otherwise :wink). I have played a few others but nothing that has grabbed my attention as this one does.

I played SWTOR quite a bit, but then got into a good deal of the game and had to subscribe so I could go beyond Level 20. Then my work schedule increased and I just couldn't justify paying $15 a month for something I might get to play maybe 6 hours a month.

I've heard pretty good things about Star Trek Online (which I think is also free-to-play), but haven't had time to check it out.

If you don't have a Steam account, I encourage you to get one. They've got a list of nearly 100 free games that they host. Definitely worth checking out.

I am not sure when you played last, but you no longer have to subscribe passed level 20. I have a smuggler that has reached that and I haven't gotten notification of any subscription requirement.

I played Lord of the Rings Online for a while but I just didn't have the time to play it enough. The thing I appreciated about it was that there wasn't as much grinding and more of a focus on completing quests. It gave something to do while exploring the beautiful world.

Three years of World of Warcraft.
My main character was an undead warlock, and I spent most of my time doing PvP and trying to kill older content raid bosses on my own. I was totally immersed into the game and could have probably answered any question about gameplay or background story.

There are probably other good MMO's (I heard Rift is pretty good and going free to play, too) but I suspect most of them are time consuming if you want to be good, and even worse, they absorb your mind (I remember even when I wasn't playing I was thinking about WoW almost every waking moment during those 3 years. It was a very bad addiction.) So that's something I hopefully never get into again.

There are enough side quests in Star Wars to keep you a little distracted from your main quest, at least for me, so I don't really get sucked in. Plus the game play is rather simple, even as a Jedi.

Also, I have extremely limited time to play, so that helps.

It's been about 6 months. I'll have to check into my account when I get home. Thanks for the heads up!

Disclaimer: I am currently not playing that character cuz my kids wanted to watch me playing a Jedi character, so I am not completely sure of this. I hope this is true, because I would like to play beyond level 20, but really do not want to have to pay for it.

Maybe there are private servers somewhere out there?

I have four SWTOR characters greater than level 20 and still free. The game does reduce the experience gained after level 20 unless you subscribe, so it is good to save the experience boost bonuses at least until you reach that level.

Thanks Spockrates for the followup. I was considering firing up my smuggler again just to prove the theory, and because my Jedi character has kind of hit a wall. Somehow I lost my companion and all of the areas I need to go into now require more than one person to be successful.

Glad 2 help. Have you tried selecting the Crew Skills icon or bringing up the Crew Skills dialog box by pressing the N key on your keyboard? The dialog box can be used to summon your companions.

I will have to look again, and I think I tried to find this the last time I was logged in but couldn't. I had a droid and another Jedi I was able to use as companions up until the last major plot point in my main quest. After that part was over the other Jedi just disappeared and I couldn't figure out how to get her or the droid back.

I will have to check it out this weekend.

If you are on the first planet, the same happened to my Jedi Knight. I later found out it is part of the story line. You temporarily lose your followers until you progress in the main quest line far enough.

You are then required to take the droid on a quest. After that quest is completed, you may choose the girl padiwan or the droid as you follower at any time after you leave the planet (she becomes your padiwan after you become a Jedi).

Interesting, yet bad news as I am supposed to go into the Jedi Temple to go find the Sith who has the Planet Prison, and I keep getting my head handed to me, since I am by myself. Usually in other areas I can kind of wait around for other players to come by and help clear out some stuff, but not so much in the Temple.

Yeah, I've read about that happening. There have been several new patches, recently. Might have fixed the issue 4 U. Also try choosing a crew skill at the Republic Fleet and then see if you can summon your companion that way. By the time U get 2 the 3rd planet, you should have three companions to choose from. Or if you did not complete a required quest, you may use your ship to travel back to the first planet.

Yeah, I should have taken the time to do that. When I made the Jedi character I kind of sped through some things.

Have you played anything other than a Jedi?

My smuggler is currently on Taris. I think I am almost done on that world. Just a few more quests to wrap up.

I think my younger brother was actually one of the beta testers for Star Wars: The Old Republic a few years ago...or some Star Wars online game, anyway.

I personally have never played in one. Probably shouldn't, I have enough media addictions as it is. xD

Also, let me know what server your Jedi is on. Maybe we may team up long enough to get U through the quest?
I will look the next time I am online. Is that shown on the initial character screen, or somewhere else?
