Are statins safe?

http://www.setyoufreenews.com/2012/...ons-are-tricked-into-ingesting-harmful-pills/

I think the article summarized it well:

We’ve grown so accustomed to making bad health choices and them fixing them with a pill that many people don’t realize the wonderous, self-maintaining, and naturally healthy thing that their body is. But, it all starts with proper nutrition.
Of course the pharmaceutical companies will add the disclaimer ALL THE TIME "when diet and exercise don't help, you need...."

No, you DON'T need it. If you are truly healthy, then maybe "high" cholesterol is normal for you, which if you noticed over the years they've been dummying down the numbers tremendously so that nobody makes the grade and everyone "needs" drugs to "prevent" heart disease. I already stated many times this does not cut the risk one iota. The Vytorin flop and resulting lawsuits proven beyond a doubt that lowering cholesterol does not stop such ills, so why take them? Isn't that the supposed reason to begin with? It used to be 300 total was still acceptable. I don't know of too many people above that.

But the thing that irritates me the most is many people will nod their head and admit to what I am saying makes sense. Then, they turn around, go home and take their cholesterol pills anyway. I can see why in the Bible the Lord hated apathy. It's the most insidious, yet passive form of unbelief.

Hello Tim,
I am a very active and physically fit 47 year old. My work in the past has required great physical strength and stamina (roughnecking on oil rigs, lobster fishing underground drilling) I was also a state and national level full contact martial artist so fitness has been part of my entire life.
Nowadays I workout 5-6 days per week to stay fit and in shape and for the relaxation it provides.
3 years ago I suffered a heart attack (44 years old) due to a clogged artery (apalling diet choices) and when they tried to put in a stent it punched a hole through the wall of said artery due to"brittle vein" syndrome ( I read that as the doc mucked up and pushed too hard lol)
Since then I have been on various meds to reduce the risk of another episode.
However, over the last few months as i've increased my workout intensity and reprogrammed my diet, but most importantly further strengthening my faith in our Lord, I have stopped taking the medications cold turkey. It's now been 18 days and after a month i'm going back to my cardiologist to have a full set of blood work done to assess my status. I'll post the results here so people can see if it makes a difference or not.
I have full faith in my Lord that I will be fine for a long time yet as he leads me to His work and will.

(As a footnote, I'm a freelance health and fitness writer with over 150 articles published online and in printed media. I am currently writing articles for a Christian Health and fitness blog that I have started which will go live next week)

Hi Paul:

Sorry to hear of your ordeal, but it sounds like you are getting back on the right track. What were your "appalling food choices" if I may ask? Just too many processed foods I assume?

Some people also like to be more active than others. I'm not one of them, as I consider adequate exercise just normal physical work especially in the outdoor summer sun. I'm not the type to literally run in circles. The body has resource enhancers and resource depleters. Kind of like charging and discharging a battery. Sorry to say, but exercise is a depleter of resources unless one is properly nourished. The idea of exercise is to place stress on a certain area of the body (e.g. aerobic exercise) and when one replenishes it with the proper nutrients, it builds the stressed area strong. So it's not the exercise, per se, but the rebuilding from the nutrition to the area stressed by the exercise. What I am saying is that exercising a poorly fed body multiplies the degradation rate and exercise does not make one "healthier". In fact, worse off.

And to prove my point, I'll bet you were the health award's poster man being physically fit as you were, and look what happened. It only proves what I am saying. I am not saying to settle down and do no exercise. I am saying there was probably an area of health in your life you were lacking, and the fitness routines gave the false assumption everything was OK. I hope you find out what was the cause and contributing factors to your health problems.:yes

Statins just scare me because they're supposedly "life saving," but the data is lacking. Kind of like SSRI drugs were "life saving," until more objective data came in. Oops.

They apparently lower CoQ10 levels in the body significantly. That's frightening, and the alternative health people say it explains many of the side effects from statins. I read that sufficiently high (grams upon grams) of oral C, plus dietary modification, can not only change the markers statins are used to alter, they can also improve health. And they're cheap.

The way modern medicine seems to go, I think we'll keep hearing about how wonderful statins are...until the next big thing comes out. Then we'll hear about all the evil, terrible side effects of those "dirty" old drugs, and we'll be bombarded with ads about the wonderful, "clean" new drugs.

Keep in mind that statins also raise blood sugar, so they put you at higher risk for diabetes... trust me on this one. :bigfrown

does the drug-induced metabolic stuff go away? I know with zyprexa--a newer, "atypical" antipsychotic--sometimes it won't go away. Ever. Even after the drug is discontinued.

Hello all, i'm sorry it's taken me so long to reply, work, work, work, makes Pauly boy very dull.
Tim i'll Try to be brief in my answers.
Just too many processed foods I assume?
Yes, unfortunately life at sea and on the rigs does not allow you to prepare your own meals. Similarly, here in LOS, much of the food is cooked in Palm oil etc. Now back to the same regimen i used when competing in martial arts.

I hope you find out what was the cause and contributing factors to your health problems.:yes
Dad: Premature death due to diabetes, coronary disease.
Mum: insulin dependent diabetic, coronary heart disease.
Brother: Insulin dependent diabetic.
Me: 10 cups coffee a day at sea, excess alcohol consumption, processed foods, SMOKER.

Caffeine leaches calcium from your body and it gets flushed out as waste, weakening bones and tissue, ESPECIALLY blood vessels. (got into the habit from fighting, used as diuretic to drop weight quickly before fights)
Alcohol and SMOKING, well we all know that's a No-brainer. (Coming up on 100 days absolutely Alcohol free) Please don't ask about the cigs :sad

You're right about the importance of nutrition in relation to physical fitness. It's something I had always prided myself on (pride before the fall). But as life went on,I really let it go.
As for work Vs exercise, On the rigs, I would sometimes do a casing run (Pipe after pipe after pipe being pushed pulled, lifted) for an entire 12 hour shift...then after shift hit the gym or do laps of the helipad for an hour before a feed and bed. i've since worked it out that on most days work alone, accounted for a 650-1000 calorie burn. The food available tasted ok but was mainly carb based with protein in the form of processed meats etc.
Some of us like Tim and i are blessed in that we live in the country with gardening / farming activities to help our physical well being. However as a fitness writer and (Nearly) qualified personal trainer, I believe all exercise is good for you if done sensibly But again agree with Tim, only if you eat correctly to nourish growth and maintenance of your body.

I'm not allowed to post it yet as I'm a newbie, but I'm currently developing a Blog site, purely for Christian Fitness encompassing physical, dietary, mental and spiritual sides to help people in their walk with Christ. I will also be posting my full story (if anyone's interested that is) about my fall from peak physical condition to returning to physical fitness AS GOD INTENDED, NATURALLY with no steroids, pills, etc. Just healthy food as He intended it to be and good old fashioned exercise.

Blessings in Christ
Paul

PS: I'm at day 28 medication free, and feel fine. Will be making an appointment for next week to have my blood work done and will post the results here along with my last set of bloods while on medication ( tests done 8 months ago)
