... Even the cannon of scripture and why certain material was accepted and certain material was rejected could enter in. All good topics of theological debate and apologetics.
Obadiah,
This brief summary might be helpful, and also encourage Christians to ignore all the heretical writings which came into existence:
The canon of New Testament Scripture (authoritative inspired writings of the evangelists and apostles) had begun to be established and accepted even while the apostles were alive (A.D. 40 to A.D. 90).
Peter confirmed (2 Pet 3:15-16) that all of Paul’s epistles were Scripture and at the same level of authority as the
Tanach (Hebrew Old Testament), which was already established as inspired and authoritative at the time of Christ’s ministry on earth. Peter also claimed Divine authority for his own epistles (2 Pet 1:15-21). Paul recognized the Gospel of Luke as Scripture and quoted it in 1 Tim 5:18, and the Gospel of John in 1 Tim 6:13.
The earliest list of canonical books is found in the
Muratori (or Muratorion)
Canon, written in Greek, which is dated from before A.D. 200, and discussed in the
New Testament Apocrypha (1963), edited by Henneke and Schneemelcher. All the canonical books of the New Testament are listed herein (although the fragment containing Matthew and Mark is missing) other than the 3rd epistle of John. The Muratori Canon condemns the
Epistle to the Laodiceans and the
Epistle to the Alexandrians as forgeries, perpetrated by Marcion’s heretical Gnostic sect.
The
New Testament Apocrypha primarily discusses a multitude of so-called “lost” Gospels and writings (one of which has come to the attention of the liberal media recently). The heretical writings were not "lost" but were already recognized as heretical and discarded by Christians. Irenaeus in the 2nd century wrote
Adversus Haeresis (Against Heresies) in which he exposed the heresies prevalent at his time. He also quoted from almost all the canonical books which are listed in the Muratori Canon. Regarding the Gospels, he said:
“The Gospels could not possibly be either more or less in number than they are".
There are at least 60 Gnostic heretical writings (many of them called "gospels")which are worthless and should be simply ignored. God has ensured through Divine Providence that we have the genuine Scriptures in our hands. Hence the Old Testament Apocrypha should also simply be ignored. The 66 books of the Bible are all we need for life and godliness.
