The how and the why of our state of both sin and faith are in God's hands. So instead lets just simplify it to what God has given us and put into our own responsibility.
Here is what He says over and over again.
1) Turn from your sins, repent, and turn to God. So that He might heal you and save you.
2) it is by faith that we are saved not by works. This shows the difference between a faithful man who acts on his faith compared to a Pharisee who praise themselves and look the part, but their faith is not really there. To make this point clearer Jesus compared a repentant sinner who in his sorrow stayed in the back of the temple and kept his eyes on the ground, to a confident Pharisee who did all the right things. And in his confidance or arrogance thanked God that he was not like that sinner in the back (apparently his reputation proceeded him). But Jesus said that the repentant sinner was the one sanctified before God not the Pharisee.
The how and why we are saved and remain in God's protection is in His hands more then they are in our own. Because Jesus also said to His desciples that could not come to Him unless the Father brought them to Jesus. But what is in our hands our ability is to 1) repent and turn to God. And 2) have faith in God and believe in Jesus who God sent.
I don't think the order of which comes first matters. Repentance and following the comands, or faith and reliance and the LORD. They both are what we do to come to Him and are both what we are called to do.
I'm sorry
tdidymas and
JLB, but you both seem to be arguing over the order that we are suppose to do things, have faith or follow God, and which one is needed to be saved. Instead of acknowledging that the bible calls for us to do both. I'm sure both of you are as aware as I am of people who have found God by first believing in Him and having faith in Him, though they were sinning and had no direction to get better; as well as aware of people who by following God's teachings and "trying them out," they were saved to then come to believe in God and seek Him. Or their faith grew because it was weak before and they were unsure, on the fence of the Christianity they were raised with. I've heard of testimonies for both. Surely so have you.
