Hello Lovely~ (Such a sweet name for a God-kid~ ya musta been loved well, eh?)

Lovely said; The older movies, some that have been listed here, and others like 'Where the Red Fern Grows', and 'Sargent York' are nice to watch occasionally. I always liked the movie, 'The Quiet Man'...guy and girl movie all rolled in one. My daughter Arianna (6) loves the movies, 'The Sound of Music' and 'Fiddler On The Roof'. Thankfully I do not usually get songs stuck in my head or these would be difficult to watch so often. When we visit my dad we usually watch, 'How It's Made'...we love that show.

I am with you dear girl on these vintage flicks, they are inspiring, not a word I would use for anything they make today. I love "The Quiet Man" an all time favorite. The Charlie Brown movies are precious too, especially the Christmas one. I did get the songs to the musicals you listed stuck in my head along with about a dozen more while growing up, fraid the music and lyrics are still intact. Let's say I'm a hummer. :smt020

Vic said; My guilty pleasure is science fiction/fantasy, so I did make exceptions for the movies you mentioned above. I also like the "Terminator" movies and am looking forward to the return of "Terminator; The Sarah Connors Chronicles". He es back!

The "Planet of the Apes" movies were cool too.

But I do have my sappy side. I enjoy many shows found on PBS; the cooking shows, the This Old House shows, History Detectives, Globe Trekker and shows like them.

... and speaking of "Trek"...
Ooouuu You mean as in Trekkie?

I got a movie fer ya Vic~ It's called "Vantage Point", excellent car stunts, and a reel to reel edge of your seat action movie too! It has some language and it is violent (but if Terminator is cool this one is far less cool) What I liked was it also includes an interesting moral regarding relative truth. There are few NEW films I will see, this one had a good theme.

Lord Bless us, nite all :smt015 bonnie

Hi Bonnie,

Yes, I had a great dad, and I met Jesus when I was very little...I was loved extremely well by them both. :D

The Lord bless you today.

For me it's subject matter. What is acceptable depends on what is being portrayed.

Fight Club is a movie that is brutally violent and contains some sex and nudity. While the latter I could do without, the former really helps bring out the movie. The violence really draws you in, I feel, and helps you understand the despair and angst that the characters feel. You leave the movie feeling quite enlightened as to what it really means to be seperated from God, and when you look out on the world and see the drug lords and the prostitutes and the people drinking themselves into oblivion, you've suddenly got an increased capacity to empathize with them. The movie, despite its violence, sex, and language, gives you a window into the life of the unredeemed who has been trampled by the culture around them, and you'll never look at them the same way again.

Of course this isn't always the ultimate decider. For example, as far as I understand it, American Psycho is a film depicting a wealthy upper-class American who has become so desensitized by the shallowness and superficiality of the yuppie culture around him that he rapes, murders and tortures those around him, even relatives. While I think most Christians would agree with the premise, that the ultimate response to unbridled materialism is sociopathy, I would never watch the movie.

I just LOVE your testimony . . . it is as tender as the lovingkindness of our Lord.

Here is a lovely poem that tells of the love of God in us and to us and through us I thought it might bless you.

I LOVE MY GOD

I love my God, but with no love of mine,
For I have none to give;
I love thee Lord; but all the love is Thine,
For by Thy life I live.
I am nothing, and rejoice to be
Emptied and lost, and swallowed up in Thee.

Thou, Lord, alone, art all Thy children need;
And there is none beside;
From Thee the streams of blessedness proceed
In Thee the blest abide~
Fountain of life, and all-abounding grace,
Our source, our center, our dwelling place. (Jeanne Marie De La Motte-Guyon 1648-1717)

In Jesus ~ bonnie

Bonnie, thank you so much...that was a blessing. Simple, honest, and beautiful. Her words said exactly what's in the heart of every believer. The Lord bless you today.

Yep, but wiser because of what we watch. haha!.

To lovely and destiny, encouraging and helpful to hear from you. And I agree you are wiser in not watching that stuff think I am slowly learning that lesson.

Its a hard one for on one hand I love movies and it used to be just one or two that were dodgy but could still all the main ones now it is different. I want to be relevant and to be able to meet people where they are and know what is going on to relate it to Christianity. But i don't want to compromise and I think of Psalm 101 v 3 "I will set before my eyes no vile thing" actually the whole Psalm!

So it's a big thing with me but if I am always mindful then hopefully I will make the right decisions when I turn on the TV or make the choice in what movie I go to.

Not having an older mature Christian women in my life to learn from, as it says in the scripture (except my mum and my prayer warrior elderly Aunt who teaches me daily what a prayer warrior is and how effective prayer is but they are both far away). I look to and appreciate Godly women when I come across them and seek to learn from them by example and encouragement. So thank you and "Lovely" warms me to hear of your testimony will look out for you from now on :fadein:

I think we need to be careful of what we put into our minds. I avoid movies that say there is nudity and sexuality that is over the top. Innuendo does not bother me. I also try to avoid movies with over the top in cussing. I do not hold others to this same standard. This is for me, what I feel I need to do. I used to go to movies and never thought twice about what was going to be in it. I now take more time in figuring out what I am putting my money into.

Ginger, then you are far, far wiser, and probably more mindful of pleasing God, than I was as a younger woman. I did not seek out encouragement from older women at that time, and though I was respectful and would learn some, I didn't understand the value that Scripture placed on a Godly woman's example. I know a few who probably shook their heads at my stubborn-ness, but loved and prayed for me anyway. :wink: Praise God, you have your mom and aunt in relationship with you, praying for you, but I know having someone present is what we desire...I guess the Lord knows best, though. I have one daughter, and I desire to be that older woman for her, and I am trying to show her now, while she is young, what the Lord says about it. I pray that I always have her heart.

I thought your OP question was thoughtful, and I know that Psalm...it has come to my mind, to convict me, many times when I have seen something and regretted it later, too bad It wasn't beforehand in those instances. God, in His mercy, has purified my mind again...and much has been forgotten from my younger, more foolish, days. It wasn't until I had a child that I began to fully grasp the benefit of protecting my own eyes...only after I had a desire to protect theirs! UGH! I know, it's dense, but I really understood for the first time that Jesus really does want us to behold Him first, and His glory, so that we can follow His example. I have a greater degree of Godly fear now than I did back then. Though, I will say, that I naturally do not care for some things, never have, and I think God just protected me, my eyes, in my ignorance. He is good like that, huh? When I was around 26, I was praying for an older woman to be placed in my life, and the Lord blessed me greatly in that area a few years later. :D Good thing, too, because I was starting to get desperate for the counsel of a Godly wife and mother at that point, I had no clue what I was doing. :-D

I know what you mean by wanting to be relevant. It's a challenge to do that, and not compromise, but I know that God will lead you. He is such a good guide, and He seems to always give us an out, and a testimony, in complicated situations. Daniel is a good example to glean from in this area to me.

Anyway, I am blessed by your wisdom my little sister, and even though I'm 37 now, I am always eager to tap wisdom of other sisters, espeically the older, but even the younger ones can be Godly examples and blessings. The youth makes them lovely and beautiful outwardly, but when they have a meek and quiet spirit too...WOW! I imagine God is so very pleased. :fadein: The Lord bless you today as you have blessed me.

I'm really into horror movies like 'The Others' 'Cujo' 'Queen of the damned' 'signs' and 'Bram stokers Dracula'. I prefer my films not to have explicit nudity or cursing but the ultimate turn-off for me when it comes to deciding whether or not to watch a movie is its general moral stance,

For example: I bought 'The Devils Rejects' on DVD for £13.99 when it got some decent reviews. What I failed to do was actually read about the films storyline (duh) the main characters of the movie are sadistic rapists and killers but are glorified as the heroes of the piece.
As soon as the credits rolled, I took it out of my x box and threw it in the bin.

There are several good review sites that can help folks understand what they are getting before watching it. I use PluggedIn, the review site that is put out by Focus on the Family. They have an extensive review site and not just for movies but also for TV, dvd and videos, music and games. They will tell you everything about the movie and have adequate 'spolier warnings' so you can still enjoy the movies you want to see. But, with everything told, one can get a feel for the moral tone of the movie as well as know things such as how many times the Lord's name gets taken in vain. Another thing I like about PluggedIn, is that they have an extensive archive, so if my kids want to watch something that's on TV that was put out a couple of years ago, I can usually find it and review it before they watch.
