Mt. Kilauea Blows Her Top With 6.9 Magnitude Earthquake...biggest since 1975. Lava Flowing Down Neighborhood Streets

Well even if there is a difference between the two volcanoes somebody still got injured by it which means that obviously it's unsafe and it can happen again.
There are ALWAYS some people out there who are too stupid to go anywhere else despite the dangers coming. And that happens with all types of natural and or man made disasters. It is often a sense of familiarity with, "things have always been the same, and will never change". Those type of people stubbornly refuse to accept the reality of an impending danger sometimes to their own demise. Happens with Hurricanes a lot too. Of course those in the immediate area of the lava flows and or fissures need to pack up and go elsewhere whether they like it or not. The lava certainly won't stop for them, lol.

Should the entire island be evacuated? No, there is no need for that. The entire island chain of Hawaii ARE Volcanoes! But most of them have become extinct due to the earth's Tectonic plate there "moving" over the "hotspot" there in the area. But it is different than most Volcanoes. It is a, "shield" Volcano which are quite rare. It has formed due to being over a, "hotspot" on the earth's crust. Hawaii is NOT part of the, "Ring of fire" Volcanoes which exist at the edges of the earth's Tectonic plates. "Shield" Volcanoes like in Hawaii are the least dangerous of all Volcanoes. And yet Mt. Kilauea is the world's most active Volcano!

The most dangerous Volcanoes are "Stratovolcanoes" also known as, "Composite" Volcanoes. They are the ones that suddenly blow their top sometimes with little or no warning and have been know to devastate entire cities. Examples of Stratovolcanoes are, Krakatoa, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Vesuvius and Mt. Tambora, which gave birth to the world's most powerful eruption.

"Cindercone" Volcanoes generally blow their top once and that's it. But they are not as dangerous as Stratovolcanoes.

Here's a good quick tutorial on types of Volcanoes: The 3 Main Types Of Volcanoes

The electric plant in Hawaii has been shut down because the lava flow is feared to reach their geothermal wells.
USA Today and news video Hawaii on edge as lava reaches power plant: 'No one has faced this before'

"The lava flow entered the 800-acre property of the Puna Geothermal Venture Plant before stalling at a swale about 300 yards from the nearest underground, geothermal well. If lava breaches the well, authorities fear it could release hydrogen sulfide, a toxic and flammable gas. "

Particulate masks won't protect them from sulfur dioxide.

So why don't they do something then like try to escape instead of just standing around and waiting to die a horrible death? Or are they still so stupid that that has become the norm for them now? :rolleyes I'm sorry but I still don't think I quite understand this whole thing. :confused

As demonstrated by the rebuilding of San Francisco including building on landfill that was made up of rubble from the 1906 earthquake and which collapsed in the Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989.

It takes money to move to the mainland, and buy a home there. Its usually the poor who dwell near volcanoes. The rich can afford to stay in a safer places in Hawaii.

So you're basically telling me that if you don't have the cash and you live in Hawaii you're toast. Talk about an unlucky and unfortunate situation. :sad Those poor people need our prayers now more than ever. :pray

Volcanoes - the earth's reminder that, while you may care about and want to "save the planet"; the planet does not care about you (or any creature or plant) in the least.

Maybe we could drop Al Gore in to assuage Pele's anger..... (nuyk nyuk nyuk)
You mean like this one that's been going around on Facebook?

Yeah they have shut down all the wells except for one as a precaution last time I followed up on that.

Here's the latest updates on this story. I'm not sure what's more tragic right now actually. The fact that it's still erupting, or the fact that people are refusing to leave. :sad
Actually Kilauea has been erupting on a continual basis with lava flowing since 1983. With 60 eruptions since that time. The reason she is so active now since May 3rd is because of the 5.0-6.9? magnitude earthquake which occurred then. That upset the apple cart so to speak as far as the underground plumbing is concerned. Here is the 30 year history on how much damage Kilauea has done over the last several decades. Some people actually had to be evacuated by Helicopter once. Kilauea Volcano: Facts About the 30-Year Eruption
