many of you older posters know that i am vet of afghanistan, and i was stationed in assadabad in konar province alonger the pakistani border.

when i have time tommorow i post pics and the story behind that one.

enjoy, and i will being on a trip to the best of times and worst of times for me.

merhullah shrizhad. i have alot of good to say about him. he was the most considerate muslim of all, save one.

he is a civil engineer that was asigned to us as a liason to the reconstruction projects and was often used a both engineer and tajimon( interpreter) he is married and has two kids if i recall correctly. he survived the taliban invasion of jalalabad. he also is from the city and province.

he taught me that muslims arent so hard( one a few) and that they are alike us. he asked a lot about america and would complain about bush when he talked about invaded iran or any hostile action. he understan why we were in afhganistan though he wanted us to leave. he introduce me to the green tea that the locals drank and he also got me hooked on the local food that was safe to eat.

i have much more to say on him. alot.

since we have discussed women's rights in saudi arabia. i will talk about the limited rights they had in aghanistan and how they (girls) were viewed there

first off, the local men seem to think that the girls were of less value then a boy.
they did allow girls to recieve an education, this was something they did before the taliban.
women did vote when i was there

if one killed a girl by accident or murder one could pay the family for the loss. but with a boy thats a lot harder and not all families did this

the woman over there often wore burquas(full) but when on the farm they were allowed to show their face.

more to follow as i recall this stuff.

i am well aware that not all of islam does this a turkey doesnt and some parts of iraq, pakisitan and afghanistan are more western with women.

speaking of women, men are men. and all the locals love our hooters calendars and also like the porn that they get a hold off.

i dont care where you are from, you will find things in common, and no i didnt supply them with porn, though they gladly shared with they had.

my favorite saying by hydiat zianullah, (aka zia) was this" pimp is good!"

being called a pimp in pashto(gua khargoos) to those you didnt know could get you shot!

mojahid are you saying that seriously. lol it was once said and i still hear this as i'm still in the guard. some thought i would convert to islam. since i hung around the interterpreters and ate with them. and treated them as humans.

i dont doubt the sincerity of the locals. but since you have responded to this

i will post some things that i saw that seem to be odd.

why are 5 yr olds engaged(girls). i do know that in some cultures marriages are prearranged but i was told something else by another former muslim who is from pakistan.

what is up with the men that would just start dancing with each other, hold hands for some lenght(this took a while for me to get used to)? and rob each others hair?

and use hannah on their toes and nails.
the typical female roles in jobs is reversed over there.
men plan weddings( i was invited but the command wouldnt let me)
men are seamtress over there, i told them that was women's job that was an insult to them

what else.
more will come back.

that pepsi and all of those soft drinks tasted much stronger then back in the states. they are from the country of dubai. thanks john i did figure it out.

caroline, we had chicken and rice and the flatbread and the tomatoes and onions.

i used to know those words for that stuff in pashto.

i know it was a culture difference. but i just wanted your opinion

i find it hard to believe that the girls were treated better under the taliban. as women were more literate before the rise of the taliban.

this site counter's what you say and supports some of what i notices. underaged marriages. and also the forced marriages.

http://learnsomethingnewtoday.us/2008/0 ... -of-women/

i also asked mehrullah and others , how does on find a date with the local women? i worded this way, is their a room where the girls take the burquas off? they said no. then i asked , what if you see the body shape throught he burquas and ask them or go to their house? or something to the like

they said that would get you killed. all marriages are prearranged. mehrullah's is and so is his brothers.

i never said that muslim weren't human, and yes its true that mary most likely young when she bore jesus. that is true.

but adulthood in afghanistan is after 18, they marry after that age. so i am told but of course that can be violated.

trust me those guys in that pic, still call me a friend. and so i am.

The girls keep covered just in case a brother or father or Uncle stroll in.

I wonder what would happen if a girls male relative strolled in and approached her to dance with her! That would be awkward :lol
