My Gun is much bigger than yours! (military pics)

John (and moderators):

Please note that I will take my side of this matter to the admins / mods in the event that they choose to let you guys carry on this "gun talk" without challenge.

Hey John, please remember that I don't mod this forum, so I will go the direction of the Mod of this forum as well as the Administrators of this site. I'm just a fellow poster in this thread.

That being said, I understand your fascination with big guns. It's got to be a rush to be around such power and force as you feel the sound waves move through your entire body and the ground shakes. Like the bom of the 4th of July, I'm sure it's awesome.

However, never forget what these "toys" are created to do. They are created to kill and destroy, human life if necessary and for somebody on the other side of the "boom", I get a feeling they don't share your fascination. In contrast, I'm sure there are many who run for cover and cower in fear when they hear the same sound that brings so much excitement to you.

I understand the 'need' for these weapons... but it needs to be held in tension with the destruction they have the potential to inflict both physically, and mentally. If you enjoy the rush of the "boom"then enjoy the rush, all I ask is that you keep it in perspective for the rest of us because frankly, though necessary, toys of war turn my stomach.

:twocents

Grace and peace.

As do I - at least that is my present position. I am not saying that we do not need these things. And I am not saying that it is wrong for people to be trained to use them. And, as people who know me will know, I have tremendous respect for those who put themselves forward as soldiers, as long, of course, if their motivation is to protect.

As I have already stated in another thread, I actually work in the defence industry, designing defence systems, so I have no substantial objection to the concept of a defensive military.

However, the use of deadly force is not a glorious thing, it is, at best, a dreadful necessity that thankfully will someday be a forgotten nightmare. Those people, such as yourself, who are willing to do "the tough and sad work" deserve respect and recognition. Politicians who start wars without need are another matter.

I know that it is hard to both accord respect to soldiers, which they deserve, and yet "mute" or "suppress" discussion of the technical marvels that they use. But I think that is the path we must take. We need to "cure" ourselves of the "power-rush" that the thought of these weapons engenders. And yet, it seems that we still need to have them. It is a difficult balance.

To repeat, I embrace the necessity for a defensive military. And I respect soldiers and recognize the need for them to train to use weapons. I think you guys have an even greater responsibility - to somehow do your important self-sacrificial job without glorifying the tools you use. And I have nothing but admiration for those who are willing to do so. Of course, I need to apply that same standard to myself as well.

But you don't seem to respect me. :lol

Well, let's be fair, you have called me quite a number of names..... :)

I may not share your ideas about gun control, or even how we "talk" about weapons. But, assuming that you are not in the army "to kick some ***", but rather to protect people if use of force is the only way, then, yes, I do respect that very significant life-decision you have made.

I am normally a very calm, cheerful person, i just have short fuses on certain issues. :)

How about we stop it right here...what say you...truce?

Indeed. A truce it is.
