Near-Success Syndrone

near success can bring one to distress that causes stress in their live that can lead to health issues. Like I said in the other post, it is better to give it your all and know you tried your best then to just give up as feeling like a failure.

Maybe.

However, I see it as a waste of time, energy, resources - and everything when someone finally doesn't get to that 'top'.

In regard to spiritual things, I'd agree.

Wasn't it Felix who was almost persuaded to become a Christian after long discussions with Paul?

J: Or maybe Felix was speaking ironically? i.e., almost YOU are persuading ME to be a Christian!

I know of course that there is a whole theology of free will (I think the term human responsibility is more helpful, actually), Billy Graham decisions in stadiums, putting on pressure to sign the dotted line, type of evangelism. And such an approach 'needs' an interpretation of a verse like this to make out that Felix was wavering and needed just to be pushed over the line into the Kingdom, so to speak.

This reminds me of a statement made by one of our lectures 500 million years ago. He said (e.g): a person who scores a 60% and makes a B is happier than another who scores 69.90 and makes the same B.

69.9% is not equal to 70% that gives an A. So both students made a B each.

and one struggled more than the other to achieve that of 69.9% and within their struggle to achieve that they never gained anymore than the one who had 60% and was happy with that. One can be successful in anything they pursue, but it's how they deal with the obstacles that might stand in their way that may cause failure or success, unless they were born with a silver spoon in their mouth.
