In some Christian internet forum I used to be part of before I came here there was a guy who had big health problems, much like the ones your neighbour has. One day he posted a good-bye thread saying that the doctors were giving him only weeks to live.
He had a failing liver due to heavy drinking in the past. The only thing that would have saved him was a transplant, but he was too overweight for a transplantation surgery, let alone the months or years it may take to find a fitting transplant.
So things were bleak. For all he knew he had weeks left to live.
However, it's been years and as far as I know he's still walking the earth. Prayer from many many people from all over the world, and a radical lifestyle change saved him. He lost weight, quit drinking and smoking completely, he started feeling better and better, and almost a year after the hopeless prognosis of merely having weeks left the doctors told him that his liver readings looked almost like a healthy person. His liver was functioning again and although he was now thin enough for transplantation surgery he wouldn't even need a transplant after all. It was an amazing story. I remember when I read his posting about how his liver is functioning normal again I cried a few tears of happiness.
So what did I learn from that?
1. Doctors have no idea. They mean well (well many of them do) but they aren't God and they have no idea when a person is going to die.
2. In many cases even if we are sick we can reclaim our health if we treat our body the way God intended it to be treated. He gave us tons of resilience.
3. Prayers help. God will hear them.
I'll be prayign for your neighbour, Edward.
