On another, now quiet thread, Danny63 made a thoughtful comment about his earring that he has had for over 40 years; for Danny, it 'is a testimony to my past and the kids I minister to feel more comfortable knowing I am not a "stuffed shirt", and they see that I had been there done that.'

So do people feel that for some people (not everyone, certainly) an earring for a man can be a positive testimony?

Re: Poll: Earring for a man, a positive testimony

What's "stuffed shirt" ? ...... :confused

I have no idea how earring can be a positive testimony for a man. On the contrary, I thought it would mean they are gays. My male cousin who wears a earring has often been mistaken for a gay ! :o

Re: Poll: Earring for a man, a positive testimony

I have the hole in my ear; however, I don’t always wear the earring. When I have, it has made little difference either way. It’s the same with my tattoos.

Be blessed.

Culture-based

Classik:

Yes, I tend to agree, really, and maybe the phrase 'positive testimony' wasn't the most fitting for me to use.

Some ppl might argue that if young men pierce their ear(s) it's because of rebellion, but not unusually their dads might well have done it too, years ago, so they are hardly 'rebelling' against their parents, if so.

What Danny63 meant, was, I guess: it's part of the culture, really, especially among young folk. These days, it's the jeweled studs in both ears that they really seem to like. If it's definitely part of the culture and there's no strong reason why not, then I don't find it objectionable, anyway.

(Thanks, guys, for your comments so far and poll votes.)

Re: Poll: Earring for a man, a positive testimony

I remember back in the eighties when young men started piercing their ears. I believe if the earring was on one side it meant you were gay, if on the other side it meant you weren't. I don't know if that has changed or not. I do know it appears to be more acceptable nowadays.

There are parents that piece the ears of their young boys when they are very young. I wouldn't say that was a personal choice.

Ummm...back to your question.....I don't know. Factor in a person's Bible trained conscience, and prayer, then I guess it would be up to them. They are the one that answers to God for what they do. Do I think it's wrong? I don't think it matters what I think. :twocents

How about those things they are putting in their ears that stretch out the ear lobe and create huge holes. Oh my, I have seen some pretty large ones. My thought on that is if they get tired of them they will need plastic surgery on their ears, or deal with very strange looking ears.

Thirstyone:

Yes, you're right; it's far more popular and acceptable now.

It used to be that young men (especially in the military and bikers) got tattoos; it was the young women who got ear piercings.

Nowadays, large numbers of young men get ear piercings. Young women, in getting ear piercings, so often get several of them.

Nowadays it's the young women especially who get tattoos (a majority of tattoo parlor clients in North America are women, apparently. It's not remotely restricted to the military and bikers, either, although there a so many women in the military and, as for bikers, people arriving at Welcome Centers in helmets and leather pants may turn out to be pastors' and deacons' wives on a weekend outing, as they are the more traditional, 'aggressive' type of biker.)

I guess it all kind of suggests that it's hard to generalize from exterior customs about what 'type' of person they are.

(If this makes any sense?)

Blessings.

I was in high school during 1976-79 not all that far from San Franscisco which had a thriving gay community back then, and I do remember the rumor that if a guy had his right ear pierced it meant he was gay.

Left ear pierced it meant he was a sailor who had sailed around the Cape of Good Hope and surivived to tell the tale.

The only stright guy I knew back then who had a pierced ear (left) was my Uncle Max, but he was always a bit .... different...

Sailors used to do it to one ear.

Now the usual custom for young men who do it is to have both ears done. (I can actually understand a young man under 18 asking his parents for his 'ears' rather than one ear to be pierced.)

Re: Poll: Earring for a man, a positive testimony

I had my ear pierced years ago - I don't wear it any more though. I used to have a few diamond studs when I was going through my "trying to look cool" phrase.

Got married and the rest is history :)

I'm not sure an earring can be seen as a testimony, unless you have a huge 10ft cross or something hanging off your lobe, lol. An earring for me is certainly just a fashion accessory.

Lloyd:

I guess she didn't like it, then. :)

(Some wives would, though.)

Yes, I guess 'testimony' is too strong a term; I probably didn't phrase it properly. What I guess I meant was that the guy in question thought that the it wouldn't do him any harm having it, seeing as he has had it for 40s years anyway, because he was doing a lot of youth work.

Blessings.

No, she liked it when we both we're a bit younger, but I guess we both grew out of it. It was more a teenage "look" if you know what I mean? If I walked through the door sporting a diamond Kayne West earring, I might be sleeping on the sofa.. haha.

Yes, well it's an individual thing, really.

Many slightly older (and even a lot older) women have thoroughly gotten used to their husbands' earrings. (Just as many husbands have thoroughly gotten used to their wives' tattoos, I suppose.)

(Did you vote in the poll, BTW, Lloyd?)

Blessings.

Lloyd, can a 10 ft cross hang off of an earlobe? Wouldn't it have to be about half that size in order to hang? I wonder if that wouldn't still rip your ear off? I'm guessing you were exaggerating a little...ummmm...a lot here. :D

Maybe just a foot long one made out of Styrofoam would work, what do ya' say?:)

If you can get young people to listen to you because you don't fit in with the establishment, I'm all for it.

I wonder if I should try piercing my nose and eyebrow, perhaps young people would listen to me then.

Pay me no mind, Lloyd, I'm just trying to give you a bad time in regards to your exaggerated comment. :yes

Oh my....I was in a hurry to get outside and do some watering, so I wrote my thoughts down, not necessarily in the order or meaning I intended. Let me state my comments in a more explained way. On some of it I was joking, and on some of it I was serious.

Ok, this is to Lloyd.

This is a statement in keeping with the threads thought....If you can get young people to listen to you because you don't fit in with the establishment, I'm all for it.

I have worked with children and many cases were court ordered to work with me and a Therapist. Most of my experiences are with younger children, but I have worked with teens. I always joke around, and one time I told a teen I came over on the Oregon Trail. He believed me. :o :eeeekkk

This statement......I wonder if I should try piercing my nose and eyebrow, perhaps young people would listen to me then.

I was joking, but now as I think about it more, it doesn't sound so bad. :chin :)

P.S. I was having a lot of fun messing around with the colors in this post. No wonder so many people use the italic, bold, underline, color, and so on.

:waving

If I have offended anyone, I am sorry. I do joke around and sometimes, on the net, it doesn't come off so well. :)

Haha, certainly not offended :thumbsup I found your post funny..

I agree, anything that brings someone closer to Christ has gotta be a good thing. I think Paul states something a little similar in one of his books, Corinthians 9:20+

Lloyd:

Interesting; you mean if you were to work among youth, you might put in your earring(s) again?

(Faith based tattoos can also be a talking point, of course.)

Blessings.

Hi Farouk,

The earring I used to wear wasn't for faith based reasons, so there would be no need for me to wear it again. It was a fashion thing, not a faith thing.

The point I was making was, anything that leads anyone to Christ is a good thing. If by wearing an earring it saves a youth, then it's a good thing. If your tattoo brings up a conversation with a youth/young kid and leads them to Christ, it's a good thing.

Re: Poll: Earring for a man, a positive testimony

If you have to entice the audience with gimmicks then you probably have got the wrong crowd. The idea of christians conforming to the world's mold for it's attention, regardless the subject at hand, is backwards to Christian Principle. I have no interest in discussing whether it is approved or not in the bible as you can justify either with text, but intention is more appropriate. They will listen to you because they see a different breed of person. Jewelry will never earn a true audience.
