Popular Music That Teach Morals

Don't you think you should consider that the music your kids want to listen to, that their friends are listening to, may not be the same as the music you're suggesting? Perhaps your time might be better spent in showing them by example and teaching who their friends should be.

NC

Maybe I was unclear.
My kids aren't that into music, except what I listen to.
They are more into sports & video games (although I limit video games to once/week) & have to watch what they play).
We live in a predominantly LDS/Mormon community - so although media does have some influence, their friends have high standards for the most part. My challege is trying to correct brain washing from the Mormon cult, which I grew up in & we still attend, to comply with my husband.

IMO, one advantage of having a wild youth myself is that I have a better idea of how to stear my kids away from dangerous wildness. :)

I really enjoy Fleetwod Mac's aproach. especially in the song Landslide. I like how the message was centered around aging and reflection about what has gone and finding the strength to carry on and peace from living life. :)

I would love to share with my future family music from my past that has impacted me positively and would love to grow with them by finding newer music that shared the same message. Be it from a Christian perspective or any perspective. As long as the message is positive.

Katy Perry has some songs I like for this. Fall out Boy has some songs for this. Even Several country stars have some good songs. Music is just awesome. :yes

I love music too!
I love to play it (on piano), to sing, to dance or just listen to it!
But I realize how it's basically hypnotizing us - music stirs emotions when attached to thoughts make the thoughts more powerful, even physiologically). So it's important to listen to good, uplifting tunes!

I like Fleetwood Mac too... Landslide and Dreams are great!

A few more songs that I think teach values or are somehow uplifting:
This is My Now, Jordon Sparks

When You Believe, Whitney Houston & Mariah Carey

I grew up with John Denver (listening to his music lol)...not new music but IMO, just as cool & uplifting...

Perhaps Love, John Denver & Placido Domingo

Guys the lyrics T.G.I.F. Last Friday Night by Katy Perry:

"Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)"

There's a stranger in my bed,
There's a pounding in my head
Glitter all over the room
Pink flamingos in the pool
I smell like a minibar
DJ's passed out in the yard
Barbie's on the barbeque
This a hickie or a bruise

Pictures of last night
Ended up online
I'm screwed
Oh well
It's a blacked out blur
But I'm pretty sure it ruled
Damn

Last Friday night
Yeah, we danced on tabletops
And we took too many shots
Think we kissed but I forgot

Last Friday night
Yeah, we maxed our credit cards
And got kicked out of the bar
So we hit the boulevard

Last Friday night
We went streaking in the park
Skinny dipping in the dark
Then had a ménage à trois
Last Friday night
Yeah I think we broke the law
Always say we're gonna stop
Op-oh-oh

This Friday night
Do it all again
This Friday night
Do it all again

Trying to connect the dots
Don't know what to tell my boss
Think the city towed my car
Chandeliers on the floor
Ripped my favorite party dress
Warrant's out for my arrest
Think I need a ginger ale
That was such an epic fail

Pictures of last night
Ended up online
I'm screwed
Oh well
It's a blacked out blur
But I'm pretty sure it ruled

Spiritually uplifting and morally appropriate according to the will of Jesus? I am not so sure.

Right, but she doesn't actually do most of that stuff. She basically hangs out at a party (which Rebecca Black starts, not her), falls for a "cute" guy, he acts like a jerk, and she ends up with the nerdy but nice kid. It's actually pretty tame; and no her parents are not ashamed of her. They were just upset at the mess.

To be honest I don't buy into " morals " in music as most of the " artests " are told what to sing and how to dress , they are simply puppets of an industry .

But as far as a song that does touch me in the way questioned in the OP , I would have to say the song Amazing Grace . That song almost brings tears to my eyes .

2 Corinthians 11:14
Douay-Rheims Bible
And no wonder: for Satan himself transformeth himself into an angel of light.

I like Deathbed by Relient K. The song has references to smoking, drinking, and such, but it's not promoting it and shows that there are consequences for those things. Also the guy in the song is sorry for what he has done, accepts Jesus as his Savior, and at the end goes to heaven.
Of course, Relient K is a Christian band. Or, rather, a band that happens to be Christian, as not all of their songs are geared towards Christianity.
Other songs by them include When I Go Down, Bite My Tongue, Those Words are Not Enough, and Up and Up.

Superchick is a good group. They're also Christian. They have songs like Stand in the Rain, Hero (which is about trying to make a difference for the better in this world), Get Up, Princes and Frogs, and Wonder (if she'll get it).

While Owl City doesn't teach morals, the lyrics are clean and there have been Christian references in his latest works. (Apparently the guy's a Christian.)
Example, Galaxies.
"Dear God, I was terribly lost
When the galaxies crossed
And the sun went dark
But, dear God, You're the only north star
I would follow this far

Oh telescope,
Keep an eye on my only hope,
Lest I blink and get swept off the narrow road,
Hercules, you've got nothing to say to me,
'Cause you're not the blinding light that I need.
For He is the saving grace of the galaxies (galaxies, galaxies, galaxies, galaxies)
He is the saving grace of the galaxies (galaxies)
"

Also, Meteor Shower. (I love this one, one of my all time favorites <3)
"I am not my own
For I have been made new
Please don't let me go
I desperately need You
"

I am careful with my music choices. While there are individual secular songs I like (mostly the themes from Sonic games), most of the stuff I listen to is from Christian bands. And, yeah, most of the songs with morals are from the Christian bands, from what I've seen.

(Since I mentioned liking Sonic themes, I thought I should mention a few things on that:

One thing you should watch out for in Sonic theme songs are ones that mention things Christians don't agree with. Like the song All Hail Shadow, which I don't care for because the lyrics makes it sound like Shadow deserves to be worshiped. Although I must admit it's catchy and I'd like it otherwise.
The song was by Crush 40. They are a secular band, but pretty safe and clean other than what I mentioned. They do a lot of, if not most of, the songs used in Sonic games.

Sonic songs are typically clean. But one, His World, did have a bad word, which was censored by being replaced with a different word in the in-game version. But the word was present on the soundtrack CD. (I actually love this song, though, and make sure to stick to the censored version.)
Also the song My Sweet Passion, Amy's theme from Sonic Adventure, is kind of creepy, and IDK, sounds to me as if it's encouraging sensual desires. It has a different and less creepy meaning when applied to Amy, but still.)

TL;DR: Relient K, Superchick, and Owl City are excellent choices, and some of my favorites.
Be a little more cautious, if you please, when it comes to songs from Sonic games (which are also some of my favorites), even though I'd say 98% of them are clean. Being secular some of them may encourage some beliefs Christians wouldn't.

i like that song but it sounds new agey rather then theological in nature

On another thread, someone mentioned how his kids want to listen to what their friends are listening to.
And I say, "If you can't fight 'em, join 'em"! :)
I don't mean join in listening to trashy music, I mean find the "cool" music that also has good messages you want repeated over & over.

Here are some popular songs that I like, that teach good values...

Slow Songs:

To Where You Are, Josh Groban
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__kDzC4k5-A

So Small, Carrie Underwood
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChPAoacVen4

Shine, Clay Aiken

Fast Songs:

Firework, Katey Perry
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s3P9fyJEu6E

Pirate Bones, Natashia Bedinfield
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrhDoxM2uJk

Remixed: Deeper Love, Aretha Franklin
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_r7BAYLvfuM

Brighter than the Sun, Colbie Caillat (I imagine this is about the Spirit of God we feel)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IClT9CEGXDs

Please share any more songs you can think of that teach good values but that kids/teens would listen to.

Thanks for the post.

Where?

I've heard the song hundreds of times and never heard anything like that. Nothing like that when I looked up the lyrics, either.
I look up lyrics to songs frequently, to make sure it's something I can listen to and wouldn't mind recommending to others.

I don't mean to seem disrespectful or anything. If you think there's reason to avoid Owl City or any other band, I can only respect that decision, even if I don't agree. When I recommend a song to others, I try to keep in mind what they may object to in a song, even if it's something that wouldn't personally turn me away.

Yeah, if it's sung well, it's a good one.

A little off topic - but this is a Christian forum... & my guess is we're all here to try to learn & share...

Something I learned about angels from the story of the talking donkey (of all things! lol)...
According to someone aqainted with Hebrew, the angel in the story is interpreted to be angels that bring darkness to one's attention. The man was beating his donkey & the angel wanted him to realize how mean he was being.

Reconsider the idea of satan/evil...
God created everything.
Evil is something - so God created it too - because there must be opposition in all things otherwise we wouldn't know good from evil & we wouldn't learn & progress.
The kingdom of God is within us (Luke 17:21).
Everything we experience is within us - how can you experience anything in a tree, a building or anywhere except within you?
So, evil influences also are within us - it's the unhealed aspects of us that are trying to get attention so they can be healed. When we pretend God or Satan is outside of us, it may provide superficial comfort, but it also is a lie that keeps us from the true kingdom (realm/experience) of God within.

Jordin Sparks is one of the American idol winner and i love most of her songs one of that is " The Cure"

Hush little baby, don't you cry
Yeah I know she hurt you, but it ain't the end of your light
'Cause I'm right here waiting, with open arms
I know you might feel shattered, but love should never bring you harm
So consider this a moment that's defining who you are
And I can fix what's broken, and here's how I'll start

<O:p
(Refrão)
Just come with your heart, and leave the rest to me
And I promise I will be, and I'll be your cure
Show me where it hurts, and I know that I can be the medicine you need
Baby I'll be your cure, your cure

Yeah, yeah, yeah<O:p</O:p

I can see she left you with your heart wide open
But I can be your shelter when the wind starts blowing
So don't be afraid of what's in front of you
'Cause I know I'm strong enough to carry us through
So consider this a moment that's defining who you are
And I can fix what's broken, and here's how I'll start

<O:p</O:p
(Refrão)
Just come with your heart, and leave the rest to me
And I promise I will be, and I'll be your cure
Show me where it hurts, and I know that I can be the medicine you need
And I'll be your cure (I'll be the cure)
And I'll be your cure (I'll be the cure)

I'll be your healer, in my shining armor
Just let me protect you, that's what I'm here for
My love is a healer, if you let me near you
Reach out and touch me, just let me restore
<O:p</O:p
(Refrão)
Just come with your heart, and leave the rest to me
And I promise I will be, and I'll be the cure
Show me where it hurts, and I know that I can be the medicine you need
And I'll be your cure

<O:p</O:p

Just come with your heart, and leave the rest to me
And I promise I will be, and I'll be your cure

Baby, I'll be your cure (I'll be the cure)
I'll be your cure, yeah, yeah (I'll be the cure)

My love is strong enough (I'll be the cure)
Whenever you call, yeah (I'll be the cure)
I am the cure.<O:p</O:p

I love I'll Be There For You, by the The Rembrandts (Although the version I listen to is by the Chipmunks.)
(This song was the themesong to a show called Friends I know next to nothing about, so I'm not advocating the show or anything here.)

"So no one told you life was gonna be this way
Your job's a joke, you're broke, your love life's D O A
It's like you're always stuck in second gear
When it hasn't been your day, your week
Your month or even your year but

I'll be there for you
(When the rain starts to pour)
I'll be there for you
(Like I've been there before)
I'll be there for you
('Cause you're there for me too)

You're still in bed at ten and work began at eight
You've burned your breakfast so far things are going great
Your mother warned you there'd be days like these
But she didn't tell you when the world
Has brought you down to your knees that

I'll be there for you
(When the rain starts to pour)
I'll be there for you
(Like I've been there before)
I'll be there for you
('Cause you're there for me too)

No one could ever know me, no one could ever see me
Since you're the only one who knows what it's like to be me
Someone to face the day with, make it through all the rest with
Someone I'll always laugh with
Even at my worst, I'm best with you, yeah

It's like you're always stuck in second gear
When it hasn't been your day, your week
Your month, or even your year

I'll be there for you
(When the rain starts to pour)
I'll be there for you
(Like I've been there before)
I'll be there for you
('Cause you're there for me too)

I'll be there for you
(When the rain starts to pour)
I'll be there for you
(Like I've been there before)
I'll be there for you
('Cause you're there for me too)
"

As Christians, we must use discernment and filter everything through the Word of God. Rationalizing is not preferable. :shame

What is this obsession with defending Katy Perry? She's part of the problem with some of today's pop music and the pop music scene. Her music and lyrics are sophomoric at best and the way she dresses and acts on stage is not very "moral", to say the least.

I'll say it, it's provocative! :shocked!

She's a poor role model for anyone who is attempting to bring up their children in a Godly manner.

Colbie Caillat is a positive influence; a talented singer/songwriter who writes acoustic guitar-based music from the heart. She is a refreshing alternative to today's mostly lacklustre music. For those who don't know, her father, Ken Caillat, was the co-producer of some of Fleetwood Mac's biggest albums, including "Rumors."

But the song mentioned on the OP, while being a very good tune, is not about the Lord. No one writing about the Lord uses the word "damn' in the lyrics.

Greatest Love of All - Whitney Houston? Hardly!

Everybody searching for a hero
People need someone to look up to
I never found anyone who fulfill my needs
A lonely place to be
So I learned to depend on me...

(really? What about God!)

... Because the greatest love of all
Is happening to me
I found the greatest love of all
Inside of me
The greatest love of all
Is easy to achieve
Learning to love yourself
It is the greatest love of all

... and all this time I thought the greatest love of all was the love of our Lord.

Paul clearly tells us we should NOT esteem ourselves over others.
