Privitization of Space Flights

Although it's working as part of a billion $ contract with NASA... SpaceX is a private company....

I think it's cool... I've long thought that, while the government should provide regulatory oversight, space exploration itself should be handed over to private enterprise....

Hopefully this will dawn a new era in space exploration, exploring strange new worlds, seeking out new life, new civilizations...boldly going where no man has gon... (sorry, couldn't resist with Scotty going along for the ride!).

the military also does its "own" space exploration. its side of the cape is way bigger and just as active as nasa.

Would you live on the moon? It would be like the wild west, but without the 3 note harmonica songs.

To me, going to the moon is a lot like going to New York City... exciting sort of place to visit, but live there... never!!!!

It would be lethal... cancer rates would skyrocket due to the lack of a magnetic field to deflect cosmic radiation, and the extremely low gravity would cause massive loss of bone density and muscle mass. Your body would shrivel up within a few years :sad

What did I tell ya... just like New York City! :yes

Seriously, I do think that, given enough time, humans would figure out how to live on the moon.... Not that I think we have that kind of time, but still.

I'm reminded of the story of the tower of Babel and the reason why God said He would confuse the language of men:

The Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they all have the same language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them."

Language barriers have, by and large, been overcome... really, there is nothing that is wholly impossible for us, except to actually create life, something out of nothing... cloning is about as close as we get. It might take us time... more time than we probably have, but nonetheless...

At the house in town, the next-door-neighbor goes to our church as well... She's 97 years old. It's amazing to talk with her and what she has seen go from "impossible" to common place just in her life time.

2012: The Year Virgin Galactic Makes Private Space Travel A Reality

January 4, 2012

Private companies have made a significant amount of progress in engineering spacecraft for leisure travel, prompting a growing number of everyday people to pursue their dreams of spaceflight.

The retirement of NASA's Space Shuttle program this past summer prompted a wave of competition among private businesses across the U.S. and the world, as they compete to develop spacecraft capable of not only carrying astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS), but also bringing tourists on trips to space. In the past – not even a decade ago – such travel was limited to the very wealthy, but companies such as Virgin Galactic are making what was once a dream into a startling reality.

The first flights of spacecraft that will take private citizens into space are set to take off this year. Surprisingly, booking such a trip is less complicated than one would anticipate, The New York Times reports. Those intrigued by the vastness of space can sign up on the internet through many company's websites. They will, however, have to fork over a substantial down payment, one that is significantly higher than the fees one would expect a commercial airline to charge for a first-class ticket.

Virgin Galactic, part of British billionaire Richard Branson's Virgin empire, will offer tourists and science enthusiasts the chance to travel just beyond the space barrier this year. The company engineered and developed a rocket ship specifically for the purpose, and it is charging less for tickets than the tens of millions of dollars a lucky few have paid to travel aboard one of Russia's rockets to the ISS.

While still exciting, a trip aboard a Virgin Galactic spacecraft offers a different experience from a NASA's Space Shuttle or a Russian Soyuz. Virgin Galactic will take passengers on a 150-minute journey through space. Passengers will experience weightlessness for approximately five minutes, according to the company. How much will such an experience run the average traveler? A mere $200,000 – with a $20,000 down payment, of course.

Aside from enabling private citizens to travel into space, Branson asserted that engineers would use Virgin Galactic to aid in their research, Fast Company reports. In an interview, the mogul affirmed that the company's spacecraft were built to exacting specifications, and that they were able to mitigate much of the deleterious environmental effects of NASA's Space Shuttle program.

"First of all, our space company, because our technology is brand new and not 40 years old as NASA's was, we will be able to put someone into space for less than the environmental price of an economy class ticket from London to New York and back," he said. "On top of that, we can put satellites into space for almost no carbon output because we’re launching them from 60,000 feet rather than land-based satellite launches. So we definitely will bring the carbon footprint of space travel down quite dramatically."

Thus far, 475 people have reserved a place on a Virgin Galactic flight. A majority have already paid the full ticket price, and are simply waiting for final safety and regulatory approval, according to the Times. While Virgin Galactic spacecraft will not orbit the Earth, they will soar 62 miles above its surface. First, however, they will complete a three-day training course at the company's training facility in New Mexico.

They will subsequently load onto a rocket ship attached to a carrier plane that will fly 50,000 feet into the air. At that point, the rocket will detach and soar more than 300,000 feet into the air. When weightlessness is achieved, passengers will be able to unbuckle and experience zero gravity.

I think there's more to your post than you might have intended. I started a thread a long time ago that asked under what authority a country could lay claim to the moon. As I recall, I had attached an article about a country that had plans to plant a station there and pronounce the entire orb to be its sovereign territory. IMO, it goes against my view of God's celestial creation for a nation to look to parts of the universe and speculate that it will be theirs. On the other hand, is it very much different from the times centuries ago when they discovered uncharted continents and laid claim to them? As far as I know, there's no internationally agreed upon law that would have the authority to deny this maneuver.

So, as it applies to this thread, what about an entrepreneur who finances a mission with the same ambition? Back in the wild west or the great frontier, before nations established borders, a family could put up stakes and claim the land as its own. There are individuals today with more available financial resources than wealthy nations to make this a realistic option. On what authority may any nation or community of nations deny this?

Talk about your wild west! Of course, we know it will always be the Lord's "property". But, this is wild for me to consider!

Yeah but... Military is still government... I'd like to see real privatization...
well its like this. you all buy and use the gps but who really controls that? the data you see is all allowed by the military. with those we can guide a rocket, cruise missile to that kitty on your farm.:lol

However, i dont mind private exploration. but why does the shows gundam wing and exosquad come to mind?

Aww... poor kitty... That is unless the kitty in question is Booboo... Booboo is pretty tough... I'd back Booboo against a cruise missile any day... ;)

You know, I don't think the world would allow for any one nation to start colonizing the moon without serious oversight by other nations... who knows, perhaps moon colonization will help solidify the "one world government" that seems to be in place during the final days....

hmm do i detect a tad bit of schofield in this lutheran?

lol... My mom had a scofield bible...

Nope, not Schofield... but I pretty basic when it comes to eschatology... I do believe that prior to Jesus' return things on this earth will be fairly unified insofar as governments are concer......

Jason... don't derail the thread. We need a new smilie guy just for Jason... something that merges this: :topictotopic with this: :chair

:lol

But, as space exploration becomes more and more common, which it will if it's privatized, don't you think it will have the effect of unifying governments? I mean, 50 years ago, who would have thought that America and Russia would be so co-operative in space....

no, just in international treaties and so forth. we have international laws that govern the oceans and maritime laws as well. so with space its likely that will be the case. russia isnt going to leave communism nor has it ever. just it went into some waning. i neither trust russia or china.
