Question on the Holy Spirit

JaneH

Hello, we're going to discuss the Holy Spirit tomorrow in our home group. I have a couple questions that one of our newer members has asked: Matthew 1:18 - I have checked my NIV, ESV, and NLT and it's similar in all, but the study notes do not mention this bit. Where it says "Mary...became pregnant by the Holy Spirit". I've read this verse many times but only when someone questioned it, did I REALLY read it. So, was Jesus actually conceived by the Holy Spirit? Was the Holy Spirit mentioned only because he is part of the Trinity? In other words, why the Holy Spirit?

Also, another question that came up (later of course) if Jesus was actually God, who did He pray to?

Thanks for any references or opinions.

Jesus stated the HS "only" speaks what He hears not on His own.

The Son of Man spoke things on His own. The message He gave wasn't His own but not everything He spoke about was that message. My Lord answers prayers. I don't pray to the HS.
I never said we are to pray to the Holy Spirit. What Jesus taught was given Him to speak the words God gave Him to speak. Like I said it is all God's word within what He wants us to learn.

I pray to the Holy Spirit directly sometimes. Mostly right befor e and during reading the Word. Nothing wrong with that.

I pray to the Father (in Jesus Name) sometimes, and I pray to Jesus directly sometimes. It depends on what the situation is and how I am wanting to approach my God.

I wont say that I have prayed to Angels, but I have talked and spoken to my Angels. I probably have at least one or two Guardian Angels and a Scribe Angel too and, I have spoken to them before. Not as God, not as anything weird. Just, like Brother to Brother talk.

The Lord showed me that, He does like being approached in different ways. He isn't The Father God Judge of All all the time. He's Abba sometimes too. Sometimes He is Jehova Rapheal, so He should be approached differently at times.

Jesus also says this about Himself.

19 Then Jesus answered and said to them, Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner."
John 5:19 NKJV

48 "He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him—the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day.
49 For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak."

John 12:48-49 NKJV

9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works."

John 14:9-10 NKJV

6 “I have manifested Your name to the men whom You have given Me out of the world. They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word.
7 Now they have known that all things which You have given Me are from You. 8 For I have given to them the words which You have given Me;"

John 17:6-7 NKJV

Not quite the same as speaks "only" what He hears. Jesus also stated it was the "Father" living in Him doing "His" work.

I think if you were there you could have a conversation with Jesus. He could speak "His" mind not just what He heard from another.
