R-Rated

Are Christians to watch R rated movies or movies with cussing in them or light nudity ? Now we already know that rated X-XX or XXX is out the window, but what about R rated movies. We can't get away from the cussing living in society. There are people who cuss on your job at the bus stop, people passing you by on the street, family cookouts. So are we to not watch movies with cussing ? Your thoughts please.

I believe it's up to the individual. Hearing profanity is not a sin.

That being said, we have this:

Ephesians 4
29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.

And this:

1 Corinthians 15
33 Do not be deceived: “Evil company corrupts good habits.”

A tv preacher says to avoid televised ball games, as some of the players may be demon possessed. Their poor sportsmanship might teach counter productive habits. Ditto for virtually any television show. Even if they don't swear, they still tend to do pagan things like dating in a non Christian manner. Youngsters might be affected by their pagan values. Even science shows tend to promote evolution and such.

This pretty much leaves Gospel type preaching shows, but only if they preach a holiness message. He even wants people to avoid commercially prepared audio Bibles, favoring recording them yourself in the King James. The reader in the commercial product might not have a holy voice, which may affect people somehow. I'm not sure exactly how the voice thing works though.

Just things to ponder.

Dear Brother Lewis, just some thoughts to add to the mix.

1 Co 10:23 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.
1 Co 10:26 For the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof.

Now the following is not the context of watching movies, but the total of our Christian walk can be affected by our and other’s conscience. We are a light to others; good or bad.

1Co 10:28 But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof:
1Co 10:29 Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man's conscience?

1 Co 4:3 But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged of you, or of man's judgment: yea, I judge not mine own self.
1 Co 4:4 For I know nothing by myself; yet am I not hereby justified: but he that judgeth me is the Lord.
1 Co 4:5 Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.

1 Corinthians 5:9-10
King James Version (KJV)

9 I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators:

10 Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world.

And how about PG movies ? would you let your kid watch a PG movie ?

The movie rating system is flawed. It's not based on christian morals. Many times a rated R film will have a PG13 rating simply because the editors removed a tiny piece of the film. I know of an X rated movie from the 70s that has been downgraded to an R rating.

A (G) rating doesn't automatically equate to wholesome family viewing.
.

I think we should be selective about everything we expose ourselves to..but if you really want/need to see an R rated movie, go for it, I guess.

Which TV preacher said all these things? When I hear things like this from a TV preacher I tend to wonder how much of it comes from his desire to get more people watching his particular show by making them think just about everything else will condemn them to hell.

I think there's a big difference between what we hear and see IRL and what we hear and see in movies etc. We can't always control what we hear and see IRL but we can always control what we use for entertainment imo.

Yeah, I think we all probably have an idea of what things fit in with our Christian values, what things don't fit but can be tolerated, and what things hurt us. With our entertainment, we can choose what we expose ourselves to and what we wish to avoid. If something feels like a sin for a particular person and they do it anyway, it probably is a sin for them.

"So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who does not condemn himself by what he approves. But whoever has doubts is condemned if they eat, because their eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin." Romans 14:22-23 NIV
