Reception of the Holy Spirit

What is required to receive the Holy Spirit?

Some of you believe that just belief is neccessary.

John.7
[39] Now this he said about the Spirit, which those who believed in him were to receive; for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
Acts.19
[2] And he said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" And they said, "No, we have never even heard that there is a Holy Spirit."

This passage in Acts 19 was after Christ had been glorified, yet they apparently had not received the Holy Spirit even though they believed in Christ. So it seems that while belief is necessary there is more. In context this passage and the one in Acts 10 where the Holy Spirit came to cornelius and company seem to indicate that someone from the Church has to be present.

It was easy for me. My conversion was similar to Paul's and it was like night and day. Within minutes I went from a non-believer to a believer. The light that I received that day is still with me 16 years later.

When one receives the HS, he becomes a new creation, the old has gone and the new has come. The difference inside the individual can be noticed by himself and others. It gives us a personal relationship with Christ so that we know without a doubt that he exists instead of simply taking other people's word for it. That's why OSAs, because once we meet someone, we can never then deny he exists. Also, Jesus says that he will never abandon us because the HS can't jump back outside of us. The HS is the living God inside all believers. It enables us to know that every word in the bible is the truth and comes from the living God. So when one reads the bible, instead of changing the words in the bible to fit our interpretation, we change our interpretation to fit the bible.

The HS is the Spirit of truth inside all believers which replaces sin with discernment, peace, love, joy, hope, patience and self-control. It is the only thing that gets us to heaven because "Flesh and blood cannot enter the kingdom of heaven." If one hasn't received the Holy Spirit, or doubts whether or not he as, all he has to do is behonest about his sins, feel remorse for them, and keep asking God to come into his heart, then wait. Jesus promises that "He who seeks will find." :)

What I find interesting is that there are believers who were baptized by John the Baptist and hadn't received the HS but were believers none the less.

Were these saved....? I tend to think so.

Did they need to be reBaptized to be saved?......I don't think so.

Why were they reBaptized?......I think to recieve the mental and physical gifts of God's Holy Spirit.

Some interesting questions to ponder:

Who Baptized Jesus?
When did Jesus receive the Holy Spirit, before or after Baptism?
When were the Disciples baptized?
When did they receive the Holy Spirit?
When did the belieers who were baptized by J the B recieve the HS?
How many baptisms are there?
Is it possible to be baptized more than once?

All people who repented before Jesus died, resurrected, and sent the Holy Spirit to us, will be saved. That's why when Jesus died, the graves of the righteous opened up. And that is why some people believe that Jesus rpeached in hell.

But you have good questions on baptism. The disciples were baptized with water and they themselves baptized others. But where the bible is silent is whether or not they were re-baptized after receiving the Holy Spirit. This can be applicable to people today who were baptized as infants on whether they should be baptized after being born again of the Holy Spirit.

Your missing the point of the thread. Paul did not recieve the HS on the road to damascus when he first believed It is quite clear from scripture that he recieved it later when God sent Annais to him and he was baptized.

Acts 9
17] So Anani'as departed and entered the house. And laying his hands on him he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus who appeared to you on the road by which you came, has sent me that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit."

So do you really know when you recieved the HS? You should.

In the verses posted above in Acts 19 Paul associates baptism and laying on of hands with reception of the HS for the disciples in Acts 19.

Paul did exactly what Jesus told him to do when he first encountered Jesus on the road to Damascus, whereas before, he would have thought it a fantasy. His conversion was all the more re-enforced and completed with Ananais. One can never ignore the Holy Spirit because it is much more powerful than the devil, Thessalonian. Paul then went away by himself for years to start learning the things of the Spirit. And that's what being "born again" means. We become infants in Christ and discern the world with new eyes, learning, and growing in the Spirit forever. :)

There does appear to be a formula, or set of criteria associated with each post pentecostal baptism and the supernatural experience of the HS.

Thess...does the group of believers you associate with practice the "laying on of hands", or "annointings"?

The Holy Spirit comes from God, not man. The only way one establishes a connection between himself and God is a personal relationship between himself and Christ. The laying on of hands is simply a demonstration to the individual of the Spirit's power, but it is up to the individual himself to surrender to God and acknowledge that Jesus is Lord with all his heart, soul, and mind. That comes from the indwelling Holy Spirit because only the indwelling Holy Spirit can cleanse each of our hearts. :)

Which work of the Holy Spirit?

I know what you were asking, but perhaps we need to clarify it a bit more.
There is the indwelling HS that comes with regeneration, but there is a second work of the HS that comes with the baptism with the HS. It is this second work that is being discussed. In this second work, the HS comes upon, not in.

We see this clearly in Acts 19. No, these "believers were not born again, for they had not heard the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Paul just thought they were born again. However, as soon as he found out the truth, he preached Christ to them, and then they were born again, and then water baptized. Finally, after they truly had been regenerated and water baptized, Paul laid hands on them, and they received the baptism with the Holy Spirit.

John used water as his "medium" to baptize, while Jesus uses the Holy Spirit!

I came from a church that taught nothing about the baptism with the HS, and worse yet, that tongues were "of the devil." So I had a lot to overcome. I started dating someone that attended an AOG church, so I went with her. It did not take me long to see that they had something that I did not have, so I got hungry for it. I think it was maybe two months before I received and spoke in tongues.

You've once again nicely avoided the question in both of your posts while thinking your telling me things I don't know. Of course the HS comes from God but I know of noone in the scriptures who just showed up at the door of the Church with the Holy Spirit already indwelt in them. Noone in scripture becomes filled with the Holy Spirit without the prescence of the Church. It is clear that belief is not the only requirement for someone having the HS.

"We become infants in Christ and discern the world with new eyes, learning, and growing in the Spirit forever"

Amen.

So when you received the Holy Spirit, were you with people or alone? God draws us in a myriad of ways, i.e., the laying on of hands, hearing the gospel, etc. But once we receive the Holy Spirit, it is only then that we become new creations in Christ because the Spirit transforms us, not we ourselves. :)

Both. Dichotomous thinking limits one to the depth of the mystery of God.

So when were you born again, Thessalonian and how did you know it? :-?

I was with a group of people, and several were praying around me. I don't think anyone laid hands on me though.

Thess.....Gotta make a point here in regard to your statement. The OT has many passages suggesting that the Spirit of God came upon, or filled people with it. In many instances, like in Samson's case, the Spirit rests on(or in) an individual, and leaves an individual according to God's will.

No baptism involved in these cases of OT Holy Spirit events. And, the OT Holy Spirit is the same as the NT Holy Spirit.

And, Baptism isn't a NT concept, it's was a Jewish practice long before it was a Christian practice...but that's another matter.

Valid point and one I am aware of. But in the Church age, i.e. nt post pentecost I do not know of anyone who was filled with the HS that was not in the prescence of the Church. For the most part the OT cases you speak of are special cases in which kings and prophets are filled with the HS.

Baptism did exist before Pentecost but Acts 19 makes it clear that it did not confer the Holy Spirit.

Heidi, can you show me a passage in the NT where someone recieved the HS when they were alone? Yes God draws us to himself in a myriad of ways, but I don't see anywhere in the NT that someone is filled with the HS when they are alone. By the way your above question is a typical tactic of avoidance. Show me in the NT where someone alone recieves the HS, i.e. becomes born again.

Thess....here are some questions to ponder....

You must agree that Jesus was Baptized before the Pentecost of Acts 2, yes?

Jesus did receive the HS upon his baptism....the HS in the form of a dove, rested upon him, yes?

The disciples baptized with water "post jesus, but pre pentecost", yes?

Jhn 3:22 After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.

Jhn 4:1 When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John,

Jhn 4:2 (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)

Did the HS land on the recipients of the disciple baptism?

What is the difference between the Pre and Post Pentecost Baptism performed by Jesus' own disciples?

One would think surely the HS would fall on them (Pre Pentecost), as it did Jesus. I mean his own disciples (with himself present), baptized.

Just throwing things out there for pondering...... :)

="Thessalonian"]What is required to receive the Holy Spirit?

Some of you believe that just belief is neccessary.

Read John 14 about the comforter, but there are conditions as in vs 15,21.

Baptism there are two baptisms.

The first done by man in water baptism.
The second by the HOLY SPIRIT.

Mat 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

Mar 1:8 I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.

Luk 3:16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:

When does the HOLY SPIRIT baptize with Fire of truth? Acts 2 was an example.

Jer 5:14 Wherefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them.

Luk 21:12 But before all these, they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name's sake.

Luk 21:13 And it shall turn to you for a testimony.

Luk 21:14 Settle it therefore in your hearts, not to meditate before what ye shall answer:

Luk 21:15 For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist.

Luk 21:16 And ye shall be betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends; and some of you shall they cause to be put to death
.
death one of Satan's names Heb 2:14

Luk 21:17 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake.

Luk 21:18 But there shall not an hair of your head perish.

Luk 21:19 In your patience possess ye your souls.
